Title: The Official Gaming Thread
Post by: Bleeding Blue & White on September 02, 2011, 03:47:03 PM
Anyone checking out the modern warfare 3 multiplayer stuff on call of duty xp?  So far it is looking like a rehash of mw2 to me.

Whatever. I'll still play the living crap out of it.

lol me too, one thing that is curious is it looks like if you want a kill to count now you have to collect the dogtags that people now drop when they die.  I think that could lead to getting a lot less kills or a lot less killstreaks anyways since a lot of times running to get those could mean you dieing.

From what I understand, that's a new multiplayer mode. So that won't be the default method of getting a kill.

Watched a bit of the live stream earlier.  There's now 3 types of killstreaks. One is called Support and once you hit 3 kills your killstreak doesn't reset....dumb imo. One of the others is called Specialist. if you get 8 kills you can use every perk in the game....also dumb imo.

There will also be dual scopes, the heartbeat sensor, a juggernaut recon team as well as bouncing betty landmines, controllable sentry guns etc.  Oh and sniper rifles are also secondary weapons again that you appear to be able to quickscope.

I was so pumped for this but I'm thinking it's gonna have to wait for a rental first.  MP is gonna be super lopsided.

That dogtag thing is a new game mode called Kill Confirm and not in regular multiplayer

Oh ok, regardless kill comfirm looks pretty sweet.

I like that they changed it from kill streaks to point streaks so that you can play more objectives because honestly I prefer playing really agressivly and getting more of a 1k/d to camping and having a good k/d but I don't feel rewarded enough for it.

I have so many mixed emotions on this. On one hand the graphics and Elite look pretty awesome but on the other hand dropshotting, quickscoping are still there and it's likely gonna be super air-support heavy which I hate.  I was gonna preorder but I think I'll rent first.

I want to try NHL 2012 as I haven't bought an NHL game since they took speedburst out.

I absolutely hate how there is no speedburst.  How the heck are players 1 speed throughout?  That is just so stupid to me.

Anyone know the reasoning why they took it out and if they ever considered putting it back in?

Well each player has different speed and acceleration ratings that will make them faster or slower than others. There also is a speed burst button (I think R2 on the ps3) that will cause the player to push the puck ahead and skate faster. You just can't hold it down anymore.

Yea, Xbox is the left analag control, I think you press it down 2 or 3 times to reach max speed burst, doesn't last that long though.

profile is stored online so i think youre fine there, data stored on hard drive, you can remove it and install it in your next machine, shouldnt be an issue IMO. HD can be found on left side of Ps3

You know it's funny, I've gone through 5 Xbox 360s and now I'll be buying my 2nd PS3, but the Nintendo I got in 1989 still works.

Sorry, I have to ask.  Is your xbox/ps3 housed inside a cabinet or something?  Or is it in an open area with lots of airflow?

PS3 is on top of a tv stand in the open. The Xbox is on the shelf below it, but the other 4 that broke were all in open areas.

I know what you're thinking but I probably treat my consoles better than I would treat my children :p

My ps3 is fully dead now. Won't even turn on. I have the 40GB console. I'm going out on Saturday to buy a 160GB console.

Normally I'd just copy the save files to a USB drive and transfer them that way, but since I can't turn the console on that's out of the question. Would I still be able to remove the HDD, install it in the 160GB console and copy the files to the USB in order to put them on the 160GB HDD? Did that make sense?

I really liked the ending, it made me sad and the last mission as Jack where you shoot the FBI guy felt really satifsfying.  I don't generally get emotional from video games so it felt really powerful to feel that strongly.

Well, I just called EB games to set one aside for me tomorrow so I'll get it then but like you, my only complaint with Asylum was that it was a little too short.  I completed all the Riddler challenges as well.

I'm usually not one to do all the "side missions/challenges" in games but I liked Asylum so much I finished it as much as I could.

I didn't like being forced into dueling him. I wanted to just walk up and blast him. Then again, I felt like blowing him away in pretty much every part of the game he's in. I was pretty disappointed with the ending. Jack is a little punk compared to John.

The best part of the ending was listening to that beautiful song "Dead Man's Gun".

Well, (don't let TMM or Almo'sGirl see this) apparently I'm the best mom in the universe. Battlefield came out at midnight Tuesday morning. I took my 16 year old up to Gamestop in the mall to pick up his preorder. AND, after we got home at almost 1 am, I told him he could skip first and second class on Tuesday to sleep in since he would obviously want to go home and play this new game for a couple hours. Getting ahead of all his buddies on Battlefield is more important than 1 phys ed class and 1 english class--they're reading Tale of Two Cities and he's already finished reading it: "what a stupid book" LOL.

So I rock as a parent, I suppose.

So...BF3...

judging by the number of sales I put through...most definitely NOT a COD killer. Batman definitely outsold it. Not enough preorders at my store to warrant a midnight launch.

MW3 is gonna blow it out of the water in terms of sales.

On a somewhat related note...I'm completely prepared for MW3 to be completely underwhelming.

I just couldn't get into BF3 on the console.  The game is epic in scale without a doubt, but the console versions are neutered graphics-wise and in scale by only allowing 12v12.  Makes for alot of slow games on big maps. If I was still a PC gamer I might be into it, but otherwise no thanks.  One PC downside is the whole Origin thing which is major lulz.  Terrible.

Now Uncharted 3, Arkham Asylum and MW3...heck yes.

Screw FPS games. So oversaturated with content right now...give me Halo and I'm set for FPS.

I'm incredibly disappointed with Battlefield 3. For starters, I'm not an online gamer, so there's really no point in me playing it. The campaign is alright but it feels tacked on and lazily done at the last minute. The story is obvious and cliche. They ripped off basic story elements from Black Ops and borrowed heavily from Medal of Honor and Generation Kill (they even rip some lines right out of the show!). I'll probably beat the campaign by Sunday and then what?

Without bots (once a staple of BF) this game is useless to me. It only requires a little bit of programming effort but i shouldnt really expect that from EA. Theyve always been about what looks cool and how much they can hype up their products over actually making good products. Hopefully MW3 has bots (doubt it). Otherwise I'll be sticking with Black Ops.

If you aren't into online gaming, do not pay 60 bucks for Battlefield 3. The only reason I have it is because it came with my new PS3.

I've refused to buy any titles that EA have had a hand in since Battlefield:Vietnam.  I'd be surprised if company policy wasn't to sell code as early in development as possible, and worry about making actually function later. I'm tired of paying for pre-beta code, and simply don't bother with EA titles anymore. I'm always disappointed in the quality, and playability in them. They typically fix up many of the issues, but usually not for about a year or more. You know...when they're almost ready to sell you their next beta code for $80.

Oh, and don't bother with the PC version. It doesn't really work:
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/10/battlefield-3-on-pc-doesnt-exactly-work-right-now-try-later.ars

Any game whose install procedure is described as "an exercise in rage-building frustration" is one to avoid.

Yeah, I agree on most counts. I thought the idea of your player gaining points for performing things like Sword swings made sense: Swing a sword, you eventually get better at it. But it began to take forever once you leveled it a bit, and I didn't see how it made much of a difference either way.

However, the voice work, according to one of the trailers, had a massive overhaul. They had something like 50 different actors - and they brought in Christopher Plummer.

I'm also confident they fixed some story elements. The one in Oblivion downright sucked, I hated the rinse and repeat route they took, so to speak.

Personally I haven't noticed too many bugs overall. People complained about bugs in Red Dead Redemption as well but I never seemed to catch any. I can forgive a box hovering in mid air if it happens once in a blue moon.

The world looks spectacular though, and I've been itching for the sequel to Oblivion for a while now. It also has that gritty feel that I wish Diablo III took instead of moving towards WoW graphics.

