Title: 2012 / 13 World Club Soccer Thread
Post by: Madferret on July 05, 2012, 02:22:53 PM
All the big leagues in Europe start up next month - with that there are some pretty big names set to move clubs. Van Persie wants out of Arsenal and Madrid / City / United are all linked to the Dutch striker.

Juve is in the midst of a firesale - Madrid bought Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson for 20 million euros, Barcelona picked up Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta for approx the same amount.

Is this Juve news from 2006?  Confused.

Might be just me but I really don't care for these club friendlies / tours with other leagues. I get why they do it but I find the football un-inspiring for lack of a better word.

Wig where you do think RVP is going to go?
Smart money says City because they can outbid everyone else if need be and they are apparently trying to ship out Dzeko and Tevez, still it's up in the air with Sir Alex apparently showing an interest too.

It would not surprise me if he winds up playing somewhere in mainland Europe either.

Yes, growing up in the city, I grew to really dislike the Orange order and those of that persuasion.

You are right in that there are morons on both sides.

However, I found that the tendency towards more institutional, right wing values led to a greater percentage of those on the blue half of the divide.

I know this is a debate that will rage on for a long time yet, it's probably best we don't get too deep into it here.

Having lived in the front lines of this divide, having been the victim of unwarranted attack and having been discriminated against based on my name and the school I went to, it's an opinion not without merit.

Nothing personal to you either John, you seem like a well informed reasonable sort.

That crowd noise was deafening.

A friend of mine was at that game last night, said he ranked it as one of his top 3 sport watching experiences of all time purely for the crowd.

With regards to the Chelsea stuff earlier, I would say you and I come from opposite sides of the divide over here. I actually find it interesting that it's actually more vitriolic in Scotland than it is here in Northern Ireland now, especially focused around the Old Firm Celtic v rangers football.

Chelsea however are just a team I find absolutely abhorrent and it seems I'm far from the only one. Their fans are utter filth from my experience. As you say as well though, there is a definite link between Chelsea and Rangers (and indeed my local team in Northern Ireland, Linfield) which seems to bring a pretty horrible element out. I'd argue that the extremes on the Celtic side are as bad.

But the problem is that it exists at all, of course.

They should be punished for the flare incident, the fans themselves should also be policing this too.

I think playing behind closed doors would be appropriate should this happen again.

UEFA are toothless though, their pathetic handling of racist incidents shows that.

Also, setting off flares vs destroying a city akin to the bombing of the Luftwaffe.

Meanwhile on this side of the pond, the Montreal Impact score a goal in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw vs Pachuca of Mexico tonight at the Big O. This leaves the teams tied 3-3 on aggregate, but the Impact advance to the semis of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League on the away goals rule. Their opponent will either be Alajuelense of Costa Rica or DC United. Alajuelense leads 5-2 after the 1st leg of that QF. 2nd leg goes tomorrow night in DC.

My team from Northern Ireland was fined 15,000 for the heinous crime of..... fans standing on a bit of ground behind one of the goals at a home European game.

So that's more than double what Celtic get fined for actual violence and crowd trouble. And they're repeat offenders.

Speaking of the Most treatment Impact's quest to win the Champions League CONCACAF title, they fell short of the mark in a 5-3 (aggregate) loss to Club America of Mexico.

Before a capacity record crowd of 63,000 plus fans at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, the Impact took the lead on an Ignacio Piatti goal.  Piatti wowed the crowd as he weaved in and around the Mexican defenders near the goal area.  But, for the rest of the way, Club America showcased why they are called a premier soccer club, as they eventually routed the Impact with successive goals.

Montreal had it's chances but failed to take advantage of Club America's weak play early on, before the Mexicans put on a show.

It was the only time that a Canadian-based MLS team came to play in a CONCACAF final.

Club America now advances to the FIFA Club World Cup, which will be comprised of winners from other FIFA could federations which includes the UEFA Champions League winner.

FIFA has officially expanded the World Cup from the traditional 32 countries to 48 -- an extra 16 countries would qualify.

Good or bad, the move will have it's benefits and it's downsides.  Not all soccer aficionados are happy about this expansion.  It will take effect for the 2026 World Cup.

More revenue, more television coverage, more soccer, more qualifications, more fans, a greater elevation of the game like never before, the World Cup is slated to get bigger and better than ever. But...

...there could also see a devaluation of the quality of the games played, too many nations, too many games, a tight schedule for players (and fans) alike, less dramatic results and less intensity onfield in terms of the types/styles of soccer played, etc.

Well, judge for yourselves:
