This one scares me a bit, Edmonton is due for a big game.
It'll be fun seeing Matthews and Tavares go head to head with Draisaitl and McDavid.
Auston Matthews said the pucks with the chip technology didn't seem to slide as well as the regular ones. He and Jason Spezza compared them and found the weight to be off, too.

The NHL announced yesterday that they'll be taken out of circulation until a new batch can be made.

We just had a change to our (AUS) anthem.
Of course the boomers were outraged, even though the tradition they are trying to re-enforce only goes back to the 80s.
"Australians all let us rejoice, For we are one and free;"
It was changed from
"Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free;"
The original was thought to disrespect the 40,000 plus year history of the indigenous people.
The change is fair enough in my mind.
Why is the nice so bad in Toronto? Richest team that has no problem spending money should have the best ice in the league.
How the....man that is some bad luck. Hold Edmonton to 1 shot more than 10 minutes into the game and that is what goes inWell when you score on your own net it doesn't help.
Another good period from the Leafs

Brodie knows how it?s donePlaying well.
They just have zero energy. It?s a very winnable game if they can find some desire.
Has anyone ever mentioned Mikheyev is awesome? 8)
Wondering why the face off was in the Leafs end there on the PP. Puck went off an Oiler stick and out of play.
Nothing is connecting for them here. They need to find a way to get something going
Ilya Mikheyev should probably be bumped up in the lineup by now, no? Vesey kinda sucks.
If they can manage a 2 on 1 against Barrie, I think we could break the goose egg.
This is boring.
But no matter what, it's a beautiful day here in the U S of A.

Ok that was a glove save, wow.Made it look better then it was. Shot it in his glove.
I thought they said the Oil had goaltending issues?Hasn't been tested yet.

Not gonna take anything away from that.Ok that was a glove save, wow.Made it look better then it was. Shot it in his glove.
Yeah, I was going to say the same. By time the puck got to matthews the goalie had suffocated the angle.
I'm looking forward to this amazing matchup of the NHL's two best players.
McDavid vs Holl.
Lets go.
Leafs don?t look good to start this period. This looks like the Leafs of last year where a team clogging the neutral zone completely messes up their playI feel it is more of the same inconsistent effort night to night.
That Marner call might be the weakest call I?ve ever seen
Hyman looking great. Not that I'm happy to see Thornton injured but...the Matthews line is immediately more effective with Hyman there.
Andersen doing his part.Yup.
Marner not very good tonight.
I felt like Matthews was doing it all on that line without support.Marner not very good tonight.
I thought he was one of the only players that showed up with a good effort.
Marner not very good tonight.Nope. On the other hand Mikheyev was fantastic. Time to move Vesey off the 2nd line. Terrible penalty calls.
The Oilers got the bounces (all 3 of their goals), the Leafs didn't (puck hits Nylander and goes wide, puck on edge Spezza shoots it wide). That's what won the game.
They look out of sorts on offense. Lots of bobbles, poor decisions and passes. Partly due, I think, to "forcing" Thornton and Vesey onto the first 2 lines. Neither belong in those positions. The Thornton issue might be solved by injury but Vesey needs to give way to Mikheyev.
At least, that's how it looks to me.

Yeah, I agree. Thornton simply can't play at the pace the marner and matthews go at. It's been obvious since game one that they're doing well in spite of Thornton, not because of him.
And vesey is fine for the 3rd line I guess. Yeah, Mikeyev is skating well, he should be with Tavares, and Hyman should be back full time on the first line.
I think JTs line could use Hyman more then Matthews' line. Either way though I want to see Mikheyev get moved up.They look out of sorts on offense. Lots of bobbles, poor decisions and passes. Leafs can put both Thornton and Robertson on LTIR but they'll have to get up to the cap before doing that. Let's see what the injury is first. They look out of sorts on offense. The kicker for me will be if Thornton is now hurt who do you replace him with...unless it is a major injury and he goes on LITR and even then he is a min league salary player. We also were already playing only 11 forwards.
So when Muzzin was carrying the puck up the ice and almost tripped that's not a penalty? I'm really getting sick of the Leafs getting the short end of the stick when it comes to calls.
The thing is this team doesn't dive or embellish calls. You would think refs want to reward that, but it's probably a better strategy to go down. If Muzzin goes down on that play they have to call a penalty.
I feel like this is the kind of game a good team finds ways to win. It shouldn't have been close enough for the bad bounces and calls against to make a difference. It could have been pretty well sewn up in the first, with the zone time they had.
Lots of zone time, lots of fancy skating and passing, but mostly kept to the outside. Not even seeing Matthews getting into the prime shooting areas very often. Not sure how much is the design of the offense/how other teams are countering, and how much is due to the lines being suboptimal due to personnel (Thornton and Vesey).I feel like this is the kind of game a good team finds ways to win. It shouldn't have been close enough for the bad bounces and calls against to make a difference. It could have been pretty well sewn up in the first, with the zone time they had.
It sure feels.like they have the same problem as they did against the BJs last year. Just can't get goals.
I don't really pay much attention to the cap but if Thornton is going to be out for a while I'd like to see Engvall. Not sure if that would work cap-wise but I think he would make the biggest impact. Maybe they could give Barabanov a shot in the top 6. He hasn't shown much but hasn't really been given much time. Brooks would probably be safe but wouldn't be much of a threat offensively.
Best move cap-wise is the Emergency Recall, but they'd have to play Friday with 17 skaters. Then they could recall Barabanov ($925k) for $0 on the cap until Thornton is back.

This would allow the Leafs to accrue on about $500k daily, for a bigger trade deadline budget. pic.twitter.com/bK9ew17Lco
I feel I'm a pretty neutral fan when it comes to Reffing but the way the Leafs are continually jobbed by the refs is so frustrating.
Matthews suggests maybe there was too much emphasis on the pre-scout, playing too safe: "We gotta play to win, not to contain two guys."

Really? He feels the need to say this to the media? Talk to the coach, not the reporters. I welcome some defensive structure to their game. We have had no success without it.Matthews suggests maybe there was too much emphasis on the pre-scout, playing too safe: "We gotta play to win, not to contain two guys."

Hopefully Coach Matthews makes some changes for the game tomorrow.
Really? He feels the need to say this to the media? Talk to the coach, not the reporters. I welcome some defensive structure to their game. We have had no success without it.
?When we go through the pre-scout, obviously we key in on those two guys,? Matthews said of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. ?They?re extremely dangerous. Two of the top two players in the world. We can?t get away from our game, (though). We?ve got to go out there and play our game and try to produce offence. We?ve got to play to win ? not play to contain two guys.
?I think we?ve got to regroup as a team, do a good job of watching video and learning from some mistakes and trying to apply some stuff to this next game because we?ve got these guys in another day here.?

Yeah, absolutely nothing wrong with what Matthews said.