Yeah, that's sort of been the thing with their games for me. In Oblivion levelling was essentially optional and the difficulty scaled so that levelling was actually sort of detrimental. Then, in Fallout 3, they took away it being optional but still made things scale so that the most difficult quests were easiest to complete at your lowest levels.

However, the voice work, according to one of the trailers, had a massive overhaul. They had something like 50 different actors - and they brought in Christopher Plummer.

They've always had front end talent. Fallout had Liam Neeson and Malcolm McDowell. Oblivion had, if memory serves, Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean. It was the supporting voices that I always thought were stilted and unnatural.

I can trade in 3 games and get Uncharted 3 for no charge. Battlefield 3 will be one of them.

Yeah, I agree on most counts. I thought the idea of your player gaining points for performing things like Sword swings made sense: Swing a sword, you eventually get better at it. But it began to take forever once you leveled it a bit, and I didn't see how it made much of a difference either way.

Oh yeah, I agree here. Stilted is a good word for it, but I also thought the variety of voice actors was a major problem in Oblivion. Every race had the same voice actor. They've addressed the latter, but maybe not the former.

I'll be buying pretty much anything Bethesda makes.   Even when they screw up (dammit, Oblivion), their games are so mod-friendly that the player community can fix up most shortcomings.

Have you had to replace the batteries in your SNES cartridges?

I've been meaning to pick up an SNES on ebay, but replacing the batteries in the games sounds like a pain in the ass.

I am expecting some awesome Bethesda like bugs in Skyrim. For example, in Fallout:New Vegas after I left the Vegas strip I could not re-enter the strip without the game crashing all the time on the loading screen(on PS3). Quick Google search revealed that if I wore a sheriff's hat the game would load. Lo and behold it did. Amazing.

Yeah but New Vegas wasn't really a flagship title. It's not excuse not to have bugs but the amount of bugs in Vegas was a lot higher than Fallout 3. I don't think it'll be bug free but I definitely think they'll have bug issues a bit lower than in Fallout 3 (which I didn't think was that buggy).

And besides, name me a completely open world sandbox game that's 100% bug free. Even GTA and Red Dead Redemption had bugs.

Also, and someone who knows the mechanics of these things may correct me here, but New Vegas was developed by Obsidian and just used the engine from Fallout 3. So you can't really throw that at Bethesda's feet.

I agree. That's probably where they spent most of their time, at the expense of actual gameplay. They make a nice little 4 hr campaign that looks cool, then pretty much force you into online play.

I'll stick with Black Ops because in addition to Zombies (roughly equivalent of MW3s Spec Ops mode), they give me the option to play the multiplayer mode off line against the computer controlled bots. I can play at my own pace, and still go online if I want. I'm able to enjoy that game mode in my own way, which is what playing video games is supposed to be about.

I used to really like FPS games. For me though it was all single player. I remember games like Goldeneye, Medal of Honor and COD 2: the Big Red One having really enjoyable first person campaigns with story, varied gameplay and the whole thing.

I look at a lot of the games coming out now, and admittedly I don't play them so am speaking from some ignorance, and they just seem so limited. Basically spending 60 bucks for a ticket to multi-player and some tweaks to graphics and weaponry.

I don't know, just ranting. But it's definitely one big area of gaming that I just don't get.

Yeah, totally agree here. I mean, I like multiplayer online shooters, but that's why I purchased Day of Defeat and Red Orchestra: You don't have to pay a premium to play a solid online only game.

Goldeneye, Perfect Dark were good examples. Half Life 2 was actually insanely good, as was Bioshock. All these games kept me completely hooked and immersed in excellent single player modes.

I feel like the FPS genre is just reducing itself to the lowest common denominator.

A lot of them are - the way it seems is that, pretty much any FPS set in a realistic, war like setting is going to be heavy on the multiplayer while all but ignoring the single player these days. They're all about "pwning some n00bs" and other such lame expressions. Outside of the Bioshock and Resistance games, FPS games just don't interest me anymore.

They completely neglect the casual gamer by offering short, linear single player features with no options for customization. In the case of Battlefield 3, the campaign was a complete afterthought despite being touted as one of the selling points.

All of the game options lie in multiplayer, and aside from those few titles like Killzone and now Black Ops, you HAVE to be online to enjoy it. I dont have the motivation or, more importantly the time to "get better" at the game. There's nothing fun about being target practice for good players online. By limiting the options for people like me, its almost like the developers are telling me that they don't want me to play their games.

I dunno...I'm enjoying MW3 on the PS3 so far.  I mean sure is it a ton different than MW2?  Not really.  It's definitely different from Black Ops (some good ways, some bad ways).  Some real basic Pros and Cons as I only have about three hours in MP so far:

PROS:

- Playing MW3 you can definitely tell how sluggish BO was - MW2 runs like butter
- Not major, but maps load much faster.  Anyone notice how slowly maps loaded in BO?  The fastest loading ones came from DLC which weren't done by Treyarch.  Maybe that's telling
- Something simple like FINALLY being able to scroll through your killstreaks to decide what order to use them
- MW3 is definitely more run-and-gun with tighter maps.  This is a PRO to me
- I dig how you have to unlock everything for each weapon now, though in reality it's pretty easy to level up
- Air Support doesn't seem so overpowering and there seems to be lots of room for cover anyway
- COD Elite seems pretty cool but it's not even working right now lol
- Can quickly get into games. Searching seems super fast though the sheer amount of people playing right now is probably huge in that regard
- Noob Tube is nerfed.  I think I have only seen one person using it

CONS:
- Spawn points are atrocious on some maps like Dome and Mission for example (both great maps too).  What year is this that they can't do spawn points correctly?  BO sucked at this at launch too and they still weren't great after patched
- Menu system seems clunky.  Takes a lot of clicks to see info or to get to certain screens
- Recoil on most guns I have tried seem very minimal.  Add to that the "Kick" perk which lowers your recoil and you are a finely tuned aiming machine
- CONSTANT, and I mean CONSTANT UAVs in the air.  I think this is a side effect to the way they have set up killstreaks in MW3.  I guess it's not a bad thing as it's a good team bonus, but as someone who likes to shoot down UAVs hearing that one is constantly in the air makes me wish I had 100 rockets
- It's really easy to level up and especially to go PRO on perks.  Treyarch handled this better I think
- Obviously you can't customize your character/emblem like you could BO which is a turn off to some
- I heard the party system is broken even after a patch but I haven't tried it myself
- I find the audio weak.  It seems to lack bass that MW2 and BO had.  I have only played in headphones and it's quite noticeable
- They bring back the heartbeat monitor?  The worst attachment of all time?  Different ways to counter it to be sure, but man nobody except the lamest of the lame like or even use this thing

I found the Bioshock series to be great single player, and Bioshock 2 to have awesome multiplayer. I preferred it in many ways to COD's as it had many different angles going on (perks, powers, being able to be the Big daddy etc.). It was, and is, very imaginative with great maps (albeit small) and great gameplay.

Looking forward to the next one!

So basically you're looking for a 2D, action RPG?

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was on of my favs growing up. No increases in strength or anything, but pretty fun.

Otherwise, man oh man, I can't think of anything. Diablo II? Technically it's not 3D.

As for world domination and resources and such:

Civ 4 is good and cheap, Total War series was really good. If you're talking old school then you can't go wrong with Age of Empires.

The best rpg that almost follows those rules I have played would have to be "Final Fantasy Tactics."  It isnt as intricate as some of the newer rpg's and I have never played such a satisfying game since. (It is from PS1, however).

Also, Civilization Revolution PS3? Although it isn't free. Wait, how can you get all that for no $???

