Ooof.

It never occurred to me that the team physician has so much power over the situation for any player. They can outright dismiss the outside opinion, no matter how expert, to guide the course of treatment or non-treatment.

If he does get traded, it would be one of the more interesting deals in recent years. Under a long contract, a big cap hit and outside of this year no actual issues with his performance. I'm not sure who you could compare him to.

Not only that but he is being traded by a rookie GM.  The only thing that might come close is when the Leafs traded Kessel, but he's not in the same realm of player as Eichel.

McDavid has more points in his last 15 games (38) than the leading scorers on 5 teams (ANA, DET, NAS, NJ, OTT) have all season long.

His season is just absurd:

15 points in his last 5 games (15 points in 5 games)
28 points in his last 10 games (13 points in 5 games)
38 points in his last 15 games (10 in 5 games)
42 points in his last 20 games (4 points in 5 games)
51 points in his last 25 games (9 points in 5 games)
62 points in his last 30 games (11 points in 5 games)
70 points in his last 35 games (8 points in 5 games)
75 points in his last 40 games (5 points in 5 games)
88 points in his last 45 games (13 points in 5 games)
97 points in his last 50 games (9 points in 5 games)
102 points in his last 54 games (5 points in 4 games)

Cherry picking his stats the worst 5 games stretch you can come up with is 3 points in 5 games (the 3 game domination series against the Leafs included in it).  That's 33 point pace.  That would still have him tied for the team lead on 3 teams.

Stathead isn't perfect but based on era adjusted scoring it has McDavid at 168 points.  That would be the 2nd best scoring adjusted season in NHL history (tied with Cooney Weiland in 1929-1930).  Gretzky's best 208 point season adjusts down to 166 points in 84-85.

Howie Morentz has a weird anomaly season in 1927-1928 where his 51 points in 43GP adjusts to 190 points.

(paywall) Every team's level of interest in Jack Eichel

Watch out: every time Buffalo loses a star centre because of a losing attitude, the team that traded pennies for the dollar ends up winning the Cup.

Vegas: For cap reasons we can only ice 15 skaters

Boston: We have cap space for a full team and then a back-up team

I'm not a subscriber to the Athletic but increasingly I'm of the opinion that the most valuable thing you can have on a NHL roster is guys playing way above their contract, whether that's because of a fortuitous signing or guys being on their rookie deal. Accordingly, I'm not sure if Eichel is worth 10 million a year and a huge package of the picks and prospects that are most likely to turn into those sorts of assets.

Maybe a team that already has a bunch of those guys under contract with money to burn or a team thinking short term would but beyond that I'd think long and hard about the idea that Eichel, who I think is very good, wouldn't make your team weaker in the long run.

Ask yourself this: If the Senators had to give up Josh Norris for Eichel, would you really want that to happen? Nope, me neither, and I don’t see that happening which is a big part of the reason why I don’t think there’s a fit here.

I saw this quote on twitter and originally assumed it was a joke post, so I had to search the quote on goggle to find the source.
