Game Notes

CGY
•Markstrom (13-14-2, 2.91 GAA, .901 Sv%) will likely start for the Flames
•Calgary made a couple of minor trades at/around the deadline, selling off Sam Bennett for a couple of assets and of course trading Rittich to the Leafs. It wasn't exactly a full teardown so I'm sure they still have their eyes on the playoffs, especially with Montreal's struggles. They are quite a bit behind though: 8 points back with Montreal having 3 games in hand.
•The Flames beat the Oilers in their last game but were 1-8 in their previous 9 before that

TOR
•Rittich (4-7-1, 2.90 GAA, .904 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Big Save Dave is expected to arrive in Toronto today and if all is well with him there's a chance he gets his first start in a Leafs uniform against his former team. If he goes don't be surprised if Campbell is given the night off entirely and doesn't dress
•The line-up blender was out in full force yesterday so who plays where is a bit TBD at the moment. With the trade deadline behind the team and some cap space available there's also a chance we start to see some players rotated in and out of the line-up. Or not. Also TBD

Injuries

•Frederik Andersen - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
•Riley Nash - Knee - Injured Reserve
•William Nylander - COVID Protocol - Out
•Ben Hutton - COVID Protocol - Out
•Nick Foligno - COVID Protocol - Out

Any word on when Foligno is arriving in Canada.  His quarantine doesn't start until he gets into the country and I haven't heard anything about when he is expected to arrive in Toronto.

What's to stop certain Flames players from dosing Rittich with laxatives on the flight over?

I keep forgetting we're getting an Amazon doc out of this season. They're definitely getting some good content (with hopefully a long and good ending).

So, the eternal question in this situation.  Is it smart to play the goalie against his old team because he knows the shooters? Or not, because the shooters know the goalie.

Today he's supposed to arrive. Used yesterday to get every set up. Has to be tough leaving his young family behind.

One thing to keep in mind is both Nick and his wife call Sudbury home during the off season. If not for the current numbers Ontario was putting up, I'm sure they'd be on their way back to Sudbury as well.

It's not a significant advantage, I agree. Comes into play a little more in the shootout than during actual hockey.

And its still a major hassle crossing the border, now they are making Nexus holders file ArriveCan electronic documents before you make your crossing.   I have some friends driving back from Arizona next week and they are trying to figure out where to get a Covid test on the way back to satisfy the 72 hour protocol in place.

Sabourin is playing tonight?  Seriously?  We don’t have anyone else deserving of a cup of coffee?  Spezza gets the night off and Thornton up to the second line.

I get some of this is line blenderinf biding time for the playoffs but I think Thornton should be getting a night off soon.   Too many ineffective games in a row

I'm not going to say some of the vets don't need a night off I said they should be but Thornton moved up to the second line is a joke. I like Keefe but I'm honestly starting to question some of his moves.

Oh and let's hope for a better effort than last nights gift to the toilet bowl jersey team. I actually was hoping we won last night and if we had lost one game was hoping it was tonight. Love to see the Habs miss the playoffs. On the Habs board last night and they were bragging how they lit Campbell up. He didn't have a stellar game but the team in front of him didn't show up. lit him up lol.

I get some of this is line blenderinf biding time for the playoffs but I think Thornton should be getting a night off soon.   Too many ineffective games in a row

I'm not sure I'd really read much into Spezza sitting. It's likely gonna be something all the old guys do at some point in the next month, Spez just drew the first straw. I'd agree Sabourin shouldn't be playing but as long as it's a one-off I won't get too bothered about it.

100% with you Guilt Trip. Lucic is tough as nails but can still contribute which is fine but when you take liberty on players knowing no one is going to do anything about it I'm all for instituting someone that can answer the bell.

Keefe is probably thinking the same thing. Any other reason Spezza is out tonight and Sabourin in?