I was stacking books on a shelf in my house in Whiterun, one of Skyrim's major cities, when I noticed a weapon rack right beside it. I set a sacrificial dagger in one slot, an Orcish mace in the other. They were on display for nobody but me and my computer-controlled housecarl, Lydia, who sat at a table patiently waiting for me to ask her to go questing. The chest upstairs was reserved for excess weapons and armor, the bedside table for smithing ingots and ores, the one next to the Alchemy table for ingredients. I'd meticulously organized my owned virtual property not because I had to, but because tending to the minutia of domestic life is a comforting break from dealing with screaming frost trolls, dragons, a civil war, and job assignments that never seem to go as planned. It's even a sensible thing to do; a seemingly natural component of every day existence in Skyrim, one of the most fully-realized, easily enjoyable, and utterly engrossing role-playing games ever made.

I don't think I've ever been more excited to pick up a video game. I want to ditch work and get it.

Going at lunch.

Friend picked it up as well... basically said it set a new standard for open world RPGs. Production value is insane. There are some bugs, like floating boxes and people jiggling after death, but with a game this big with this much options it's going to be easy to overlook imo.

Right now it's got 94 on Metacritic - Universal Acclaim. It sounds like almost everyone's awestruck so far.

Sweet. I bought Dark Souls a way back and it came with 10 dollar gift card and $10 off Skyrim coupon so picked up Skyrim at lunch for 39.99 and even got the steelbook case. Game will prolly take 100 hours to get through so 40 cents an hour is a good deal for entertainment.

SKYRIM...... Midnight tonight...... I'm getting it!

That was a fantastic line up of nerds.

Where was the midnight launch??

Hey, Christina Aguilera was at the launch party with Bethesda ;)

I just went to the local EB games on Thursday night and they told me I could pre-pay and come back at midnight to pick it up.

I'm still trying to get my bearings in the game. I'm so used to playing Oblivion I know it like the back of my hand. I wish it was easier to switch between favourite weapons/spells on PS3. Seems kinda cumbersome imo.

Otherwise the game is so immersive. The fights are intense, I got my ass handed to me a couple times now for being too adventurous or... pickpockety :)

Skyrim's pretty good.   I do miss the days when companies made PC games though.   Seems like every game coming out now is just a shoddy port of a console game.

The interface and controls are godawful, but looking past that, the game itself is pretty good.   Better than Oblivion, but still not as good as Morrowind.

The left mouse button controls your right hand, and the right mouse button controls your left hand.   Come on, guys.

Picked up Arkham City finally. Only a little ways into it but already I'm pretty impressed by how they widened the scope of the game. I do have some minor complaints. I kind of think they lost a lot of the great atmosphere the first game had and I kind of wish they could break the idea that the villains need to constantly be using terrible, terrible puns but, aside from that, pretty great.

Yeah, I'm playing it as well and the thing about Skyrim is the world is incredibly believable, much moreso than in Oblivion. It's got this gritty medieval realism compared to Oblivion's more fantasy style, and its also got a lot more variety. The caves and dungeons look different from each other, whereas in Oblivion everything seemed to look the same.

The terrain is just incredible and the score is fantastic. There's a lot more to do in this game than in Oblivion as well. I also love the addition of smithing and cooking, and the game is 10x harder than Oblivion so far. I used to just rush things before, now I can barely kill a cougar without getting hurt, and a Giant and Mammoth handed my ass to me in two hits.

Even regular characters can kill you if you're not careful. I was attacking a Khajit bandit. I almost killed him and he gave my a powerbomb for half health and killed me.

Skyrim has got to be Game Of The Year.  It's just fantastic.  My wife loves it as well.  We usually play it together.  Well, I play it while she watches.  I love everything about the game except the switching between spells/weapons.  I think there is a bug in the game.  Does it pause on you for a few secs when you bring up the favorites or any menu for that matter?  It does for me and it's annoying as heck.  Other than that, the world is just amazing.  So beautiful and the game is so deep.

Yeah, I don't like the switching method at all, it's slightly cumbersome.

I don't get lag at all. The only time it lags is if it's autosaving when I pull up a menu.

I've gotten lost in the game so much. I played for 3-4 hours tonight and I still feel like I accomplished so little. There's just so much to do.

I wish I could explore the Skyrim world, but using Morrowind's engine.   But with Skyrim's levelling system, that's an improvement.

Some aspects in this game are pretty rough, but I've managed to be sneaky by using the Sanguine Rose and getting a Daedra to do my dirty work, heh. You get it in one of the most memorable quests I've played in a game. I love that the game is so varied - it's not just fetch quests, you actually get involved in the politics of Skyrim a lot more and the quests can be quirky and interesting. I love the way they introduce the Dark Brotherhood as well. I'm liking Skyrim the more I play it, it's great.

I'm in the midst of respecing my warrior to more of a battlemage. I think hand to hand is little weak, while magic tends to be stronger.

I am also enjoying MW3. Have you played BF3? or anyone on this board played both MW3 and BF3 and can give me some feedback? I only have MW3 but some of my friends say BF3 is better, I won't ever let go of my MW3 but may try out BF3 if anyone here has played both and have some insight? I played Socom 4 online and hated it (way too many things going on for me to focus) so any reviews on BF3/MW3 comparision would be great :)

You die in too few bullets in MW3. You get shot in the back WAY more than in BO. Maybe it's my lack of map knowledge this early in the game, but I feel like I'm CONSTANTLY getting shot in the back.

I had a really good KDR in BO (2.0+), and in MW3 I'm lucky if I break even (current KD is like .80). I feel like I'm encountering more guys in corners. More guys in shadows. More guys prone. More guys prone in a shadow in a corner aiming down sights looking directly at a window.

I'm not enjoying this game, but I blame the community for this more than the game developers. I don't have a huge problem with much in this game aside from everybody who plays it.

25 hours into the game and I haven't even played a single main quest aside from the mandatory beginning. The quests are extremely varied and interesting.

Battlemage is the way to go. I usually use dual cast on some of the super tough enemies (centurions and the like) as it allows me to keep distance and dual cast while I back pedal. Stoneflesh helps a lot when tanking in hand to hand.

I also use archery in sneak mode to peel away at an enemy when I get a chance.

I've been trying to build myself up as a warrior, so far.  But it seems like all the 1 handed weapons I've found are fairly weak.  Anything big (bear, frost troll) can murder me pretty good.  I even have a follower helping me out.  It can get tough, quick.

I'm in the midst of respecing my warrior to more of a battlemage. I think hand to hand is little weak, while magic tends to be stronger.

Regular swords are fairly weak early on but properly enchanted they can be devastating. Go to Azura's Shrine and complete its quest, it will make keeping enchanted weapons fully charged much easier.

I have played it and didn't care for it at all on console.  It's a HELL of a lot better on PC though if you have the hardware.  The console versions are neutered gfx-wise and gameplay-wise IMO. 12vs12 is the max on consoles and with the size of the maps and general epic feel of the game this is not nearly enough players to be fun for me.  And people who don't like campers in COD will rage hard in BF3 at people going sniper so they can lay down and try to snipe instead of actually playing the map.  And from my (albeit limited) experience everyone was going engineer and sniper making the different "classes" somewhat useless.  The vehicles/planes are without a doubt cool but I kinda got annoyed with operating one being alot players' focal point.  And often they would get in and just do donuts and stuff.

Just not my thing (on console at least).

You die in too few bullets in MW3. You get shot in the back WAY more than in BO. Maybe it's my lack of map knowledge this early in the game, but I feel like I'm CONSTANTLY getting shot in the back.

I was having the same problem getting shot in the back until the last two nights where I have now become waaay more comfortable with the maps and just the general feel of the game coming from BLOPS.  It took 7 or 8 hours of gameplay though.  I'm more familiar with common hiding spots and frequently traveled paths, and have started to find which routes I like to take on the maps.

