Leafs Rumours & Speculation / Cox: Turris to the Leafs is a possibility
« on: September 21, 2011, 06:57:04 PM »
According to Damien Cox, the Leafs have discussed the possibility of acquiring Kyle Turris from Phoenix:

Quote
Best-case scenarios, of course, have a way of evaporating. For the Leafs it’s really not at all certain whether Lombardi, still not cleared for contact, will indeed be ready for the start of the season or able to shake off his lengthy concussion history to play anything close to a full season.

If it becomes evident in the next little while he can’t, the Leafs may get very interested in the 22-year-old Turris and in a hurry.

There have been some preliminary discussions on the possibility of a deal between the Leafs and Coyotes although Kurt Overhart, Turris’ agent, may be the driving force in any chats that have taken place.

The cost? Probably Bozak who had more points (32) than Turris last year (25) but in more games and with a minus-29 to boot. Both are right-handed shooting centres and Bozak’s price tag — $1.5 millon for this season and next — would fit the Phoenix payroll more comfortably than the $3-4 million that rumours suggest Turris is seeking.

I don't typically get too caught up in media rumours, but this one is certainly interesting. If the cost really is just Bozak, then it'd be a very hard trade to turn down. I'm assuming Turris' ridiculous contracts demands have a little something to do with wanting out of the desert, so he'll likely sign for something a lot more reasonable if he was traded. But where do we put him? A Kadri-Turris-Armstrong 3rd line isn't exactly ideal, but I'd hate for that to be a reason to pass up on someone with his potential.

General NHL News & Views / Tavares re-signs in Long Island
« on: September 14, 2011, 06:37:44 PM »
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=375802

Reportedly a 6-year deal worth $33mil, so a $5.5mil cap hit.

All things considered, that's a pretty amazing deal. It's a solid rate for a potential perennial 30+ goal scorer whose the face of the franchise, and the fact that he signed this deal for that long and at that rate with the Islanders makes it even better.

General Info / Tapatalk plugin?

Before the old forums went down we had Tapatalk enabled here for a little while. I personally thought it was great, since I check the site a fair bit on my phone. Any chance we'd be able to get that back at some point?

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Grabovski interview with Puck Daddy
« on: September 02, 2011, 01:20:22 PM »
Puck Daddy just posted a rather lengthy interview with Grabovski. He talks about a number of subjects including his goals for next season, his offseason training, his time in Montreal, his next contract, Phil Kessel, and Dion Phaneuf. He also revealed that he may have sustained a minor concussion in that game where Chara nailed him twice behind the net.

Here are some highlights:

Quote
In my opinion we simply haven't had enough time to play together as one team, and not for one year but longer, like two-three years, so that the players develop chemistry, so that a foundation is created, so that lines get established and consistent. It's difficult to achieve the result when there are so many changes when it comes to players.

Quote
He [Ron Wilson] told me to carry on the way I play. He told me we should have at least two scoring lines. We continue to be one of those scoring lines. We now need another line that will support us in scoring, to be the same type of the line we were last season.

Quote
We [Grabs and Kulemin] are trying to come up with something. And not only when we skate. Even when we are not practicing we are trying to come up with different plays we could pull during the season.

Quote
He [Burke] is a man of principles and if you give it your all on the ice, if you follow the game plan, like if you have to play physical and you do, then you play. I am happy he found some qualities in me that he likes and I am playing. It's not about European or North American.

Quote
I think he [Kessel] is a leader. He is a player who has to bring the result. And sometimes unfortunately the media puts a lot of pressure on him, but he is still playing the leading role on the team. He is the player of the highest class. I think with a player like him we should get the results we are looking for this year.... But I am certain that this year will be a much better year for him than the one before.

Quote
I really like our captain Dion Phaneuf. He is the real captain I can really hear in the locker room. I really like him as a captain. That's why I will only agree to be his assistant in Toronto. I listen to him and think 'Could I be the same captain in the locker room?' I don't think I could.'

Marlies & Prospect Talk / A couple of prospects rankings
« on: August 27, 2011, 01:41:06 PM »
A couple of sites have recently ranked our top prospects in the last week or so.

First, Corey Pronman of Hockey Prospectus ranked our top-10 prospects:

1. Joe Colborne, Center
2. Jake Gardiner, Defense
3. Jesse Blacker, Defense
4. Greg McKegg, Center
5. Stuart Percy, Defense*
6. Marcel Mueller, Left Wing
7. Jerry D'Amigo, Left Wing
8. Matt Frattin, Right Wing
9. Brad Ross, Left Wing
10. Sondre Olden, Left Wing

And today HockeysFuture ranked our top-20 prospects:

1)    Nazem Kadri, C
2)    James Reimer, G
3)    Joe Colborne, C
4)    Jake Gardiner, D
5)    Keith Aulie, D
6)   Jesse Blacker, D
7)    Matt Frattin, RW
8)    Greg McKegg, LW
9)    Tyler Biggs, RW
10)    Stuart Percy, D
11)    Ben Scrivens, G
12)    Brad Ross, LW
13)    Jussi Rynnas, G
14)    Korbinian Holzer, D
15)    Jerry D'Amigo, LW
16)    Luca Caputi, LW
17)    Juraj Mikus, D
18)    Simon Gysbers, D
19)    Josh Nicholls, RW
20)    Josh Leivo, LW

It's interesting where the rankings differ. Obviously, Kadri, Aulie, and Reimer aren't considered prospects anymore at HP which explains their absence. Both Mueller and Olden cracked Corey's top-10 but didn't make it into HF's top-20. Tyler Biggs is notably absent in Corey's top-10, and explains why he isn't crazy about him as a prospect in his top-100 prospects rankings.

General NHL News & Views / Scott Hannan signs with the Flames
« on: August 13, 2011, 02:20:52 PM »
1 year deal worth $1mil, per a TSN text alert.

I'm surprised it took so long for him to find a team, and that he had to settle for such a small contact. Makes up for trading Regehr somewhat.

Devils put Colin White and Trent Hunter on waivers for the purpose of a buyout. Will give them plenty of cap space.

White's buyout cap hit will be $1-million over next two years. Hunter's will be $666,667 for the next four years.

I'm a little surprised at the decision to buyout White. He might have been a bit overpaid, but I thought he was a pretty serviceable guy.

Brian Boyle agrees to 3-year deal with Rangers.

It'll be interesting to see what the cap hit is. I would have been hesitant to give him more than a 1-year deal, but if the money makes sense why not go for longer?