So you're ok with fighting but not the staged stuff ok I understand that. Problem is and I've said it before Leafs have no-one that will deal with anyone like Lucic all season. The night Guilt Trip mentioned he had the slew foot which ended up costing us a goal and the crosscheck to the back of Matthews near the boards that could of been serious. All because Holl had a clean hit on the little baby Gaudreau. Nice to see Sabourin answer the bell. Even if he would have gotten pummelled kudos to him. Like I said reason why he was inserted tonight.

Wonderful, Sabourin hurts himself.  That shit should have gone out of the league once and for all after Boogaard.

Holy it's hockey man. They have already turned it into a semi shinny hockey league already. What next eliminate hitting? Been part of the game for 100 years. If that was for the crosscheck on Matthews good for Sabourin.

Nope.  Staged fights are BS and need to go, absolutely.  There will probably always be fisticuffs that come up during the flow of play.

So you're ok with fighting but not the staged stuff ok I understand that. Problem is and I've said it before Leafs have no-one that will deal with anyone like Lucic all season. The night Guilt Trip mentioned he had the slew foot which ended up costing us a goal and the crosscheck to the back of Matthews near the board that could of been serious. All because Holl hit the little baby Gaudreau. Nice to see Sabourin answer the bell. Even if he would have gotten pummelled kudos to him. Like I said reason why he was inserted tonight.

What did the fight accomplish.  Milan Lucic has played 1000 games and has been a tool for 1000 games.  He has fought countless times and that has not changed anything.

1) The OHL hasn’t played a single game
2) They didn’t ban hitting.  Lisa MaCleod (an idiot who shouldnt hold a cabinet position) declared they were going to ban hitting without any formal consultation to support the decision and it wasn’t a formal OHL policy

We are talking totally different sports obviously. So how about football who are more vulnerable than these guys? These sports have been like that since inception. Do I condone dirty cheap hits no. That's what the league has to come down on and hard. The hits from behind, high sticks that are questionable if intentional, crap that can end someones career. The problem is and the NHLPA are the problem. Guys get hammered with silly suspensions that don't deter them from doing it again.

Find me an example where Lucic was suspended for fighting. Unless he gouged someones eyes out , spat on him, jumped someone like Betuzzi etc or did something stupid then good luck with that. That goes for any player in the league. I don't think players have been suspended for fighting if it was mutual and nothing else transpired.

Wrong buddy. Like I said a fight mutually consented. That was not when you go at a guy and throw a puck at the guy when the other guy has his gloves on and maybe not expected it. That's not a fight.

Thornton hasn't been terrible tonight but how about giving Robertson a shot there in the 3rd? Maybe his fresh legs and creativity would have an impact there.

It's ridiculous cause there should already be a ton of penalties on Calgary. If they actually called interference they wouldn't be able to play this style.

Hey they eliminated it in the OHL this year due to Covid mind you but simply ridiculous. So you never know. Nothing surprises me in this world anymore they might decide to run with it.

No they didn't and there is no reason to think they would eliminate hitting, this unfounded fear is not a valid reason to not eliminate fighting.

Like LK said, Lisa McLeod said they were going to ban them. The OHL never added to any return to play protocols. Either way, they aren't eliminating hitting from the NHL.

I said it a few games ago, they should be under strict orders to have him take at least one shot if at all possible on each PP shift.  Everything should go through him.

A shift or two before the penalty they were dominant.  Lots of movement.  Guys shifting in and out and creating a lot of chaos.  I don’t get how they stop being able to do that 5in5.  I get that some of that is mental but coaching needs to help them get loose and the stupid set drop pass plays don’t get them set up.  Stop doing it and let them just play loose

Keefe starts those 3 every time. They are great offensively but in 3 on 3 they seem to ease up. Too easy there for the Flames. Oh well agree with LK F88k the Habs.

As soon as I saw Marner be overly aggressive on that entry I had a bad feeling... Then I think it was he who tried to pick off the Calgary player but was easily sidestepped and Gaudreau scored. Because of course. Ugh. That was a really annoying game.

Rittich seems like a very emotional goalie, so I was really hoping a big win against his former team would pump him up a lot. Too bad they couldn't finish that one off for him.