It's definitely less forgiving than in BLOPS where if you didn't get the first shot off you still had a chance to win the shootout.  MW3 not so much.  It seems like the guns have less recoil, and adding the KICK option to the gun makes the spread even tighter.  Maybe this is a big reason.

Quote
I had a really good KDR in BO (2.0+), and in MW3 I'm lucky if I break even (current KD is like .80).

I was also 2.0+ in BLOPs.  I'm at 1.50 in MW3 right now, but that's up .2 in the last two nights now that I am more comfortable with the game.

Quote
I feel like I'm encountering more guys in corners. More guys in shadows. More guys prone. More guys prone in a shadow in a corner aiming down sights looking directly at a window.

I think there are a couple reasons for this.  Similar to map packs when they first come out, people are a little more tentative while they learn the maps.  But also in MW3 the maps are very "busy" and have lots of cars and other things to hide behind which I agree, is annoying and they over did it.  I think there are alot more casual players playing now and it will eventually thin out which will also help.

Quote
I'm not enjoying this game, but I blame the community for this more than the game developers. I don't have a huge problem with much in this game aside from everybody who plays it.

I'd give it a little more time.  I've rally been enjoying it this week and 90% of that is probably just because I am doing alot better than last week.  I don't think the COD community is any worse than the community I played in for Quake, UT, HL, CS, TFC, TF2 etc, but it is a little magnified with so many people playing it.

I dunno if it's just me, but the annoying little kiddies who love camping and boosting and whatever seemed far less prevalent in BO.

Also, I played a little on my own last night (not with my usual party), and I absolutely tore up the other team on more than a few occasions. I'm wondering if the matchmaking drastically changes depending on if you're in a party or not? I know that if I was playing with a buddy of mine who hadn't prestiged in BO, he was always party leader, and we consistently got weaker competition...I'm wondering if the quality of players changes based on if you're partied up?

Tried sniping for the first time ever. I'm awful at it. Much better with the ACOG than the regular scope though.

Some aspects in this game are pretty rough, but I've managed to be sneaky by using the Sanguine Rose and getting a Daedra to do my dirty work, heh. You get it in one of the most memorable quests I've played in a game. There's also a good weapon at the end of a quest called House of Horrors in Markarth. It's the abandoned house there - a citizen suspicious of the abandoned house will open up the quest for you. He appeared for me right outside of the abandoned house.

Also go into the bar and have a drinking contest in Markarth. You won't regret it ;)

Probably the closest thing, and I bet people have made zombie apocalypse mods for it.

A survival horror type Fallout set in present day, where resources are scarce, and you can't just shoot your way through everything.   I imagine searching abandoned houses for supplies while carrying little more than a crowbar, and hoping there aren't any zombies waiting for your around the next corner.

I guess what I'm saying is that I want to play The Walking Dead.

Well now, this is just delightful. Obsidian Ė fresh off the at times (read: Old World Blues) hysterical Fallout: New Vegas Ė is teaming up with Trey Parker and Matt Stone to create a ďfull-scaleĒ South Park RPG. This is no quick social or mobile cash-in, either. Itís a bonafide big-budget console/PC production backed by THQ.

On top of that, Parker and Stone are both writing and performing dialog, according to Game Informer. In other words, expect some of the most profane, probably amazing dialog options ever conceived. The gameís set for release ďsometime in 2012,Ē but expect more info as soon as the new Game Informer issue hits.

It's not April 1st, right?   This may actually happen?

I'm a fan of NHL 11. I think it had perfect balance. There are some improvements with 2012 like proper saves and the like but it is so goddamned hard to check a guy off the puck and stick checking never works anymore. It's far more frustrating to play.

I want to keep going at NHL 12 but I don't think my thumb can handle it.  After my first season and playoffs on Pro over a few weeks my thumb is all raw and sore.  (The need to push the stick in for speed burst is the killer, makes it impossible to use a light touch)   I want to try All Star and/or some of the other modes but I don't think my poor thumb or controller can handle any higher intensity.

Oh well I just got into Skyrim anyways, that should be fun and a bit less stressful than OT and shootouts with a bleeding thumb.

I liked Fallout 3. The series has a great atmosphere and sense of story that they maintained really well through the game.

That said I found it a lot like Oblivion where the combat was pretty sloppy and the way they scaled the difficulty of the monsters was kind of counter-productive.

I recently went back to World Of Warcraft after a 2 1/2 year hiatus. A buddy sent me a Scroll of Resurrection. So I was given Cataclysm free, 1 character upgraded to level 80 free, starter level 80 gear, 4 new 20 slot bags etc....

I can't believe all the changes in the game since the last time I played. It used to be such a chore to level (60 - 70 was a nightmare)... But I've already levelled from 80-85 (took me just over 1 week), all my gear was 232 item level with the free gear, now I'm at 352 item level, 1 more item level point and I can do every heroic Dungeon / raid. I haven't had to grind out any mats yet (yay!) and I've made over 7k in gold.... I'm a NE Hunter - BM Spec... Yay! I don't have to keep my pet 'happy' anymore and kill beasts for meat drop, nor make / buy, shells / arrows, for my bow / gun.... I'm really liking the changes they've made.  :)

Is it wrong that I have no idea what any of that really means?

I like games and all just never got around to WoW.

I guess the appeal is you live in a fantasy world, but man, I just can't commit my life to something like that.

I played WoW for a while and it can be completely addicting.  Now I spend some of the time I would have on WoW on Skyrim, kinda the same vibe as WoW and a lot of fun.

Any fans of the Silent Hill franchise here?

I just started playing the newest game and it is everything I expected and more.
Yes, me!  I've been a huge fan of all the Silent Hill games since the very first one.  I pre-ordered Downpour but haven't had the time to start it yet, it's still sitting on my shelf.  Glad to hear you're enjoying it.  Everything I've seen and heard about it so far makes me pretty sure I will too.

I've played maybe an hour total so far on my 46" HDTV ... Excellent!

Coming across some problems now. The game saves automatically quite often but I have had issues with it saying its saving but it doesn't actually save.  A quick search online and it turns out this is a problem for many people.

Very annoying.

Yeah, it does take time to play, but with the changes they made, it's easier for the casual gamer to go play for a couple hours now. Before there was a lot more time dedication needed to play.

There is a subscription monthly fee, it's $15/month (if you pay monthly) and gets cheaper is you pay for more months up front... Doesn't xbox live cost money? I can see why they have to charge though, I'm sure it's a nightmare to maintain all the servers and like 10 million people playing worldwide (or however many people are still playing)

I don't know how to explain without spoiling stuff.

This is the workaround I've found. During your game you can pause and choose load game and see the last saved point without actually loading the game.  If its there it's saved.

Sometimes I look at it and the last saved point is 10 or 15 minutes old even though the save icon was on screen just a minute earlier.

Thanks for not spoiling anything, I never really thought about that when I asked.  I am familiar with that load screen and will check it every once in a while to make sure it's saving.  Thanks!  I'm loving the game so far, it kind of reminds me of the original game in some ways.  I think it's cool how Murphy reacts to some of the strange things he's seeing & hearing too.

So because I'm not generally up on these things has a consensus emerged as to which of the new game consoles will be the one to buy? I'm doing a little bit of preliminary research and it seems as though the general perception is that the PS4 will be better for playing games but that the Xbox One will have the edge as more of an integrated Multimedia thing. Does that sound right?

From what I can tell, the XBox One will be pretty heavily focused on Kinect type games, whereas the PS4 is going to be more about traditional controller based gaming.

