Nice goodbye video. I like the guy, but it was definitely (past) time for a change.

So step 1 is completed. Step 2, hire the right coaching staff. I don't know who that is, so I won't get into that debate. Step 3, big picture decisions on the roster. Can't wait to see how things evolve. If they decide to essentially "run it back" with a new coaching staff, I'm OK with that. But would also be OK with moving Marner out. Kind of glad I don't have to make decisions like that!

Quote from: herman on May 06, 2024, 08:20:08 AMAs an advocate for moving on from Marner for what feels like many years now, it makes more sense asset-wise to let him play it out under a new system as mr grieves and Chris mentioned.

My preference is for Keefe and Marner to go. With Marner, there is risk either way. If you bring in a new coach and Marner doesn't respond well, that further devalues the asset. But if you move him now and he flourishes elsewhere, I'll always be wondering if that could have happened here with a new coach. I personally don't think so - I don't think he can handle the pressure of this market as the outside "noise" seems to get to him more than the others. At least that's how it looks based on the way he interacts with the media, what he says and the way he says it.

Of course, Marner has the NMC so all of this is moot if he decides he wants to stay and then walk away in free agency. I wonder if he would get the Tavares treatment when he comes back to play games in Toronto.
Why would he care if he was basically run out of town? He wouldn't...here's my middle finger.
I didn't say he would care, did I? Geez.

Quote from: Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate on May 05, 2024, 06:52:08 PMI think herman is too dismissive of Marner and too enamored of Nylander to be an entirely objective observer of those two but it's hard to deny that Marner had a down season and Nylander seems to be finding his best level.  His other predictions are pretty solid.

All you folks who want to dump Marner be careful what you wish for.  He's an elite talent and I'd love to see what a different coach might be able to spur him to.

I think the most likely outcome is a new coach with Marner staying for now. I've wondered for a few years whether a different coach could push the group higher. Personally don't think so, but still believe it's the most likely outcome.

The "goalie vs scoring" is really a pointless debate as it was both. If the Leafs had Swayman instead of Samsonov, they almost certainly win the series. If the Leafs had the Boston PP instead of theirs (but still had Samsonov), they almost certainly win the series.

You're the coach, dude.

I had to watch that clip as I couldn't believe he really said that. To me, that's basically the same as saying "Please Fire Me."

Quote from: TBLeafer on May 04, 2024, 11:12:17 PMHow long before Ovi got his CUP? Blowing it up and calling for blood too quickly has always been our downfall as fans. I'll stand by that, being guilty of it myself.

Core should stay. Coaching staff absolutely needs to change.

Moving one core player is hardly "blowing it up."

McMann is another one who seems to have injury problems (a la Woll). If he could stay healthy he'd be a big piece.

I liked the toughness of the defense this post season but there is little to no offensive contribution. Have to find a better balance. I don't know about Liljegren. Feel like if you give up on him he'll eventually become a stud somewhere else. But I was worried every time he was on the ice tonight.

Glad I don't have to make any decisions about this team.

Quote from: Guilt Trip on May 04, 2024, 10:53:16 PM35, 16 and 44 can go. Seen enough. Boosh was great. Keefe will be gone too. I doubt Bert is back.. Can't pay a guy 6 sheets for that.

I'd like to believe Keefe is gone but until it happens...not holding my breath. But he should be gone just on the basis of the 1 for 21 pp. They can't afford Bertuzzi, he's not worth anything near 6. I'd like to see Domi back. Marner being moved would be a dream. What was up with Rielly...worst playoff series I can remember him playing.

Quote from: Bill_Berg_is_pissed_off on May 04, 2024, 10:31:52 PMWoll has the makings, but if he can't stay healthy, he's not the guy.

Do they dare plan on him and Hildeby?  Pretty big risk, but we might see it.

This is why they need to shed salary. Get Marner off the books and you have the cap room to get a goalie and improve the defense. I mean I know it's harder than that, but they're pretty handcuffed right now capwise.

Basically it's either shed Marner or Tavares this summer (if even possible), or they have to punt another year until the JT contract runs out. Or hope like heck that Woll can stay healthy or something.

Quote from: bustaheims on May 04, 2024, 10:39:26 PMWhen you only score 12 goals in a 7 game series, you can't expect to win, regardless of goaltending. 1 for 21 on the PP. that's how you lose a winnable series.
PP was def an issue but so was Sammy. No soft goals, Leafs win the series and it doesn't go 7.

It's both. Swayman was better than Samsonov. Bruins PP was much better than the Leafs. Leafs were hampered by injuries to key players but even with that, their PP should have been a lot more effective. Same old same old.

I did like the level of physical play this year but still gotta score some goals to win.

Quote from: TBLeafer on May 04, 2024, 10:37:59 PMAh well another 3-1 comeback G7 loss against the Bruins. This is a recording.

Leafiest thing ever. At least they didn't blow a 3 goal lead this time.

Woll being so injury prone really sucks. Not sure what they are going to do in goal next year.

Quote from: herman on May 04, 2024, 10:22:04 PMWell that was a tough way to go down, but well done by the team to take it all the way.

Yeah, that was a great playoff game.

Funny thing is, the D led the way when we thought they wouldn't.

I hope they keep Edmundson.  He and McCabe and Benoit look like a solid threesome back there.

And credit to Sammy, he played a really good game.
Quote from: Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate on May 04, 2024, 10:27:06 PMTBH either one of these teams is in tough against Florida.

I think the Leafs would have given them a good run if they were healthier, including McMann who I think was a really big loss. The Bruins are going to have to really rely on their goalies because I don't think they are even close to Florida anywhere else in the lineup.

And so we go to OT. Good effort, two pretty evenly matched teams. Sure would be nice to come out on top in one of these though...
