This happened as I was writing the GDT:

Quote
Jonas Siegel ‏@jonasTSN1050  6m
Peter Holland recalled from the Marlies.

So unless there's a late injury somewhere, I'd expect it means Kulemin goes back to the wing and Holland plays 3C.

That's what good defensive hockey can do for you. The difference between a good one and a crappy one. Even with our scoring still think if it wasn't for the early play of Reimer and Bernier we wouldn't be in the playoffs.

Montreal's not a good defensive team.  They're better than the Leafs (probably every team in the league is right now) but they're still not good.  They are regularly outchanced most games, but they have elite goaltending like the Leafs, and their PK isn't bottom 2 in the league.

More amusingly, Kessel has as many points as Montreal's and Florida's top scorers combined.

Bodie-McClement-Smith

I could get behind that 4th line.  According to Paul Hendrick that's what it will be tonight, Kulemin will shift to 3rd line wing with Holland centering.

I'd like to change Smith to someone who can play a more physical style, (like, I don't know, Ashton or D'Amigo), but, otherwise, yeah. Probably the best 4th line the team has had all season. Now, let's get them a few more shifts so the rest of the forwards aren't worn out by the 3rd period.

I hope they just trade Reimer. What does he have to do to get a start. Bernier lost the last game IMO, it would only seen a given the Reimer starts this game. Given his record against the Habs.

No Price means this game should be very winnable.  Why, it's just like the Islanders being without Tavares!  :-X

Like I said, regardless of your personal feelings towards Reimer, the team has clearly identified Bernier - who has been excellent much more often than not - as the starter.

Benching him after one rusty outing following a two-week layoff would make zero sense. Zero.

He has one good game and then gets on the 2nd line.  For all the talk about Kadri not playing well earlier in the year, how is Clarkson not an entitled player who is getting ice-time completely without merit?

You have to feel for Kadri and Lupul. Clarkson is an absolute anchor. Randy's insistence on continuing to try something that just doesn't work isn't surprising, but it's really irritating.

jonasTSN1050: Lines vs. MTL: van Riemsdyk-Bozak-Kessel. Lupul-Kadri-Clarkson. Raymond-Holland-Kulemin. McLaren-McClement-Bodie.

jonasTSN1050: Defence: Gunnarsson-Phaneuf. Gardiner-Franson. Gleason-Rielly. Goaltender: Bernier.

Well, unless Siegel is wrong, there goes the dream of a face-puncher-less 4th line.

Phaneuf passed away at least three reasonable shot attempts.  At this point they just need to make a puck hit Budaj...he's liable to be asleep.

I guess when Carlyle told the Leafs to watch Team Canada they accidentally gave them the video feed from the opposition.

You know, one of these days, this team will start coming out ready at the beginning of the game on a regular basis instead of having frequent nights where they need half of the 1st period to get ready. I don't expect it to happen this season or under the current leadership and coaching staff, but, it will happen.

Because Gleason didn't get all of Gionta it almost looked a little like he held him on the boards, which he didn't. If Gleason lands a complete hit there's probably no penalty. Doesn't really make sense.

Again, I hate diving/embellishment calls on legit penalties. Nobody has any idea how an individual is going to react when he loses his balance on ice and skates. Telling JVR to just "keep skating" is easier said than done.

I agree with you in principle, but, it did look like JvR went down pretty easy on that one. Almost looked like he was set to go down before Markov's stick really even made contact.

Quote
If a goalkeeper comes out of his crease to “cut down the angle” on a shot and after making the save covers the puck, this shall be legal. If the goalkeeper races out of his crease in an attempt to beat the attacking player to the puck and instead of playing the puck jumps on the puck causing a stoppage of play, this shall be a minor penalty for delay of game.

I have, and, it really wasn't that far out. When Bernier got the puck, he was near the edge of the face-off circle. Goalies cover the puck out near that area on a regular basis. His momentum took him out further, but, where he got the puck, he was absolutely in a legit position to cover it.