Fair enough. Again, from my pretty limited reading it seems as though most games are coming out for both systems but while, as you say, the PS4 seems to have certain technical advantages in that area the Xbox does certain things that make it work more as an all-in-one sort of thing. I was reading that the PS4 won't work as a media server the way the PS3 did or support MP3 playback whereas the Xbox will allow for voice controlled TV use which I like as a very lazy person.

Most major titles will be available on both systems, yeah. It's more that a significant chunk of the XBone exclusives seem to be Kinect heavy titles. The lack of media streaming on the PS4 is a huge drawback, though, it seems like they're leaning towards backtracking on that after the huge public outcry after it was announced. It probably won't be available by launch day, but it seems likely to appear in an early software update.

There is a software update already. First thing you do when you turn on your new PS4 will be to download it. Maybe it's that.

The PS4 is better performance wise, speed specifically I think due to faster RAM and the XBone will have better non-gaming features.

The PS4 is cheaper too, if you don't buy the add ones that come with the Xbox, like the kinect stuff.

The exclusive games will probably always cancel each other out.

Yeah, online, it matches you up with people from the same division and roughly the same quality of team.

I play with Celtic mostly, so I run through most people if they are a team with comparable stats.

I'll probably check out FUT at some point, is that the mode where you pay money to buy player packs and the like?

Verdict?

I've only played it for maybe 2 hours. 30 minutes in single player just to see how it feels, then about 1.5 hours in online Multiplayer. I like it, it's a bit of a resource hog so you'll need a good rig to run it with a 64 bit OS (7 or 8 - I'm running vista, so the game is a little choppy, even though I have a 680GTX video card and i5 2500k cpu). The maps are a lot larger than previous COD games, and I really liked a few of the maps I played, I felt lost. LOL.

I think I ended last night around level 5 or 6, 1.33kdr (112/84), it'll take more time before I can really see what the weapons/perks etc... are like.

So far, I recommend if you are a COD / FPS Online type person.

Yeah, it's completely different than other COD's, if you just run around you'll just end up getting shot, the maps are very large so you are tempted to run to find people and for me, that's usually a bad idea as I keep gettting killed while running cause I don't see anyone, lol.

The game is fun, but it was a little frustrating last night as it's not running really smooth for me, it lags during gunfights, I think because of my vista OS, which sucks. I turned down the graphics, but then the game looks awful and it's hard to see people... Catch 22. I may need an OS upgrade.... Fun.

I've been playing NHL14 and really digging the old school controls - the last installment I played was 08 - I had given up on the controls.

Anyway, I've been kind of digging the music that they chose for the game, and 1 in particular In the end by black veil brides.

So I mosey on over to youtube to check out the video - and good lord does the look not match the sound. Made me feel like a crusty old man watching that...

I guess in retrospect how different do they look than Motley Crue did back in the day...

Console graphics and PC graphics are 2 different animals. I have BO2 for ps3 and PC - my PC kills the graphics of the ps3, BO2 looks way better on the PC.

I'm guessing they had to tone down Ghosts a bit for the ps3 to run it smoothly.

Talking story mode or online? I hate the new unlocking feature in online play. My biggest motivation to play in the past was leveling up and unlocking new guns and perks. Now being able to use those points things to unlock anything you want takes all the challenge out of it.

Can anyone explain to me like I'm 5 the other online features of NHL14 other than strictly one-on-one versus play?  Like these leagues and stuff.  I've clicked into them a few times but have no idea what is going on.

I wish games still came with actual manuals and not the weak one you press a button to read.

Yeah, but you need to earn the points to unlock the items... It's not like your given 100 points off the bat for free and can unlock every gun, attachment, perk etc... It takes time.

So far, I'm enjoying it. I played BO2 since it came out (I also played COD4, BO, MW3 etc....) and Ghosts has a different feel to it. The maps are larger with more buildings to go into etc... I can't play this game like I played BO2. A lot more tactical than just run and gun, imo.

Yeah but I pretty much have what I want by level 10. The points are pretty easy to get.

COD Ghosts sucks.

The network code is crap...  I've seen people get killed without even getting shot...

Their physics is crap... Just like last iteration, if you see the top inch of someone's head behind an object, be careful because apparently they can see you 100% and can shoot you completely unobstructed by the object in front of them...  And the dogs can jump onto a van?  Like 6 feet high?  Really?  ...REALLY???

Their damage system is arbitrary... I mean, you can shoot someone several times, but they'll still kill you with a single knife cut...  And the dogs... apparently they can take about 6-10 rounds, but a single bite and you're dead?

What a waste of money.

I've been playing World of Tanks.  It always has a frustration level to it.  For most part, not getting killed is the #1 objective but nobody follows.

Could be. Still, it's a little confusing to me. When I drove by my local Future Shop the day that the PS4 came out there were people lined up at 730 in the morning for it. I just pre-ordered mine and picked it up in the afternoon. I don't get the "I'm willing to freeze my butt off but not willing to waltz in a week earlier" instinct.

Yeah. I don't get it, either. I mean, on days like Black Friday, I understand it a little more - it's an opportunity to get a deal you can't get from pre-ordering or, in a lot of cases, from buying online. Other than that, though, it makes no sense. If you can afford to buy the thing in the first place, odds are, you have access to a credit card and the internet. On top of that, I don't really understand the need to go out and get the new gaming console the day it comes out, any way. I prefer to wait until there's a better library of games available.

Yeah, I can't speak to any need to be an early adopter or anything. My PS3 just died and I figured I might as well buy the current model to replace it.

Ordered the XBox One Bundle on the weekend.  Funny thing is the system itself was "Out of Stock" but the bundle package was available.  Chose two games of 4: Forza and Ryse: Son of Rome.  Now I checked today and it is listed "Out of Stock" too.
First gen Blu-Ray player has been dead the last few months so this will help in that department too.

Hmm never thought of that, my Wii is modded so I can play downloaded games on it and DVD's, but I just packed up the wii and put it in the storage room as I picked up a Wii U last week, saw a commercial for the Wii Sports Club game and it was enough for me to purchase the Wii U, along with getting the 2 mario bros games with it and a $40 Walmart gift card.

May need to do what you did though if I can't get a copy of Bubble Bobble by the end of the year, that game is a classic.

Relatively, yes. There's guides online. If all you want is the old school games, all you need is a big enough SD card. If you want to get Wii games as well, you'll need an external HD.

Wow that's awesome. I may have to get a wii for cheap just for that now.

Otoh, I think I'm finally sold on the 3DS. All the games look nostalgic and fun. Plus that new Zelda game is a direct sequel to A Link to the Past -  my favourite Zelda game,  and apparently could be the best one since Wind Waker.

I followed an instructional on youtube. It wasn't overly complicated. There's a couple programs to download for your PC but not much too it.

Don't know if anyone here is playing grand theft auto online but hackers and modders have completely ruined the game.

They have figured out how to manipulate one minute jobs that should pay maybe 800 to 1000 dollars to paying BILLIONS! What they do next is the killer. They share the money with everyone in the session.

Without doing a thing, I had just started he game up, I was gifted over $150,000,000.00.  A completely insane amount of money that is virtually impossible to spend. This happened maybe a week ago and now it's rampant. I'm constantly being given money.

Apparently Rockstar is shutdown for the holidays but I don't know how they fix this issue.  Rockstar must be pissed because they were also selling cards. I think $20 of real money would get you 1.25 million GTA money.

I've now got a quarter of a billion dollars and I've heard stories of people with trillions.

Message from Rockstar:

In regards to reports of hacking and cheating in Grand Theft Auto Online, we are working on a fix that will remove any GTA$ gained through these blatant exploits, as well as prevent this from happening in the future. We'll also be taking appropriate measures very soon to punish anyone that we've discovered manipulating GTA Online in this manner (as we've stated previously, players who have received large sums of GTA$ but not engaged in any game manipulating through exploits can rest assured Uknowing they have nothing to fear).

