Leafs media man getting the spin underway ....

On to the next story!

Probably about as good as could be expected.

So you're saying, keeping Lupul and Bozak in the lineup, versus trading them for future assets and replacing them with, say, Leivo and McKegg in the lineup - has no potential impact on how/where the Leafs finish this year?

No. What I asked is if you honestly believe they'll have a serious impact on where they finish. The Leafs have been pretty bad with the two of them in the lineup.
I honestly believe it's possible that having them (Bozak/Lupul) in the lineup versus not having them could make a difference of 1 or a few draft spots. Once the deadline is past, players will relax knowing they're not going anywhere (right now, anyway), and some of those shots will start going in the net like they were earlier in the season. I'd rather not take that chance.

Tank is certainly going quite well, but I'd feel more confident going forward if we can unload at least one significant piece today - whether it be Phaneuf, Bozak, Lupul, Polak, or even Kessel. Sorry, Booth and Jokinen don't count!

Do you honestly believe that Bozak or Lupul will have a serious impact on where the Leafs finish this year?
With that kind of attitude, why trade anyone?

I know the people who carry his water will attribute this to all of the media "bashing" or teams thinking they can buy low on him but the response to Phaneuf being available is a pretty loud statement on all of that "Phaneuf is a real #1 defenseman!" stuff.
It may just be that this is the wrong time of year to try to move him. Maybe better during the summer.

If the Leafs were to retain $2 mil of Phaneuf's salary, that means Det is getting him at below market value. So the package coming back would have to be a lot better than what I'm seeing listed. Especially if we have to take on Weiss.

I don't think you can trade Kessel without knowing if the Leafs won the lottery.  That's the only reason I would wait until the off-season.  If by some miracle we won the lottery, there would be no high end talented wingers for McDavid to play with if we were to trade Kessel today.  That, along with a potential higher return, is why I would wait on Kessel until the off-season.

See, to me this is a reason TO trade Kessel before the lottery. I think with a couple of seasons of tanking, and the returns we'll get from trading the core, we'll be able to come up with a 1st line winger or two to develop alongside McDavid. Not sure I want Kessel anywhere near a developing young talent like that.

Yeah would be terrible for McDavid to develop alongside a player who has consistently produced under intense media spotlight for years.
True. Maybe he could learn some summer training techniques or how to battle for pucks in the corner and play defense from Kessel.

Yeah, not attached to any of this group. It would be nice to see Rielly develop over the years and become a key part of the resurgence. Kadri seems to want to be here and is working at his game, but I don't really see #1 center potential in him. Maybe he can get there with time. Many seem to think JVR should be part of the rebuild but I don't like what I've seen of his game during the past couple of months.

I'd guess Bozak is the most likely to be moved tomorrow, followed by Lupul. Maybe Booth. I don't see anyone really wanting Jokinen. Would like to see Phaneuf gone but figure he and Kessel are more likely to be summer deals.

I think you're really underestimating how much teams value depth down the middle going into the playoffs. The return for him isn't going to be significant or anything, but, I think the only way he's not moved is if the Leafs manage to move Bozak instead - and, even then, there's a good chance Jokinen goes, too.
I hope you're right, but I'd expect the "return" to be something along the lines of the amorphous "future considerations" (return dependent upon performance) or a 7th round pick. I'd rather see Bozak go if there is a good deal to be made. Both would be nice.

At this point I'm really skeptical we see any trades of any significance at all tomorrow.
That's what my gut is telling me as well, but none of us expected Clarkson to be moved so who knows.

Geez, why would anyone want Jokinen...

That's not what he or I said.  He felt bad for him, and I offered up a way that he could feel less bad for him.  Nobody said anything about wanting anybody.
Don't be so sensitive. My comment was just a general response to a mention of Jokinen. Not intended as commentary on what you said.
