AHL adding 31st team so every NHL franchise has its own affiliate [SB Nation]

The Colorado Avalanche are elevating the ECHL's Colorado Eagles to the AHL to become their new affiliate with their current AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, becoming the Blues's affiliate. The Blues don't currently have an affiliate because the Chicago Wolves signed on with the Las Vegas Knights.

So, there's going to be some shuffling. Good news is the Marlies will still be the Leafs's affiliate.  :)

So sad; she was only 60 years old.

Flyers' Voracek will donate $1000 to battle Multiple Sclerosis for every point this season.

A worthy cause. Apparently his sister has been diagnosed with the disease. My twin brother also has MS.

Non-Hockey Chatter / Windows 10
July 30, 2015, 01:05:25 PM
Has anyone upgraded yet? Any thoughts?

I have a Surface Pro 3 and upgraded it last night. I've only noticed one small glitch: when I open an app, my volume button stops functioning. I was going to wait until the first service pack came out, but I was interested. I'll hold off upgrading my two office computers for the time being while I play around with it (have to confirm full compatibility for my modeling software first).

I never had a problem with the start screen design, but I do have to say having one desktop has made me pay more attention to the apps I've downloaded. Normally I'd go straight into desktop mode so I'd forget about some of the cooler apps I had downloaded.

I haven't tried out Microsoft Edge yet, still using Google Chrome. Edge sounds like it's got potential, but is in its infancy. I don't Bing, so I'll probably give it a try.

I'm hoping the widespread adoption of Windows 10 will provide incentive for app developers to make Windows versions of their apps, which to me is one of the biggest problems.

Windows 8.1 was great for tablets and touch screens, but pretty well useless for desktops. I essentially just used it as Windows 7.

Looks like he's attempting a competitive golf career. He's here in Thunder Bay attending the Staal Foundation Open event.

Non-Hockey Chatter / Comics / Graphic Novels
November 06, 2013, 04:03:27 PM
So, I'm thinking of getting into comics. Not seriously or anything, but I'm starting to appreciate the art and would like to start somewhere. I know it's almost an impossible question to answer, but............where do I start?

I've heard about the DC new 52, so that might make it easier for me. If I do start collecting, I'd probably like to stick to one title/story, or some smaller ones (like 10 issue storys or something). The major DC and Marvel worlds are very confusing to me and seem overwhelming.

I kind of like gritty or sexy stuff, but a good story is important. Would a smaller title from Dark House or similar be a good start? Matters not an ounce to me whether something is a household name or popular or not. I'm just looking for something good.

Non-Hockey Chatter / Small Business Tools
April 20, 2013, 07:01:49 PM
Hi everybody. I'm starting my own business (sole proprietorship with no employees) and I'm looking for recommendations on software, tools, and services that would be of help to a small business owner.

Right now I'm using / playing with the following:

Asana (www.asana.com): online project/task management. A simple, free program that I really like. Great for keeping track of tasks. You can break it down into separate "workspaces", projects, tasks, and subtasks. You can invite people to individual projects. I have separate workspaces for personal, business_admin, and business_projects. There are mobile apps as well.

Podio: similar to Asana, though I haven't used it at all.

Wave Apps (www.waveapps.com): free online business accounting software. Seems easy to use and seems to offer most of what i'll need. It's pretty basic. Also has a personal financial management section, though it seems it needs a bit of work. I'm really enjoying it though. Integrates easily with credit and bank accounts (you can upload account data), has a cool receipts mobile app that allows you to snap a photo of a receipt and automatically upload it. Everything is free except payroll services, which won't apply to me yet.

Dropbox: cloud storage/synching solution. Has a good mobile app as well.

WeTransfer: though you can share individual files and folders with DropBox, I like using WeTransfer for sharing large files that I don't need to keep. I find it more reliable than Senduit.com

Vistaprint: fairly economical and expansive printing services. Good selection, often has good prices. The only annoying thing is having to go through about 10 pages of upselling before being able to process an order.

Netfirms.ca: domain registration (including .ca) and web hosting. Really good prices, especially when you get a deal. Tech and customer support is excellent and i like the availability of services such as free Weebly site builder, email services, etc.

Do you have any suggestions? Could be for marketing, networking, accounting, file storage/organization, etc. Free is nice, but not necessary.

What about small business accounting solutions? Sage 50 or Quickbooks, or alternative?

General NHL News & Views / Standings_Divisional Leaders
February 23, 2013, 11:01:13 AM
I think it's time to get rid of the advantage that divisional leaders get in the standings. As of today, the Hurricanes are in 3rd in the east by virtue of being in a crappy division. Otherwise, they wouldn't even be in the playoffs.

It either needs to be removed completely, or just limited to providing home ice advantage. though, I'd advocate for completely removing it because using it to provide home ice advantage is just as arbitrary as giving them a high seed.

Reimer with another start, Gunnarsson out again. Possible return for MacArthur and Holzer might get some action. Gunnarsson had MRIs: no damage, just needs some rest.

Jeff Skinner has five goals and 25 shots in his last five games.
Phil Kessel has zero goals and 21 shots in his last five games. He's averaging 4.5 shots/game.

Former Leafs: Ex-Files / Viktor Stalberg
January 16, 2012, 02:36:21 PM
Stalberg has been looking very good lately as a complementary piece on the Toews/Kane line lately. He's on pace for around 55 points, which would double his output from the previous season.

With his hat trick on 10-Jan, that's 5 goals in his last four games.

I liked him with Toronto and thought he'd be a good player. He's certainly got all the tools to be successful.

I think it's an interesting question. I'm not even sure who mine is, but quite possibly Lecavalier.