If you have been gifted a large sum of money or collected a large bounty and would like to have the money removed from your account immediately, you can submit a request to us to have your balance properly adjusted. Otherwise, the money you've been gifted will be removed once our upcoming fix is in.

I bought it when it was in the beta stage and gave it a try. It's definitely a lot more like the final version of EHM that was a paid game as well, not the classic EHM. It was still pretty buggy being in the beta stage so I didn't get much into it and then just never opened it again. Maybe with the season being over I'll give it a try again. I'll have to see if I can re-wind it to last summer though if I'm doing the Leafs.

I actually had a hard time trading Clarkson in my Be a GM in NHL14 - all the GMs said they'd love the deal if they could handle his cap hit.  Eventually moved him with retaining some salary.

And I found an HF Boards thread on FHM, sounds like it's still pretty buggy.  I'll wait awhile on it then.

That's become an issue with EA. With every new generation of system, you generally have to wait until they've released a couple version of a game before they release one that isn't awful.

The lack of competition in the sports gaming industry really shows through.  Even 2Ksports has been declining with the NBA series due to a lack of competition.  It would be great if they were consistent in improving the game.  I feel like every year they just tinker with the same times and a lot of the flaws in the game just get magnified in the other direction.

Goalies too good one year...they are awful the next year....back to far too good the following year.
Hits are excessive and Phil Kessel shoots Chara half-way across the ice one year....Chara is indestructible the next year.

I might buy NHL 2018 or something after a few more years of new games but I don't expect much change in the mean time.

Most stores usually do.  My one disappointment was that the weekly flyer featured a GTA5 bundle that comes with a download code for The Last of Us, but having gone to 4 Shoppers and called many more, almost all stores had either 1 or 2 of such bundles, and they were all sold out early in the morning.  I got a The Last of Us PS4 instead (same price), and the alternative was Destiny.  GTA isn't entirely my kind of game anyway, but I'll take an extra game for free if it's available.

Garden Warfare is a lot of fun.

For any PS3 owners that never pulled the trigger on South Park: The Stick of Truth but wanted to, it's now a $5 download from the Playstation Store.

I like South Park, though I haven't watched the show for many years.  I bought the game for the $5 download (and was probably willing to pay $20 in store).  I hope not too much of the humour relies on me being caught up with the show.

I don't think it will be an issue. I've always really likely South Park but like you I haven't exactly been watching the show religiously. Just the odd episode here and there. They refer back to some of the shows core jokes, but as long as you enjoy the general humour of the show you'll really like the game.

Nothing against Rayman or indie games but that doesn't seem close to being fair. You'd think it would be One getting the better titles

Problem is both of those games came out before the Xbox One (although Tomb Raider had an updated version released after for next-gen). The one usually gets smaller games just because the system is still recent enough that full games released for it can't be given away for free yet.

I won't complain about getting anything for free, but both Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider were released in March 2013 on the 360, so 2 years ago. I would imagine that most people who  really wanted to play those games would have probably done so by now. So again, the whole Games for Gold program is great, but they have good reasons for giving games away for free. The next-gen version of Raymond Legends is only a year old, and IDARB was a brand new game. It's not like One users got completely screwed over.

Yeah I used to refer to that screen as the one last bong hit screen also.
Sometimes it's there yeah in one of the small windows that shows different features. You cant miss it under the gaming section - one rb over from home screen

Totally not complaining! I'm loving Tombraider and I'm anxious to start playing Bioshock - my OCD prohibits me from playing more than one title at a time but I've already dl'd it. Did that new version of Monopoly come out for the One as well? It's basically Monopoly on steroids and with multiplayer - lots of fun

The Playstation equivalent to that is subscription Playstation Plus. A couple free games every month for each system, PS3, PS4 and Vita. Like with XBox, it's not the same games for the different systems.

Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite in a single month is a great month in my books;  both are great games.

With the PSN sale, for anybody (or for their kids) who loves Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is a beautiful and charming game and story.  My 10-year-old loved it, and I enjoyed watching him play it.  It has many, many hours of gameplay and storyline.  Well worth the $5.

I didn't know we had an official gaming thread :)

I'd like to announce my Let's Play series on YouTube
My channel is IntoTheGame but we are new so its easier to search for MetalRaven705.
We have 11 videos up so far having just started at the end of April.  We release Mon, Wed and Fri. Episodes are approx 13-16 mins.
NOT SAFE FOR KIDS!!! We cuss and are generally inappropriate. (Thinking strongly of releasing a PG Jr version)

Yeah I have a 5 year old too and its not fun that he can't even watch these, I want to do PVZ as well at some point which will require censorship and id rather not attach it to the "adult" channel. Problem is getting my players on board heh

Remastered versions of the Uncharted Trilogy have finally been announced. October 9th. Those, Battlefront, and Fallout 4 (probably) are all coming out in the span of a couple of months.

Uncharted isn't as good as Last of Us as individual games but are otherwise quite good.  Definitely worth playing.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the Witcher right now.

Yeah it was officially announced yesterday, trailer and all. There just wasn't a release date but I'm assuming it'll be October-December.

Never played the other ones, but I've seen people compare it's scope to DA:I which I loved. Might have to check that one out. I've had Shadow of Mordor sitting on my desk for months now too though, and Arkham Knight will soon be taking up my time.

I kind of view The Witcher as somewhere in between Skyrim and DA:I.  CD Projekt Red also deserves a lot of praise for being a gamer friendly company.  They are releasing their DLC free and have done a number of other good things.  It's just good gamer practice to support them.

Agreed on the time crunch of good games to play.  I liked Shadow of Mordor but the story is pretty bare bones and conflicts a lot of Tolkien based history if you get stuck on that.  It plays very similar to the Arkham series and the nemesis system is pretty fun to mess around with.

Any thoughts on whether The Witcher is accessible if you haven't played the first two? I played about fifteen minutes of the second one so I think I know the basic premise but other than the plot/world details are lost on me.

If you are really big on background story immersion it probably won't be as enjoyable but it is easily playable without any knowledge of the previous two games.   Some side quests and dialogue are lacking without context but the story is straightforward enough that it doesn't need you to know every last detail.

It's at times like this that I can comfortably use my role as an educator to explain that video games have been shown to decrease the rates of Dementia by up to 50%...well really it has more to do with staying active with new learning and new technologies but I think I can safely say that it is a vital activity for your overall wellbeing.

Burned through Arkham Knight shortly after it's release. Would give it a 7/10 and rate it 3rd in the series. For me didn't give me anything ground breaking compared to the others, outside of shoving the batmobile down your throat.  Complete lack of in storyline bosses was a big downturn from Arkham City.

Does anyone play MLB 15 The Show? Is there ANY way to prevent your RTTS character from getting traded? No matter how many times I restart, I always get traded. I don't understand why they let you pick the team you want to play for, but don't give you the option to turn off trades?

I only buy the game for this mode, and it's not fun when I can't play for the team I want. Back to MVP 2005 for me.

Anyone get the new NHL16?  What are your thoughts?  Just got it last week and only played one game.  Mechanics seem a bit better.  Not a fan of all of the "bubble" help while you're playing but I'll have to figure out how to turn it off.

I finally started playing NHL 15 and kadri is nowhere to be be found... It's weird.

And I'm sure this will be fun. Gane 7 round 2 against Boston I have an 8-6 lead with 70 seconds left... I lost 9-8.

Oh and another thing that was funny is that Horton is actually playable... Forgot about that guy...

If anyone is a ps+ member mass effect 2 is free right now... Might be the best game I've ever played.

Also assassin's Creed revelations is free as well... Game is worth playing just for the ending.

