I’m finding these numbers disturbing. The fully vaccinated make up the majority of the people in the hospitals and ICUs. I don’t know what this means but this certainly is going to give ammo to the anti vaccination crowd.

It really shouldn't be disturbing but yes, it absolutely will give the anti-vaccination crowd ammunition because they will misinterpret the data (both ignorantly and intentionally)

It's amusing because the approval of Paxlovid has caused an awful lot of non-vaccinated people with covid to start calling looking for the drug (good luck as the supply is limited).  Yet again proving that their opposition to the vaccine had nothing to do with unproven drugs and everything to do with just being assholes.

1) Unvaccinated people make up 40% of the people in hospitals and ICUs despite the fact that unvaccinated adults in Ontario are only like about 10% of the population. You're still significantly more likely to wind up in the ICU if you're unvaccinated.

2) Fully vaccinated people are still headed to the ICU now because what they're "fully vaccinated" against is version of COVID-19 from 1-2 years ago. There's enough data to suggest that two doses of the vaccine were incredibly effective against what COVID used to be, but they aren't as effective against what COVID has mutated/evolved into. The definition of what being fully vaccinated means is pretty outdated at this point. The antivax crowd is absolutely going to mock the idea of us needing more boosters and whatnot but that's just the reality we're in.

Most of the people involved in a car accident are seatbelt wearers, right? In the US 2019, "of the 22,215 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2019, 47% were not wearing seat belts."

Drives me bonkers when the unvaccinated crowd uses this as a, "See...the vaccines don't work!" retort.  I know because I know many people who are unvaccinated and say this exact thing.

Of course, they say it not having had COVID to know what it would do to them while unvaccinated.

Not that it will change their minds, but you can always show them the per capita data that shows how big the discrepancies really are:

These assholes seem happy that there is variant that the vaccine is less effective against.

So I’m hearing (not through anything official) that these truckers have a plan B if the government doesn’t relent on the vaccination requirements and are going to cutoff the supply chain across the country, with the support of US truckers. Putting aside that logistically I’m not sure how they pull this off, isn’t this getting dangerously close to terrorism?

There aren't anywhere near enough of a proportion of truckers that are part of this convoy to make that happen without getting arrested. ~90% of truckers are fully vaccinated and are happy to simply continue to do their jobs. As it has been throughout this pandemic, the "resisters" are just a vocal minority of assholes. The second they have to get out of their trucks and face any kind of authority figure, they'll back off.

That was my initial reaction as well when my buddy told me this. But he seems convinced that they have the numbers to do this.

Either way I’m annoyed at this whole situation.

I wonder whose idea this was. Maybe the organizer who compared mask mandates to Nazi Germany. Or the organizers who told local press in Thunder Bay to "go find a new country". Or maybe it was the one who told a Toronto Star reporter that traitors like him will "swing in time". Anyway I'm sure they're all good folks who are just concerned about the supply chain.

They have ~4,000 trucks or something like that. There's no way that's enough to cut off enough trade routes to accomplish anything long-term. If they even try, it will fail horribly and will be over so quickly it will make their heads spin.

Most counts have them nowhere near that: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/freedom-convoy-guinness/

The world record for truck convoys was set in Egypt of 416 trucks in 2020.  The closest count here is 113 trucks (and 246 personal vehicles).

Well, then, there’s really no way they can do any of this.
