Yup:

On November 23rd, Matthews was tied with a boatload of players for 35th in the league in goals and 11 back of the league lead.

2 weeks later, he's jumped into a tie for 3rd and is now just 4 back of Draisaitl.

I knew the goals would come eventually but I really thought the slow-ish start (which was still a 33-goal pace hilariously enough) would make Rocket contention very tough.

Just run Nylander with him. Tavares can lift fast, straight line plugs.

Yeah they can't do this "rotate 4th liners with him" thing for 4 weeks. I get they're hesitant to break up Kampf-Kase but as the only other skilled righty in the line-up Kase probably needs to get up in the top-6. Maybe once Mikheyev is back shortly Keefe will feel more comfortable doing that.

This is insane.

Is that due to injury or due to badness

Yes.

Injury updates from Keefe today:

-Marner: shoulder injury, worse than previously thought, out 3-4 weeks
-Dermot: also shoulder injury, not as bad as Marner's
-Sandin: on crutches at the moment but no structural damage which is good news, out 2-3 weeks

LTIR it is I guess.

Marner on IR will create some nice cap space.

Only if he's expected to miss 10 games/24 days.

Right...well then I bet he's injured for 10/24.

Yeah if he's out another 2 weeks like Dreger speculated they could stretch that a little to make it happen. He'd be back right after the Christmas break in that case.

Yeah, so this is what it feels like for most people when herman posts a chart eh?

Steeves SZN?? I wasn't sure they'd call him up so early into his pro career.

Also Semyonov decided to dip for the KHL at the worst possible time.

Game Notes

CBJ
•Merzlikins (10-4-0, 2.72 GAA, .920 Sv%) will likely start for the Blue Jackets
•Columbus is just outside of a playoff spot at the moment, sitting 5th in their division and 3 points behind the Wild Card teams
•Jakub Voracek, who Columbus re-acquired this summer in exchange for Cam Atkinson, is enjoying beig a Blue Jacket again. He is tied for the team lead in points with 19 in 23 games (18 of them being assists)

TOR
•Campbell (13-4-2, 1.78 GAA, .942 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Toronto's line-up is a bit up in the air as they did not practice on Monday and we don't know the official status of a number of players
•Sandin and Spezza are almost certainly out after Sunday's game, Sandin with an injury and Spezza with an upcoming suspension
•Marner missed both games over the weekend after a collision with Muzzin at practice and while his injury was not considered serious it's not known yet if he'll be ready to return
•Mikheyev and Mrazek are also inching closer to returning from their stints on the LTIR, which while good news could also put the Leafs in a short-term cap crunch

Injuries

  •Joonas Korpisalo - Illness - Injured Reserve
•Dean Kukan - Wrist - Injured Reserve
•Patrik Laine - Oblique - Injured Reserve

•Ilya Mikheyev - Thumb - Injured Reserve

That sounds more like him just saying he thinks he should be called up now. I doubt it happens. With Spezza out the team can still run: Matthews line, Tavares line, Ritchie-Kampf-Kase, and then Clifford/Anderson-Engvall-Simmonds on the 4th line. Or if Mikheyev is ready to return Ritchie goes to L4.

edit: Marner injury kinda slipped my mind. If his injury is more serious than it originally seemed then maybe.

If they've essentially clinched by the next Jets game in March, I'd have the full battalion from the Marlies called up.

Kurtis Gabriel, reporting for duty.