Anyone else playing their social life into oblivion via Fallout 4?

Good timing on this, I spent an obscene amount of time this weekend finishing the main quest. Still have a lot of side quests to get around to but I'll probably take a small break until I jump back in.

How far are you/which route are you taking?

I played it a little. I liked it but I'm sort of starting to feel an encroaching uniformity to Bethesda's games that I'm a little iffy on. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the way they streamlined the mechanics of it.

It's one of those games like GTA V where i just have this urge to give up my life for like a month to finish whatever I think is worth finishing and probably never play it again haha.

How do you mean which route? Like which faction I'm aligned with? I really like the Railroad, and I usually play the first go around as a good character... plus I feel the game disproportionately awards characters for being good. How about you?

One thing I want to add is I don't feel like this game is as dark as Fallout 3. I remember blowing up Megaton going wow... I'm actually evil! This one... meh, not so much. I hear the Brotherhood of Steel can get pretty heavy though.

I started with the Minutemen just because they were the first faction to come up for me. Did all (or most) of their quests and then jumped ship to the Railroad. Pretty sure you can do all 3 of the faction's quests, it's not until you reach a certain point of the main storyline that it forces you to just choose one to align with. But I had a friend who went with the BoS and we compared stories, the Railroad was definitely the more interesting option.  I don't know how far you are, but things get a lot more fun I thought once you reach the Institute.

And yeah, all factions (even the Institute) think that what they're doing is best for the Commonwealth. The Minutemen are definitely the the most goody-two-shoes though, Brotherhood are probably on the other side of the spectrum. But you really can't play a completely evil character in this.

Care to elaborate?

Sure. I suppose it feels like a lot of their recent open world RPGs have been characterized by the same strengths and weaknesses. Tons of stuff to do...but wonky game mechanics. Beautiful open worlds and level design....but PS2 era character models. Immersive depth...super-buggy.

As for what I mean about streamlining the mechanics of it, and other people have said this, is that they made the choices you make building your character less meaningful because everything boils down to a gunfight at some point. In previous fallout games you'd have medicine and science and repair skills that could be used to solve problems and now those all, more or less, have been repurposed to making you better in combat.

I just couldn't get into it as much.   I liked the early parts of quests but when every Minutemen quest became save this village from Ghouls that are on the completely opposite end of the map it became frustrating.

The end of the game (I sided with the Institute) was absurdly anticlimactic.   I did not like the watered down responses either.  Outside of annoying companions I didn't find that there was nearly as much freedom to impact choice inside individual quests.

That and I honestly had a harder time killing some of the mirelurks than I did deathclaws.

So I finished Fallout 4. My copy of the game came with the now-backwards compatible Fallout 3 (great feature) so I started playing that pretty much right after. And I gotta say, while I really enjoyed the new one Fallout 3 is definitely the superior game. I think the biggest difference though is that Fallout 4 just wasn't an RPG game anymore. For whatever reason, Bethesda basically made it into an open-world action adventure game. And if you judge Fallout 4 purely as that, it's a fantastic game. But yes when you hold it up as an RPG (which I can obviously understand why you would) it has a lot of shortcomings.

I played most of Fallout 3 when it originally came up, but I was surprised to see how short the game was. I've absolutely loved playing it, but I'm very close to the ending and I'm just over 18 hours of game time. I guess the 100-hour RPGs didn't start until after this. I also haven't played very many side quests yet though so obviously that number will grow a little. I've really only done them in Megaton and Rivet City. I figured more would pop up naturally as I did the main mission but it never really brought me to very many other places. I'll definitely go exploring more once I finish the main story.

From an RPG standpoint I'd probably agree with you. There are hardly any RPG elements in Fallout 4. You get perks, you load perks, done. I'm playing Far Cry 4 right now and the mechanics are very similar, but it already feels like the superior game if you are comparing it to Fallout 4. I mean, as much as I liked Fallout 4, it was repetitive as hell. Fallout 3 had more personality going for it and there were more explicitly evil and/or moral choices you were required to make. Every choice I made in Fallout 4 felt inconsequential, there were no hard choices.

From a graphical, production, looting, customizability aspect Fallout 4 has made some great improvements (especially looting!) and while I still love Fallout 4, it's just not as interesting as it could've been.

Yeah I played 3 as evil because I've basically never played a game like that before (sorry, Megaton). Then I started to think about how I would have played 4 as evil, and really came up blank.

At one point my character went from "Very Evil" to just "Evil" and I got really bummed out. It was when I freed Fawkes. But I was only using him to get the G.E.C.K I told him to buzz off afterward! So anyway to get my karma back to where I wanted I killed a couple of BOS members in their sleep and then ate their corpses for health.

Man, what a great game.

Did you guys play Fallout 1 and Fallout 2?  When I originally got Fallout it quickly became one of my favourite games.  I really liked the second one as well.  The background story as to why you are in the post apocalyptic nightmare is just great.  I have a Windows XP vmware session on my desktop so that I can go back and play the two of them every couple of years or so.  I see that steam offers it now so I may give that a try.

I got 4 for Christmas, and I have only gotten a couple of nights to play it.  I like it so far.  I like the whole scavenging for resources aspect.  I didn't get a chance to play 3, but maybe I will pick it up on Steam and give it a try.  I have a PS4, so I unfortunately can play 3 on that.

I just finished the order 1886 and I honestly liked it. Granted I got it for 9$ but I'm not sure why it got panned. Sure it's a little short but it's a good story and the animation and setting are too notch. For under 10$ this is a great buy.

On another note I also got mlb 15 and that has to be the most complete sports game I have ever played. Just to be fair though this is the first version of any baseball I've played since baseball stars on my nes.

I may be far behind the rest of you on this but as someone who watches movies and such on my PS4 and is a bit of a pack rat when it comes to data, I recently decided to pop out the existing hard drive on it and replace it with a bigger/faster one.

Anyways, I'm not someone who's particularly good with tinkering with electronics but I'd say that if anyone else is considering the same it was a ridiculously easy process. Took me about 10 minutes and the system is working great(although re-downloading the games was a pain).

It's absurdly easy to do it.  You pop off the cover (it's the shinier black top piece), unscrewed a single screw (it has the playstation button logo on it).  Then you pop out the existing hard drive, unscrew the four screws on the side holding the hard drive in place and then remove it.  Put the new one in, put the four screws back and put it back in the slot. You screw in the playstation screw and put the black plastic piece back on.

The only thing you have to do is have a copy of the system to reinstall on a USB key.  You can download the file on this page (https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/).  It's about 900MB in size.

Also, if you are like me and still have a PS3, the 500GB hard drive is most likely bigger than what you have in your PS3 and you can swap that out and give yourself a bigger harddrive there too.  It was nice to have almost 500GB as an upgrade on the 120GB hard drive I had on my PS3.

I have a PS3 slim and it was actually surprisingly easy.
On the underside of the playstation there is a very small little panel that pops off.  There is a screw that you unscrew and then if you push the plastic piece forward it pops out.  The hard drive is right below the optical drive.  It honestly took me about the same time that it took to do the PS4.   It was also unnervingly dusty.

Size doesn't usually impact speed.  Where you get your biggest bang for buck is if you switch from a platter drive to an SSD.  If you want to get in to the terabytes, then cost wise you may have to stay with a platter drive.  If that's the case, then you want a 7200 RPM drive with SSD cache.

EDIT:  So exactly like the one that Nik posted.  The only way the one he posted would be faster is if it was a 7200 RPM drive.  However, the cache on the one he posted reduces the speed gain that you would see from the higher RPM rate.

Does anyone know of a way to fix the download speeds on their playstation?

