From Dave Hodge on Twitter:
Certain members of the Spezza family expect Jason to be a Leaf. I don't believe it--they do.

I know, just an off-hand tweet, but...
I really don't care for Spezza and I shudder to think what we would need to offer up for him.

Dislike. Not you 4th Liner...
Is something missing from your post?
-
Yeah, I don't see the Leafs and Sens making a trade of that magnitude.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Yeah, somehow Dave Hodge's twitter got removed from the beginning of my post - I fixed it.

Certain media people think that tweeting sensationalistic nonsense rumours involving the Leafs is a good way to pick up followers. I don't believe it - Dave Hodge does.

Fair enough. I still have a time thinking of giggles in blue and white, it's unnerving. I just can't stand him.
-
Dave Hodge just got a twitter account yesterday and he's already learned how to cause controversy.

It'd be almost impossible to fit him under the cap. Also: Is he really worth $7mil??

That's the ONLY reason I could see Ottawa thinking about trading him. He has four years left and is $7M cap hit. Of course the team would suck even worse without Spezza so it wouldn't make sense to deal him unless they get something good back.
-
I know we're trained not to like Spezza and all, but he's a point-per-game centre who can play in all situations, has size, and is pretty darn good on the face-offs. And I'm aware that he hasn't actually hit the point-per-game plateau in a few years, but the potential is still definitely there. He picked up 57 points in 62 games last season when the next highest Senators forward had a whooping 34 points. He's certainly not perfect (injury troubles, slightly overpaid), but he'd instantly be the best forward/player on our team.
Yeah, I don't see the Leafs and Sens making a trade of that magnitude.
Agreed. Melnyk would have to sell the team first for a trade like that to happen.

With that said, this seems like as good a time as any to re-post this:

Sure. Spezza for Kadri, Grabovski and Schenn.
-

No way I even deal Schenn for Spezza... even straight up.
-
Oh, and you also have to take Kuba as well to make room for Schenn.
-
I'm no Spezza fan, but I'd learn to like him if he played for the Leafs.
If Ottawa was interested in moving him I'd take him in a Phaneuf type deal, but if they insisted on Schenn or Kadri I'd pass.

Kadri I would consider parting with, but there's no way I would move Schenn for him.

If Bozak rebounds and Lombardi returns, I'd consider Kadri + Grabs... Possibly. I need more time to think about that.
-
The only trade for Spezza I'd accept is if we get SP in the deal too......
-
I think Grabovski has 0 value to the sens because of his contract status.
They'd have trouble re-signing him.

I'm pretty sure he has a NTC.

Speaking of the Sens, I went over to capgeek and was wondering why they have a "buyout" listed under Alfredsson in addition to his salary?

They had to buy out the option year of his old pre-cap contract when they signed him to an extension.

I think I just did that with my mini-van. Huh? ???

IIRC, it's left over from his pre-lockout deal.
He had a payout due to him if a team options year was declined, and this is the cap hit for that.

For shame Dave Hodge.
-
I can't believe that there would be a Leaf fan that wouldn't want a ppg+ 6'3" player who has atleast 7 years left as a #1 center.
I have seen him used improperly by his last coach (like as a shutdown center against Crosby in the playoffs which was absolutely idiotic when the Sens had Fisher and Kelly also as centers!!!) but he is an elite puck carrying forward with a great shot. I don't think there is a forward on the Leafs who is more valuable. The only forward I would hesitate in trading would be Kulemin but even he is replaceable.
-
What a waist of space. why would we give up top prospects for that clown. we are rebuilding not tearing down. giving up them three for him would be a massave step back.

Spezza for Kessel -straight up - in a heart beat.
-
Komi, Bozak, and Leaf's 2nd for Spezza and Ottawa's 1st.
-
Spezza for Kessel -straight up - in a heart beat.
In a heart beat? Personally, I don't think so. I think they're of fairly equal talent. Is the extra 1.6 mil. on Spezza's cap hit justified because he plays center? Maybe. I think it's fairly close to a wash and unless I have a winger in my system capable of 40+ goals per year on the cusp, I might opt to not do that deal just for the sake of doing it.
(edited fot ytpos) :D
-
I'd be harder pressed to find a RW of Kessel's caliber and attributes.
-
Spezza for Kessel -straight up - in a heart beat.
Michalek for Kessel -straight up - in a heart beat.