63.2 Minor Penalty - A minor penalty shall be imposed on any player, including the goalkeeper, who holds, freezes or plays the puck with his stick, skates or body in such a manner as to deliberately cause a stoppage of play. With regard to a goalkeeper, this rule applies outside of his goal crease area.

Technically it is a penalty but I agree, it is rarely if ever called.

The official rule is a goalie who makes a save and then covers the puck is fair game.  But a goalie who just scrambles out of the crease and covers the puck gets a delay of game penalty.

Because of how often similar plays go uncalled. Also, because of how a marginal difference would make basically the same play legal. If Bernier lets the puck slide into him instead of putting his glove on it, there's no call there. It would still be the same play, but, one draws a rarely enforced rule and the other does not.

It's in the rulebook though, you can only be upset when they're NOT getting called.

If Bernier lets the puck slide into him instead of putting his glove on it, there's no call there. It would still be the same play, but, one draws a rarely enforced rule and the other does not.

I think that's a pretty important distinction there. Bernier never once intended to play that puck, he dove for it with the sole intention of covering it with his glove. Had Bernier just slid into it you could argue he was trying to knock it somewhere and the puck just went under him. The ref would then have to blow the whistle since he couldn't just allow a Habs player to try and pry it from under his body.

That would just mean I'm upset more often than I'm not, and that's no good for anyone.

I think that's a pretty important distinction there. Bernier never once intended to play that puck, he dove for it with the sole intention of covering it with his glove. The ref would then have to blow the whistle since he couldn't just allow a Habs player to try and pry it from under his body.

I think it's a pretty marginal distinction, since, considering the angle he took to the puck, Bernier still would have gone to cover the puck up with his glove once it got into his body and he still would have clearly had no intention of playing the puck. The intention would have been exactly the same, it's just the execution that would have been different - and, as far as I'm concerned, in a situation like that, it's the intention that really matters. If it's not a penalty in one situation, it shouldn't be a penalty in the other.

Another blown lead in the 3rd. It continues to be worrisome. Doesn't seem like this team has learned to protect a lead after that epic Game 7 collapse. In fact it seems like last year's team was better at it.

Can't remember where I read it, but after the Isles loss, the Leafs were near or at the bottom of the league in third period leads given up (with Calgary). This loss may have put them in last. Couldn't find that stat anywhere this evening, but I didn't try very hard either. :)

I think it's a pretty marginal distinction, since, considering the angle he took to the puck, Bernier still would have gone to cover the puck up with his glove once it got into his body and he still would have clearly had no intention of playing the puck.

And I think that still would have been called a penalty. The distinction I was talking about has everything to do with intent, not execution. If a goalie races for the puck and intends to stop the play, whether by jumping on the puck or just allowing it to come to him from within the faceoff dot, it should be a penalty. And the rulebook 100% supports that.

The only way that's not a penalty is if a goalie lunges to the puck with his stick in order to try pokechecking it away (which is what most goalies do in that situation and is something Bernier has done regularly in the past) and he misses it and the puck goes under him. Or if the player gets to the puck first and shoots it into the goalie and then the goalie covers it. I think those situations are what commonly happens when no penalty is called. But I honestly don't remember seeing a goalie lunging for the puck and covering it like Bernier did very often.

I'm also not convinced about the Kessel penalty. On the one replay, it looked like the puck hit the top of the glass on the way down.

I watched this a bunch of times from the two angles CBC had, it's hard to say. The puck was fluttering quite a bit so it's hard to say if it changed direction from hitting the glass, but I don't think it did. Kessel's reaction was pretty telling too.

For me though the interesting thing about that is if the puck didn't hit the glass, is it because Markov collided into the boards which caused the glass to move back a few inches. The timing would have had to have been perfect (and I'm not saying that Markov did it on purpse), but it's certainly possible the glass moved just enough to allow the puck to have gone out.

How many more bonehead plays from Bernier are we gonna get this year?

I kind of felt he was charging out to play it as he has before and decided on his way out that his best course of action was to cover it.  If the rule is that it's a penalty, then it's a penalty.  I just honestly didn't for a second think there was a risk of a penalty on the play, and I imagine Bernier likely felt the same.