I have Teksavvy internet and I get supposedly 25Mbps download speed and like most internet I usually seem to average around 15-20Mbps on my computer/phone.  On my PS4 though redownloading stuff after upgrading has been painful.  I'm lucky if I'm getting much over 1Mbps even though the connection speed test is suggesting I have a Download speed of 18.6Mbps on the Internet Connection test on the Playstation.

I can't speak for the PS4, but I definitely found that downloading stuff through the PSN on my PS3 was also painfully slow most of the time, while services like Netflix and such didn't suffer from the same issues.

I got a PS4 this year and was also disappointed in the download speeds from their network.  Torrents, Steam, Origin, Battle.net etc. have no problem maxing out 45 Mbps connection, PS stuff only goes at a fraction of the speed sadly it seems like Sony or someone is cheaping out on bandwidth somewhere.

For the network problem, you could try switching the DNS entries to see if that improves the speed.  Try the google dns servers:

Primary DNS:
8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS:
8.8.4.4

You may see an improvement.  I am wired, and I haven't noticed problem.

It's not out until August...but I was trying to talk myself in to it or out of it before then.  I have three kids under the age of 10.  My time is limited.  My problem with some of these games is that the require more time than I have to play.  Currently I am still playing Fallout 4, which I got at Christmas.

It's not out until August...but I was trying to talk myself in to it or out of it before then.  I have three kids under the age of 10.  My time is limited.  My problem with some of these games is that the require more time than I have to play.  Currently I am still playing Fallout 4, which I got at Christmas.

It's a small studio making what seems to be a very ambitious game. I'm not an expert but I'm personally going to wait and see if people think it's good first.

Good plan.

Kind of interesting that a lot of Pro Sports owners are getting in on Professional Video Gaming. The 76ers bought some teams and now Ted Leonsis is getting into it:

MLSE, give me a shout if you need someone for Professional Goldeneye.

Anybody here play Super Mega Baseball? Really fun baseball game. It's an arcade-y type game but the mechanics are actually very solid. Anyway it's free right now on the Xbox One if you have Games with Gold.

I've never really been interested in the prospect of watching these professional video game tournaments but I just read they're doing the world championships of Rocket League this weekend which, I have to confess, has me a little intrigued.

Stupid side question: I'm about at the storage limit for my PS4 so I have to start deleting things. Anyone know if I delete something I downloaded through the PS store if I can just download it again? Or would I need to re-purchase it?

It can always be re-downloaded at no charge.

Nope. It seems the demand vs. the supply for these is ridiculous!
I want one, but not willing to shell out multiple times what it is worth in order to get one off eBay.

Anyone pick up a Switch? I see today people are selling them on Kijije for 5-700$ and up. I guess these folks anticipate a shortage. Typical Nintendo insufficient supply for demand. The price is too rich for me, ($400 retail) especially for a system with a pretty lack lustre launch lineup. Zelda has been getting rave reviews, lots of 10's, being called a Masterpiece. Walmart in Peterborough had systems and games. I picked up a copy for the Wii-U, Zelda is all i'm really interested in playing, and the game apparently runs almost identically to the Switch version.

Haven't got into it yet, maybe tomorrow.

I've been seriously thinking about replacing the hard drive, too, and have been fighting the sense of technical intimidation to getting it done.  But everything I've heard about the process makes it sound pretty easy.  What hard drive did you go with?

So far, so good. It's definitely booting up quicker.

I picked up this hard drive for this purpose months ago, and today, the day I finally take the time to install it is also the day the brand new PS4 software update enables external USB3.0 hard drives.

Well, if my experience is anything to go by you definitely use the space you have so I'm probably going to add an external as well.

Yes, I expect I will at some point, too.  Regardless, the load time is noticeably faster with the new hard drive.  And you were right, the new hard drive installation is dead easy.

I'm not familiar with the books the games are based on and am only somewhat familiar with the games(played a little of 2, most of 3) but it'll be interesting to see what approach they take. I thought the plot in the third game wasn't terribly interesting(which may account for why I didn't finish it) but the smaller scale monster hunts were terrific. So while I'd be cautious about trying to tell a grand overarching story like they do in GoT a sort of X-Files like Monster-of-the-Week thing with some serialized elements sounds like a lot of fun.

The books themselves have little to do with the games outside of the characters and the world itself.  The books (two short story anthologies and 5 actual books...well 6 but one hasn't been translated into English yet) all take place before the events of the games and focus more on the time period before Ciri  and when Ciri is a child with Geralt and Yennifer.

If anyone is thinking of picking up Battlefront 2 but doesn't play online, DON'T. The offline modes are terrible. The campaign is decent but not enough to justify the $79.99 CAD.

It took me 5 minutes to regret buying it, and I bought the deluxe so I could play early so it was even more expensive.

Kind of a bummer to read that Telltale Games is closing. Their games aren't for everyone, and their quality was inconsistent, but at their best I thought they did some of the best storytelling in the industry.

The big issue with them as a developer was they overstretched.  They just put out the same game over and over again with a different story.  They promoted branching story lines and decision trees that matter but the games didn't deliver that.

I thin it's a developer that could have survived if they had competent managers but they got too big and reliant on an outdated model.  I'm also pretty ticked off at how they treated their employees.  No severance and there was at least one report that they hired someone a week ago who was among those laid off.

I agree entirely with the second paragraph. It really sounds like they didn't do right by their employees and that's a real bummer.

As to the first, while I agree that the similarity of their games in terms of actual gameplay might have narrowed their audience, I always saw their games as interactive animated movies that had the capacity for some really good stories to be told so the idea that it was more on the rails than it might have seemed never bothered me when the writing could reach the heights it did.

I think it's fair, but I think it also struggled when coming up against games like Detroit:Become Human.  Granted from a developer that had a significantly larger budget who were able to make those same interactive story based games that actually have significant replayability.  The decent lag between chapter releases and delays between story seasons I think drew a lot of people away from the games.  Their model also unfortunately fell prey to the "let's play" era of gaming where the lack of branching story let people watch others play the game and took away the need to buy it for themselves.

Well, the proof is certainly in the pudding that their business model wasn't working. I didn't help, I tended to wait until all the chapters were released and then buy the whole thing on sale.

So, yeah, clearly a commercial failure. I just still think an artistic success.

Yeah, if you haven't played EA games in 15 years you might be surprised at how they've morphed from a company that makes a solid product that provides years of enjoyment to soulless bloodsuckers constantly after you to spend more and more money.

Yeah I'm definitely not an online guy. I used to be when I was a lot younger but not really anymore.

I liked RDR a lot but there were aspects of the story that I remember just felt like they were doing things to elongate it. Otherwise I loved it and anything similar should be great. I want to have another game to go through as it only happens once or twice a year that I end up getting a game that I'll actually play through.

I haven't really dug deep into the reviews, but most of the ones I've seen have been either 9 or 10 out of 10's and essentially glowing. The only iffy one was Kotaku's, and they seemed to focus quite a bit on the issues surrounding Rocksteady's development of the game so I can't help but feel that influenced their review a bit.

I'll definitely play it but I might wait a month for a Black Friday sale. I just started Assassin's Creed Odyssey the other day so that'll take some time to get through first.

I've read Kotaku, IGN, Gamespot and Polygon already as well as the pieces on the game in GQ and The Guardian. Like you say, the reviews that come with a score attached are all high but a lot of that seems to be about the technical merits of the game, the quality of the game's artistic elements and the scale of it.

I guess I'm a bit put off by the questions being raised as to whether or not it's "fun" in a traditional sense.

Iím super early in RDR2 like 10% but it seems very slow, Iím sure if you just blast through the missions itíll pick up and the pace will pickup, but itís just so vast itíd fee like youíre missing out on the plethora of little side activities etc.