Even if we say that the two are fairly close offensively, I'd say Spezza is a much more complete player than Kessel. And I think that difference is worth an extra 2.5% of the salary cap. The only thing that would make me hesitate is that it would completely mess up the complexion of our team, especially with the Connolly signing. But if this offer was made to us in June and we were able to sign the right-wing equivalent of Connolly (aka Ryder), then yeah I'd make the trade pretty quickly.
-
In June? Probably. Now? Yeah, I don't know.

Blake Kessel is a Flyer, not a Leaf. :P

No way Pittsburgh makes that deal...
Edit, didn't see Busta's post, similar drift.

Spezza is probably my 3rd favorite all-time Senator behind Chara and Brad Marsh. Maybe a honorable mention to Norm Maciver and Bill Berg.

Blech....think I just threw up a little.

I went to find a Tickle Me Spezza photo and instead found a Flyers blog called Down Goes Spezza, a list of baby toys included a Tickle Me Pronger, a Well Done Wellwood Oven and a Baby's First Cooke...

As Carlton noted above, aside from being a Sen, I don't get all the hate with respect to Spezza. He's probably better than any centre we have on our team and is a bona fide centre to put on a line with Kessel (nothing against Connolly, but he's not a first line centre). I'd be more than willing to part with a package along the lines of of Gunnarson, Bozak and Macarthur (three players I actually really like) to get a deal done for Spezza. Gardiner could slide into the top 6; Lombardi, Kadri or Frattin sould slip into Macarthur's spot on Grabo's wing; Connolly would slip into Bozak's spot on the third line.

I agree... and Connolly wouldn't be wasted there either. He's going to get significant minutes on the point on the PP.
-
I'd do Kadri for Spezza straight up.

Yeah... I don't see why one wouldn't... Unless of course they've got something against really goofy laughs.
-
I'd like to get a better sense of what player the Leafs are getting with Spezza. Playing on a line with two other all-stars he looked worth his salary. Without them, he's looked good but kind of Mike Ribeiro-esque.

I don't know if it's that easy. You can probably say the same thing for Heatley or Alfredsson for that matter. Heatley was better with Spezza than without.
-
Also, did he not finish the year playing with guys like Condra/Greening and Butler?
His last 18 games of the year he had 9 goals, 16 assists for 25 points. That's mostly AHL caliber.
-

Sure, but the difference there is a little less noticeable. I mean, last season was the 1st full season that Heatley played since his rookie season where he did score at least 39 goals or have 72+ points. Alfredsson had become a point per game player before he started lining up with Spezza. Spezza's never really played an extended stretch without at least one of them since he established himself as an NHL player, so, it's hard to really judge.

But again, Dany Heatley often played with Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau while Spezza played with guys like Colin Greening and Bobby Butler. Dany Heatley's never had an extended period where he played with 3rd/4th line type guys.
We're grasping at straws here. It's similar to a lot of our expectations for Kessel to score 40+ with a true playmaking center. If Spezza had a goal scoring winger he can easily hit 50-60 assists. He's proved that. A few times.
-
I haven't liked Spezza play since he was with the Mississauga Ice Dogs. The ONLY way i would trade for him was if his playoff numbers were really good when they went on the cup run a few years ago.
-
I blame Dave Hodge for these continued Spezza rumors.
-
As Carlton noted above, aside from being a Sen, I don't get all the hate with respect to Spezza.
He's a giggling tool, he would be one on any team. He'd also be a pretty good hockey player on most any team. I'd have a hard time embracing him as a Leaf but I'd probably get over it a few years after he was traded from the Leafs, preferably to Edmonton.
-

Right and I'd feel similarly uneasy about committing the dollars/cap space to either of those guys.
-
uuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, what? Okaaay.
Is this like the Lindros thing back in the day when he started basically saying he was going to be traded to Toronto and that was his only choice?
-

I, too, remember having seen Spezza when he played for the Ice Dogs, way back then. I had gone to an Ice Dogs-Majors tilt (when the Majors were still called the Toronto St.Michaels Majors) at the Hershey Centre, and kept seeing this very fast-skating and quite talented kid keep getting breakaways thanks to his speed. I said to myself that that fellow will make the NHL no doubt. At the time, the Ice Dogs were a dreadful team, but Spezza was one player who stood out from the rest!
-
Grabbo's goal last night tells you everything you need to know why we don't need Spezza.

People are morons. We don't have the cap space to take him.