For me, the case that the rulebook shouldn't consider it a penalty is that it's not a no-risk play, and if the goalie fails to cover it up, it's highly likely to go in the net.  Sort of the opposite of "high-risk/high-reward", like "low risk of screwing it up, but high risk of a failed play ending up in the net".  Anyway, so it goes.

I'd say take the number of games Bernier starts the rest of the season and multiply that number by 1.

I don't see what's to argue about that penalty.  I think the only reason you don't see it called more is because it so rarely happens that a goalie races out to beat a player to the puck and covers it like that.  9 times out of 10 the goalie races out and pokes the puck away if he can.

It's basically to the letter of the rulebook.

The last two penalties were penalties, but it was the call against Gleason that turned the tide. The game should have never gone to overtime.

That said, the Leafs should have shown up in the first...

This!

I remember reading that we needed .500 hockey to make the playoffs after the break. Well... this was .500 hockey so far. As long as we stop having 3 point games in our division I don't care if we lose in overtime against every other division the rest of the year as long as we make the playoffs.

Call me crazy if you want ;)

For all the praise Bernier's puck handling skills received at the start of the year, he's certainly made some boneheaded plays with the puck.

I going to put this out there. Leafs should not take 15 mins to start playing. The second and third were good periods. The first line was good as normal. Our powerplay and dumb penalty by Bernier were our demise. I really don't understand why he covered it up or just stay in the net and the play happen, I mean it was only Bierre, he has not been that hot with the exception of the last game for the Habs. Just saying.

It's not the rulebook's job to protect him on risky plays.  If it's too risky to come out and play it, then he shouldn't.  He's not required to come out in that situation.  He chose to and must abide by the rules or face a penalty.

Regardless of whether the calls against were legitimate, it'd be nice if the Leafs could kill a penalty. It's incredibly frustrating to watch McClement stand in one place at the top of the circle covering nobody and allowing guys like Subban all the time in the world to hammer the puck (this occurred both five on four and four on three).

A non-aggressive PK just doesn't work in this league and the Leafs can't seem to let it go.

Especially in OT when giving a team a 4/3 is a huge advantage.  Refs let a lot of stuff go in OT, and rightly so.

I would think that this game was the ultimate argument for not letting referees selectively make calls.

That's probably the thing for me.  Hockey coming out of the previous lockout was unbearable with the number of "clutching" penalties that slowed the game down to a crawl but when you use the argument "well it's in the rule book" but don't use that argument the other 20 times something happens in a game, I have a problem with that.

Either call it all the time, or don't call it at all.

That sort of puts the League in an unwinnable spot though. Either they call things like obstruction or hooking the way they're written and that results in the post-lockout hockey you don't like or....what? No penalties? Re-writing hooking and obstruction to allow for the Refs to just not call it if they feel like it would detract from the drama of the game?

Right now they let the Refs use their judgment on some but not on things like the Bernier/Kessel penalties where there really isn't a ton of room for interpretation. It's not great, and the quality of refereeing in the league in general can be debated, but I don't know what the alternative is.

Well like in any sport if the refs called every penalty that occurs there would be nothing but. It's essential that they use discretion and I don't think too many would disagree. My point is that if they don't call the hook in OT that they called in the first then there's enough discretion available not to call Bernier there especially when the Habs already had a four on three in the OT.

There really isn't. Like the over the glass DOG it's a pretty simple yes or no rule. Flip teams in this situation and I don't think anyone here would be advocating that the Refs should stop calling blatant penalties because the Leafs had already had a PP.

I agree.  I think there was cause for the refs to be lenient with Bernier, but he left them no opportunity.  It was a clear-cut penalty.

You never really see it called especially with an opposing player so close.  Never seen it in OT either.  Oh well.

I can't even remember the last time a play like that happened, so that's probably why you don't see it called.  More often you see the puck come down the ice and the goalie cover it a step or two outside of the crease, and not in a 'race for the puck' scenario like this one was.
