Game Notes

TOR
•Andersen (4-1-0, 3.76 GAA, .880 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Mitch Marner and Connor Brown swapped places at practice on Monday, meaning we might see Marner play on the 4th line alongside Martin and Moore
•Rosen was back alongside Carrick as his rotation with Borgman continues
•Matthews was named the NHL's second star of the week after scoring 4 goals (2 in OT) in 3 games

WSH
•Braden Holtby (3-1-0, 2.47 GAA, .923 Sv%) will likely start for the Capitals
•Nick Backstrom was just named the NHL's third start of the week. He recorded 3 goals and 6 assists in 4 games
•Backstrom and Kuznetov lead the league in scoring so far this season with 11 points each in 6 games. Ovechkin is 2nd with 10 points and leads the league in goals with 9. T.J. Oshie is right behind them with 8 points
•The Capitals have lost a number of key players since our playoff series against them: Shattenkirk, Alzner, Schmidt, Williams, Johansson, and Winnik have all departed through trade/free agency/expansion. They'll also be missing Niskanen and potentially Eller due to injury
•Niskanen was recently played on LTIR, meaning he'll be out until at least November 7th. They lost their first game without him to Philly by a score of 8-2
Injuries

•Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
•Joffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely

•Lars Eller - Illness - Questionable Tuesday
•Matt Niskanen - Injured Reserve - Upper Body

Looking at so many of these perennial contender teams is somewhat of a cautionary tale, there are some HOLES on that Caps team.

It's a reminder that you have to be willing to move on from non-core pieces while you can still get good value in return for them. Keep the pipeline flowing and such.

Also, you have to be careful with picking up expensive rental players/avoid it. The teams that win the Cup tend not to be the ones that pick up the biggest names at the deadline (some exceptions, obviously, but in general).

Also, don't trade Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat. That may be less applicable in our situation but it's still fun to mention.

Yes indeed.  That was their Rayzor>Rask moment.

Although if we had kept Rask would we have been just a little too good to end up drafting the Marvelous Three?  Could be another butterfly-makes-hurricane type deal.

What I love about that pic is that those were the actual costumes, which even in 1966 dollars look like they might have cost $7.50 total to rustle up.

That show was all kinds of awesome on multiple, multiple levels.  I think I am going to change my nom-de-board to King Tut, the most brilliant in the series' brilliant cast of arch-villains.

Andersen goes tonight and McBackup tomorrow.

One thing to watch for with Marner is if Babs will try to feed him some extra minutes by throwing him out with Matthews and Nylander on post-PK shifts.

Yeah, much like he did with Brown, I'm sure he will find a way to get Mitch some minutes. As Babcock himself said, it isn't just on Mitch, the whole line has been suspect.

Or he confused his favourite "Star Trek:  The Next Generation" fan forum with his favourite "Toronto Maple Leafs" fan forum.  I could totally see that being the beginning of a statement like "Unless the Borg recognize that Pickard's ability to think as part of a non-collective hive was one of his strengths, there is no way they assimilate him correctly."

Until one of them makes a clear claim to the role, yeah. Bergman's been better so far, but I wouldn't say he's played well enough to force his way into the lineup on a nightly basis.

To be fair they're running up on 10 or so years since Ovie-Backstrom got together. That's a pretty fair run for any contending team.

Yeah they've had a good run but they'll need to be careful and possibly think about trying to move on the likes of Oshie and his 8 year contract or else be stuck as too good to get top end first-round draft talent to rebuild with

Which brings up an always interesting question. Everybody wants to be the Blackhawks, but if that wasn't an option would you rather be the Carolina Hurricanes (win a Cup and then fade into obscurity for 9 years) or the Capitals (no Cup but consistently an elite team for 10 years).

I always liked someone in the lineup with a little bit of toughness just to keep the other team honest but in today's game so much of that is gone really don't think there's a need anymore. I would rather roll another line with some responsible, decent defensively with some more scoring. Kapanen and or Leivo up in his place.

It honestly doesn't matter where the puck is - behind him, in his skates, seemingly out of reach - Nylander just seems to always find a way to get control of the puck.

I mean, I guess . . . though, the only way this was a 'tight one' was on the scoreboard. The play on the ice was pretty loose.

Well, yes but overall I thought the defense was pretty disciplined.  For ex, Ovie wasn't allowed to run amok, as Job One.

Yup. The Marleau-Kadri-Komarov-Gardiner-Zaitsev unit did a great job against him.

Not sure I've seen this before, Zaitsev and Hainsey were the only two defencemen to play on the PK tonight. They both had 4:57 of ice-time shorthanded. The 4 regular forward PKers all split their time evenly. Babcock really doesn't like using any of the other D there. Hainsey is averaging over 6 minutes on the PK a night and Zaitsev 5 and a half. Rielly's the next highest at just a shade under 2 while Borgman is at 1:35. Gardiner has seen spot duty only usually when one of those D takes a penalty and Carrick and Rosen haven't gotten a sniff of it. So when Borgman sits Babs really only has 3 defencemen he likes using there.

I mean it's been working well enough so far but that's really not something we can do all season long.

He broke up the goal of the year with his skate, Nylander-Matthews give and go. I REALLY REALLY REALLY would like them to try someone else on that line.

Have to agree.  Excellent analysis by Mirtle in comparing the different roster changes to both the Capitals and the Leafs, and why, if last the Leafs & Capitals shall meet again, results may be a more positive one for Toronto.

With the current and much-improved roster, the potential for victory would come off as more plausible.  Mirtle breaks down the details (comparing numbers between players then such as Matt Hunwick to current such as Hainsey, for example) and gives compelling reasons why this Leafs roster would accomplish things differently.

Considering the add-ons the Leafs made -- Marleau, Hainsey, Moore, Fehr, as well as Borgman & Rosen, and the deletions the Caps' were forced to make due to salary cap issues -- Shattenkirk, Alzner, Johannsen's, Winnik, Justin Williams, Schmidt -- it goes to show that even with minimal but crucial tweaking here & there, the Leafs now possess more depth, skill, & experience to emerge the victors in such a series, were it to happen again, hypothetically-speaking.

The fact that the Leafs shut out Washington in this game very efficiently certainly lends credence to Mirtle's assertions.

Wow 2nd game in a row where Marner feeds JVR for an almost-empty net tap in and no dice.
You would think he would know by now that Marner and can pass through anything. Keep your stick on the ice and expect the pass at any time. The team will continue to get better the more they play together.

I'd be curious to know how many controlled zone entries Nylander had last night vs the rest of the players on the ice.  It seems he rushes the puck into the zone under control every single time down the ice.
