Title: 2018-2019 NFL Thread
Post by: hockeyfan1 on September 06, 2018, 08:10:21 AM
What's the lowdown on the NFL this year?  Whowill win the Super Bowl?  Are the San Francisco 49ers the most improved team?  And what of Tom Brady & his New England Patriots?

All of that and more plus the latest news on what teams to watch this year, etc., etc.:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000957751/article/fiftythree-nfl-things-to-watch-on-the-road-to-super-bowl-liii (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000957751/article/fiftythree-nfl-things-to-watch-on-the-road-to-super-bowl-liii)

The season opener kicks off Thursday September 6th with the Atlanta Falcons against the Philadelphia Eagles (defending Super Bowl champions).

Perhaps the most controversial headline to date for the league even before the start of the season, was the running shoe brand Nike and it's naming of Colin Kaepernick as the face of the brand.  While as  controversial as it may have seemed judging by the reactions of Nike shoe burning by Trump supporters, and not controversial at all to those who understood both the cleverness of the marketing and the willingness to showcase a maverick figure in Kaepernick and shake the reins of people's concious in choosing him in the first place.

Not to be outdone, and expectedly,  brought forth the ire of Trump, who once called players like Kaepernick "s**s of b***ches", in reference to them taking a knee rather than standing during the playing of the US National Anthem last season in protest of racial injustice in America.

Call it what you will, call it what you may, but the Nike slogan with Kaepernick's face succinctly reads:  "Believe in something."  Even if it means sacrificng everything."  (in reference of Kaepeenick having become unemployed on account of his actions).

Who'd a thunk it?  The Buffalo Bills -led Josh Allen thumped the Minnesota Vikings 27-6, making this a nightmare outcome for bettors.  Who would have expected a one-sided result from an underdog (Buffalo) over a contender (Minnesota).  Not even close.

Buffalo fans can definitely do their happy dance.

Not since 1995 has an underdog beat a huge point spread.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the KC Chiefs continued their trailblazing ways, as Mahomes surpassed Peyton Manning's early season (first three games) TD total of 12 (2013) by1 (13 for Mahomes), in a 36-27 win over the SF 49ers.

Well, it just had to be broken at some point, and it finally was!  The Detroit Lions after 70 games -- make that four years -- had themselves a 100 yards rushing game, topping it off with a  26-10 victory over the New England Patriots.

The record, by the way, is held by the Chicago Cardinals of 1937 to 1945 -- 79 games.

But they're so much fun to watch. So many offensive weapons and one of the all time great QBs pulling the strings making it look incredibly easy.

Three consecutive 40+ point games, 9 straight wins, and now hints of being a Superbowl favourite with the bookies

Yes, I shouldn't complain.  Along with the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup, seeing the Eagles win the SuperBowl was something I thought I'd never see in my lifetime.

My mum's aunt married an American GI at the end of the 2nd world war and moved home with him to New Orleans. As my mum was growing up during the troubles in Belfast my granny encouraged her to spend her teenage and early 20s summers living with my aunt in NOLA, took me to visit when I was 10 and we went to the Superdome for a game but I only really had a passing interest.

About 6 years ago I decided to visit NOLA and took in a game (2011 so a couple of years post superbowl win) which really got me hooked and following the team properly and sport in general. Probably the best sporting atmosphere I've ever experienced in that Dome.

It's not been a particularly easy team to follow since then but last season felt like something was happening and this year feels potentialpy fantastic.

Highest scoring MNF game ever, currently 3rd most combined points in NFL history (and counting)!
That pick might seal it for the Rams, fun game to watch!

I can't believe the end to my Eagles game. I had accepted the loss when the Bears lined up for the field goal. The expertly called time-out by Pederson and the kicker makes the first one that doesn't count (quite easily by the way). I'm like "sure call a time out to make him think, this won't work". 2 posts later and I'm jumping up and down. Unreal

Where the Eagles almost did dare...losing 20-14 to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Divisional Round.  Guess this is it for Philly QB Nick Foles, the hero of last uear's championship win.

But if not for that interception, Philly fans will be forever wondering if things could have just been different...

As you say Wentz was always going to win out, but if anyone was likely to pull off a playoff miracle in the last couple of minutes you'd have backed Foles considering his post-season past. Have to say the Eagles really turned it round after the previous game in the dome. They'll be there or thereabouts again next season.

I'm due to be in Philadelphia in September, might try and catch a game if it happens they've a home game the weekend I'm there

If I were an Eagles fan, I'd have definitely hinged my bet on Foles.   Considering everything about this Eagles season,  the icing on the cake, so to speak, would have been  for Foles to pull off another surprise.  Can't blame it all on the QB.  He'll always be in the Eagles record book as a Super Bowl Champ.

A controversial non-call against the L.A. Rams changed the momentum and the game for QB Drew Bree’s & the New Orleans Saints in a 26-23 OT loss to the Rams, in the NFC Championship Game Sunday.

From everyone’s viewpoint, the helmet to helmet hit on the Saints’ receiver Lewis definitely merited the flag as a bona tide interference penalty.  Why the referee’s missed it or didn’t call it is beyond anyone’s guess.

Quote
“No team should ever be denied the opportunity to reach the title game – or simply win a game – based on the actions, or inactions, of those charged with creating a fair and equitable playing field. As is clear to all who watched the game, it is undeniable that our team and fans were unfairly deprived of that opportunity.”

Officials had declined to throw a flag in the closing stages of Sunday’s game, after Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman had clearly hit Saints wide receiver Tommylee Lewis before the ball arrived on a third-and-10 pass.

Had a penalty been called, the Saints would have been able to run the clock down before kicking a field goal as time expired, which would have won the game. Instead, they were forced to kick a field goal with 1:41 remaining. The Rams were able to tie and force overtime, where Greg Zuerlein’s 57-yard field goal sent them to the Super Bowl.

In what was the lowest-scoring game in Super Bowl history,  the New England Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl championship with a 13-3 triumph over the Los Angeles Rams Sunday.

Even though no QB of either team  threw touchdowns, it was the Patriots QB Tom Brady who masterminded the drive that led to the eventual winning TD..  With barely minutes left in the fourth quarter, leave it to Brady to somehow get the rabbit out of the hat so to speak, and his trustworthy receiver Edelman, to get the job done.  And they didn't disappoint.

The younger, faster Rams squad whom many thought would prove to be too quick and troubleaome for the slower Patriots, surely had their game plan in tatters by a New England defence that stymied L.A.'s passing & running game.  L.A. QB Goff was sacked four times.

Not to be outdone, the Rams themselves held off the Patriots offensive attack.  But no matter what, it would be up to Terrific Tom to figure it out and Brady outsmarted even the staunchiest of defences at the last minute.

The Patriots tie the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl wins by a franchise.

Patriots QB Tom Brady makes history by winning his sixth championship.

Under coach Bill Belichick, New England has won the Super Bowl six times in nine seasons.

WAY TO GO, BRADY!!
