The only reason I paid attention to the Final.  I dislike both teams, but hoped to see one of my favourites, Tomas Kaberle, get the cup.

I got goosebumps when it was passed to him.  I thought that it was classy, that, although he was just a "rental player" he was still 3rd or 4th to get the cup.

Congrats Tomas.  Good luck in Carolina.

I thought it was classy too, I was thinking he might be down near the end because of his reduced role.

It seems the players really respect those who have put in their time in the league, or perhaps he was really good in the room and his role was bigger than his ice time would indicate.

Typically teams hand the cup off from oldest to youngest.

Brophy thinks much the same thing
"Liles has produced as advertised, scoring three goals and 12 points while giving the Leafs 22 minutes of mostly solid play per game. At the end of the day, he's been a big upgrade from Tomas Kaberle -- faster, more skilled offensively and more interested in playing the game"

Kypreos on Hockeycentral just now saying folks in Carolina believe Kaberle is overweight and out of shape. Unless there is some medical reason for this, I'd say he just isn't into playing hockey at the level we were used to seeing him play at.

I assume he just didn't train as hard in the summer after winning the Cup.  Reached the pinnacle and all that, it's human nature I suppose.

Defenseman Tomas Kaberle, who signed to a three-year, $12.75 million contract by GM Jim Rutherford during the summer, has just 5 assists, a minus-10 rating and was a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Ottawa Senators.

Eric Staal -17, Pitkanen -11, LaRose -11 - more going on here than Kaberle's problems

That's possible and at the very least, likely to be a potential factor. I felt his skating had declined some before he left Toronto. But it's not like his body got pounded or he's had a lot of serious injuries. My guess continues to be that something else is going on. A change seemed to happen mid season and it was later revealed a family issue was going on.

Jim Rutherford flat out admitted that Kaberle did not come to training camp in shape, and attributed it to winning the Stanley Cup and not preparing himself during the summer:

I've listened to and respected Rutherford for years. He's a serious GM who doesn't tend to joke around but he's also got a heart and seems to treat his people well. He's got class in my opinion. He's also one of the better GMs.

I can't recall him ever airing stuff like that about any of his players. Maybe he has but it cannot have been often. Jim must feel Tomas really wronged them for him to say what he did.

Burke traded him at the right time.  No way Carolina gets anything close to the deal we did.  On second thought, the right time to trade him was to philly for carter and a 1st.

30 Thoughts (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opinion/2011/12/travel-key-to-realignment-30-thoughts.html)
9. Unlike Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray, who announced that he's not trading Bobby Ryan as he sees how a coaching change affects his group, Rutherford plans to make moves. Top candidates: Tuomo Ruutu (UFA-to-be, making $4.4 million in cash this season) and Tomas Kaberle (tough contract, two more years at $8.75 million -- cash total).

10. One agent and a couple of GMs made an interesting comment about in-season trading. They pointed out that, sometimes, the toughest thing about making deals is not what's owed on a contract in future seasons, it's what owed this season. ("If you want, you can dump a contract in the summer," one GM said). So many teams are at their budgets -- or over -- because of injuries. Carolina might have to wait a little bit before it can move either player. There is interest in Ruutu. Rutherford seems confident he can trade Kaberle in a month or two as long as the defenceman starts playing better.

I'm a huge Kaberle fan and I don't by any means think he's washed up.  But there's no question he needs to shake it off and get himself going again because he's been pretty awful since we traded him.

Good to see Tomas rejuvenated under new coach Kirk Muller. In his last two games he registred 4 points (all assists, one of them on PP) and he is also +2. In those two games he scored almost as many points (0+4) as in his previous 27 games (0+5).
