Not super surprising (especially given that you only make a move if a better one is available) but Shanahan confirms Keefe and Dubas will be back next year.

So before the playoffs I said I could support giving them both the 86 if they didn't get out of R1.  I wasn't clamoring for it, at least not very much.

But if this happens again next year, no excuses are good enough. In fact, it'll be hair on fire time.  If they can't get over this hump and at least look like they have a shot at a Cup before Matthews' contract runs out, he will decamp.

I really wish we didn't have to play this stupid game in the media with Matthews.  He has done absolutely nothing to indicate that he will go elsewhere.  The Matthews to Arizona stuff is made entirely because of where he lives.  We have clearly seen how well that has benefitted Toronto over the last 30 years with all the young superstars leaving at the first opportunity to sign in Toronto (hint, Tavares is the only one and it's borderline to call him young).  Matthews has done nothing to suggest he's not going to stay in Toronto short of not signing an illegal 20 year contract.  He signed an extension that would potentially maximize his earnings but nothing indicates he is going elsewhere.  Make moves to make the team better and have the best chance to win, don't make moves to appease a single player, especially when they have done nothing to suggest they need appeasement.

I'm torn because Patrick Beverley is a dirty SOB on the court but his hate train on Chris Paul was pretty amusing over the last 48 hours.

Marlies & Prospect Talk / Re: Niemelä and Hirvonen singed to ELCs

Very outside shot of Hirvonen cracking the roster.   I can't see it with Niemela.  Too bad they aren't coming to North America to play.  I would really like to see the team being a little more aggressive in trying to get their prospects to North America.  Having some decent college/European prospects who haven't played for the Marlies let alone the Leafs keeps pushing developmental timelines back.

I like some of our prospect pool but it's guys drafted in the last 2-3 years who are still 2-3 years away from contributing.  Clock is ticking on that one.

Also on a side note Bunting didn't do any better than the maligned Hyman.  That was disappointing.

3 straight years where a supposed-to-be linemate of M&M went into the playoffs injured, right (Hyman -> Foligno+Hyman - > Bunting).

I'm going to give Bunting some slack for his injury. I know the team was handling injuries in a smarter way with the playoffs coming up but the first few games he didn't look to be as effective getting in on the forecheck.

Yeah I would easily move Muzzin over Brodie.  I think Muzzin is still more important to the team WHEN 100% HEALTHY but that's just not a reliable state for him.  If his playoff performance lets a team acquire him for something I think that's a good sell opportunity to free up cap space/maybe get a lesser asset.

If he came back on a discount contract I'm not against it but I'm not sure I could handle the daily Malgin vs. Marchment comments.  He's probably better off going to a bad team where he will get legitimate top 6 opportunities.

I’m going to wait until the end of the off-season to really care about evaluating all the moves but that Mrazek contract right now is a huge weight on the roster.  If you are offering a million more to a guy who can’t stay healthy I just don’t understand Dubas’ mindset.

Im absolutely not tied down to Campbell.  He was good for the team.  He wasn’t the reason we lost this year but he was also mediocre for large chunks too.  That might be injury but that still is a knock against him because he needs to be healthy to produce and he has had more than his share of injuries.  If we can upgrade there I’m fine with it but I really don’t understand the numbers

The team definitely needs another banger for the top 6.  I know they were hoping it would be Ritchie and they failed miserably but they need to find someone and if Tavares moves to the wing I have no idea how you find a Center who fits that role because Kerfoot on the second line as a Center I don’t particularly care for.

I’m thinking we saw the last of Nylander and the team is going to be worse for it.

I think Colorado wins this year.   Avs in 6

McDavid is going to go off but the Flames aren’t playing Ottinger anymore.   Flames in 6

We now return you to Tampa taking more penalties than their opponent.

Marlies & Prospect Talk / Re: 2022 Draft

Draft order changes based on the conference finals.

32. Cup Winner
31. Cup Finalist
30. Conference Final Loser
29. Conference Final Loser 2
28. Division winner if didn’t make conference finals
27. Division winner if didn’t make conference finals
26. Division winner if didn’t make conference finals
25. Division winner if didn’t make conference finals
24. Toronto

So the best case scenario for the Leafs would be for Colorado/Florida/Calgary/Carolina to all get eliminated in the 2nd round (or 1st if Dallas upsets them).

Realistically we probably draft 26/27th

I mean they lost on a penalty kill in OT.  I thought you weren’t allowed to call those.  Again, another reminder that we consistently get shit officiating

I don’t think anything can guarantee a first round win.  Jack was fine but ultimately he had an .897 SV% in the playoffs.  Goaltending didn’t lose us the series but it didn’t win it for us either.  This team did not get good goaltending for the majority of the season.  I don’t know where you go to find that.  The organizations inability to develop a goaltender has been a problem.

We need internal guys to come up and replace some people but aside from maybe Abruzzezze and Robertson I don’t see anyone else who is probably NHL ready.  I like a lot about Robertson but every time he gets called up he looks lost compared to AHL Robertson.  I’m
Worried that he really is too small for the NHL.  The difference between a. Guy like Blackwell who is tiny but is strong and able to fight through guys is really noticeable.  Maybe that’s just an age thing with him but he gets knocked around far too easily.

I will also say I would gladly give up being the A game on broadcasts if it meant we could have commentators who actually want the Leafs to win.   The difference when TSN has Ray calling our games and Sportsnets blandest is painful

I will say that there is still a tendency of this team to get pretty.  Passing up good shot opportunities trying to feed a tap in.   Kerfoot was probably the most guilty of this in the series.  So many 2 on 1s that went for absolutely nothing because the Leafs tried to force a pass
