That’s a solid deal for Tampa and should take them out of the Karlsson trade.

Would it? I mean they obviously knew Kucherov was going to sign a deal like this. I'm sure their plan to fit Karlsson in included cutting elsewhere. Between Johnson/Callahan/Coburn/Girardi/Killorn they can ditch a lot of salary still.

$9.5M seems very reasonable... state tax discount?

Assuming we do $11mil for Matthews, $8mil for Marner, and $7mil for Nylander, we'll have $37mil tied up into 4 players.

Tampa has their big-3 signed for $25.875mil right now. If you added Karlsson at say $11.125mil then they're at the same amount as us.

Like I said, I think that they have more salary-fat to cut in the middle of their line-up, but they can certainly still make that work.

Carlton, I’ve read that Tampa can trim the fat in the middle of their roster,  but isn’t part of the issue that they’ve given a lot of NMC/NTC’s to convince players to essentially take the tax haven paycut?

This protects the players against taking a haircut to stay in Tampa and then being traded to a high tax location and losing out.

Looking over their roster, their two contracts that they'll probably dump are Callahan and Killorn. Callahan has a 16-team NTC and there are already reports that the Rangers have discussed taking him. Given his history there I'd imagine he'd accept a deal there. Killorn's NTC doesn't kick in until 2020.

That's over $10mil right there. Callahan might require a sweetener to take but Killorn is a useful enough player that moving him shouldn't be difficult.

edit: my bad about Killorn, CF's info on him wasn't clear until you look at the full details. His modified NTC kicks in at 2020, but he has a full NTC before that. So moving him might be tricky.

Yeah, those two guys would be the ideal guys to move out.  And if you can't move Killorn you may get stuck not being able to move Johnson or Palat as they also both have NTC for the next few years.

They can fit Karlsson and just ice 19-20 players per night if they really need to and still be fine. Clearing out Callahan as part of the threeway trade will help.

Karlsson will only cost 6.5M for 2018-19, Callahan will cover most of that if they can move him.

To cover his raise for 2019-20.. Girardi (3.0) and Coburn (3.7) come off the books and are likely replaced by younger cheaper players.

Point will need a raise in 2019-20 and Vasilevksy the following year but by then Killorn's full NTC expires.

It will take some maneuvering and it may cost them some assets to move out contracts, but it looks doable to keep Stamkos, Hedman, Kucherov, Karlsson and McDonagh.

Moving Callahan would be enough to fit Karlsson in this season, since he has a year left at $6.5mil. Once whatever his next contract kicks in they could also make room by just having Stralman, Coburn, and Girardi all walk as free agents next July. Those 3 have a combined cap hit of $11.2mil and Tampa could definitely replace them with significantly cheaper players considering they'll have Hedman, Karlsson, and McDonagh (and possibly but I'd guess not likely Sergachev) locked in.

They'll have to make some uncomfortable decisions, and their depth will definitely take a blow. They'll be a very top heavy team - but that seems to be the way the league is trending.

I was thinking the same as you.  11 / 8 / 7 for Matthews / Marner / Nylander sounds reasonable. C'mon Dubas let's go!

their depth will definitely take a blow.

Especially if the asset cost of a Karlsson trade is high.
