If he does get traded, it would be one of the more interesting deals in recent years. Under a long contract, a big cap hit and outside of this year no actual issues with his performance. I'm not sure who you could compare him to.

The idea that best player differs from most valuable suggests there's a way for a player to add a lot of value to a hockey team that isn't being good at playing hockey.

It mostly just punishes great players on good teams like McDavid and the Edmonton Oile... wait...

Well, a good argument is that value can be tricky to isolate and define. So the question of how much a guy is helped by his linemates or what he contributes in terms of defense or driving play...that absolutely makes the question less cut and dried. Like I always thought it was insane that Datsyuk never won a Hart when he was scoring 90 points a year and winning the Selke.

But the idea that there's a big line between "most valuable" and "best" has never made sense to me. And certainly not in the way it tends to be used where it attaches this massive amount of value in dragging a mediocre team to 8th place as opposed to leading a pretty good team to 1st.

Tortorella has decided he wants to take a step back from the game and spend more time yelling at his family.

I'm not sure that's the toughest division either. Sure there are good teams there but also cupcakes like Buffalo and New Jersey. The Central was probably the toughest.

McDavid gets to 100 points. This might be the craziest offensive output of all time.

I missed the last thread. Who is Noesen? Where did he come from. It is rare that a guy appears in the Leafs lineup I’ve never ever heard of ...

He's a former 1st round pick(all the way back in 2011) that the Leafs acquired in the Foligno deal from San Jose. He's been a fringe NHL'er/AHLer who's bounced around a bit.

If this team can get Pearson and/or Manoah going they'll be real fun to watch.

It'll be interesting to see the MVP voting for a player who may not be the best hitter or the best pitcher but who does both extraordinarily well.

I think the issue there is ultimately going to be will he be able to pitch enough innings to make up for in value what he's being cost by DHing. Because while even being a 4 win hitter and a 2 win pitcher would be an incredible achievement, it wouldn't have him up there in the leaders of just raw value.

I could see some people wanting to vote for him because of the uniqueness of what he's doing but I think like any player unless he can get up to 7 or 8 wins he'll be a longshot for an MVP discussion.

This made me think... isn't it kind of weird that the league has the GMs basically run the league like this? I mean most of them are barely competent at their actual jobs of running NHL teams... what gives them the qualifications to decide how an entire league should be operated?

On the one hand, yes. On the other, I hate to tell you what goes on in most businesses today.

Well this is what happens when the league completely abandons its responsibility to police its players.

I'm honestly legitimately impressed by anyone who still has the capacity to be surprised at the arbitrary and capricious nature of the NHL's disciplinary process.

Lafreniere - > Team finished 18th in the league and won the lottery to pick 1st
Kakko - > Team finished 26th in the league and the lottery bumped them up to the 2nd pick
Fox - > New York native told two different teams that he wasn't signing with them because he wanted to be a Ranger

Now every successful team eventually gets a little lucky on the way but that feels pretty extreme. No other rebuild was largely based around a team getting bumped up 17 spots due to the lottery and having a pretty highly ranked 21-year old essentially pick you as a free agent.

I don't really disagree but it's not like Kakko and Lafreniere right now are contributing a huge amount either. Their eventual development is coming on top of an already decent-ish group.

One of the frustrating things about Wilson is that I think he's a legitimately good hockey player who would have a place in the league without the stupidity but, as per usual, the league and his team seem to have no interest in actually making a meaningful deterrent that would change his game.