The strategic approach to 3 on 3 needs a little more attention on the defensive play/strategy to say the least, that's two in a row where Matthew's gets beat by his guy .

As good as he is, sometimes he’s just too shinny.  Like he’s playing a video game and it doesn’t really matter.

I recall people being angry when he started Tavares and Nylander against the oilers...and McDavid won the game.  Can’t win either way

Matthews needed to stay with Gaudreau there, Rielly had Giordano.
True enough but Rielly over committed to Gio and didn't stop the pass.
Still all started with a brutal decision by Marner.

This was another game where I’m just left meh with both Thornton and Simmonds.  Robertson was not really noticeable but he was playing with a non-NHL player and had minimal minutes.  Hard to show anything when you don’t get an opportunity

Yep. He had one shift in the 3rd after the 4 min PP I think, where he looked dangerous. The guy is a scorer and playmaker, he should be given some time with good linemates just to see what he can do.

Thornton was fine and a contributor to the first goal. Simmonds looks really off. Robertson looks decent but needs to get moved up the lineup. Maybe when Willy comes back he goes with them and Hyman to the third line. We'll see but I imagine Keefe will be juggling the lines with all the extras.

Boys are just mailing it in until the new arrivals join?  Why was Spezza scratched and not Thornton or Engvall or Simmonds? Sabourin?  And yeah, watch some tapes from when the PP worked. This is getting ridiculous. Let the kid have a go on the top powerplay unit.

Thank you for posting that because I totally agree. As much as Keefe seems to always start them sure they've won some for us but we've lost some because of their lackadaisical defending. Again I blame that on coaching. If you're not going to be defensively responsible then you're not going to see the ice. Bad enough Marner gave up the puck on a dumb decision oh well but get back and take your man. That was too easy for Lindholm and Gaudreau.

Fair enough...I have seen no evidence that Robertson will be given a serious opportunity higher in the lineup if everyone is healthy and available. He'll probably sit out once Willy is back, whether Foligno is here or not.

You never know still a few games left. Calgary doesn't look great but Habs have some injuries and to be honest we were horrible last night and I don't think they were much better. I'm hoping they beat them tomorrow and I wouldn't be surprised if Markstrom starts tomorrow as he wasn't overly busy tonight.

They also have four games against Vancouver.  Vancouver is going to be post-COVID and exhausted from playing constant 3 in 4 games stretches.  I don’t think they realistically have a chance but they are probably going to make things frustrating fir Montreal in terms of locking things up

I think Rielly did overplay it slightly but he's assuming that Matthews is helping him out there.  That play breaks down when both Marner and Matthews go at Gaudreau at centre ice. Can't do that in 3 on 3. You're leaving a 2 on 1 elsewhere on the ice. What's really screwed up is that the player they both attacked, ended up being the one that was wide open in front. Poor defensive play by both Marner and Matthews. Someone had to stick with Gaudreau.

Good points. I was kind of surprised Marner tried to go 1 on 3 in the first place though. Oh well, Thursday's another game.

I totally agree LK.  I love the thought of having a Thornton who takes it hard to the net but I don't think he has that in him anymore.  Instead he dishes it along the boards.  He still makes some great passes and must be tremendous in the room.  But with that huge frame you just wish for a few flashes of the past just busting through everyone.  Simmonds: I will give him more time to get bgack in the flow since he started terrific, lets hope he can return to that form.

I feel he would benefit from being back at center. Wingers are like sprinters moving in spurts. To me an older longtime center needs to roam and keep his feet moving. He’s probably in the top 3-5% of the league in height and weight. He can’t be darting around. Just to see I’d try

Galchenyuk-Matthews-Marner
Hyman-Tavares-Nylander
Foligno-Thornton-Spezza
Engvall-Kerfoot-Mikeyev

That's not a bad idea.  I also think he should get the back half of B2Bs off and every 3rd game off otherwise.  If he's to be at all valuable in the playoffs he needs to get time off before then.

I really thought we would see a little bit of that from Thornton this year...even in spurts but do far nada.
