« on: Yesterday at 07:05:05 AM »
Injuries are up in baseball by a lot but the Jays pitching woes:

Carl Edwards Jr - 60-Day DL (Oblique)
Rafael Dolis - 10-Day DL (Finger....except the team said his entire hand went numb and he couldn't feel the ball)
Julian Merryweather - 60-Day DL (Oblique)
Stephen Matz - COVID-19
AJ Cole - 60-Day DL (Neck Tightness)
Kirby Yates - 60-Day DL (Tommy John Surgery)
David Phelps - 60-Day DL (Right Lat Surgery)
Tommy Milone - 60-Day DL (Left shoulder inflammation)
Anthony Kay - 10-Day DL (Blister)
Travis Bergen - 10-Day DL (Forearm strain)
Ryan Borucki - 10-Day DL (Forearm strain)
Thomas Hatch - 60-Day DL (Elbow Impingement)
Patrick Murphy - 60-Day DL (AC Sprain)

They even got Montoyo to swear in a post-game press conference.

They are 21-26 against teams .500 or better
They are 12-16 against the AL East
They are 11-2 in Interleague play (playing Miami/Atlanta/Washington)
8.5 games back of the division
6.5 games back of the 2nd wildcard
They are one of 13 teams with a positive run differential

Springer is about to come back but they need pitching help yesterday.

General Rumours & Speculation / Re: My honest opinion for 2021-22

The Keefe criticism seems odd to me.  He's put the Leafs at 113 point pace in his two partial seasons.  He's 5-7 in the postseason with four games going to OT.  Obviously results are the deciding factor on what you do but he still hasn't had a full 82-game season with the team.

Fair or not, Keefe is tied to Dubas.  If they flop again, Shanahan and Dubas will likely get the boot, and thus so will Keefe.

Depending on how the offseason goes I'm not even sure that will be the case.  If they trade Marner this offseason and they flop...yeah I think they rebuild the front office.  If they don't I think there is still room for the "break up the top of the roster" offseason.

The problem with the big contracts isn't just about what you have to fill around them but also in judging what you do with the space if you don't sign a big contract.

Leafs 2018 - Sign John Tavares to 7/77 contract
Islanders 2018 - Sign Komarov 4/12, Hickey 4/10, Filppula 1/2.5, Acquire Matt Martin 2/5, Jan Kovar 1/2

Komarov + Hickey + Filppula + Martin + Jan Kovar= 12.5M - 75 points
John Tavares - 88 points

Obviously its not all about points but Lou didn't get a bunch of contract steals.  Uncle Leo has 2G/8P in 39 games in the postseason.  He starts 2/3 of his shifts in the offensive zone and has negative possession and goal differentials.

If you think that you are getting Nylander coming off back to back 60 point seasons for 4.9M you are crazy.

NHLPA 2020-2021 player poll:

Best Goal Scorer - Auston Matthews 1st (46.7%)
Best Shot - Auston Matthews 2nd (28.78%)
Best Stick Handler - Auston Matthews 4th (2.52%)
Best Passer - Mitch Marner 5th (5.71%)
Most Fashionable - Auston Matthews 1st (21.16%)

Should Regional Divisions carry forward - 68.2% say no
Should series-style schedule carry forward - 66.3% say yes

General Rumours & Speculation / Re: Armchair GM 2021-2022: Catharsis

If the Leafs wanted to go after one of the bigger names in free agency this summer, here's a way for them to make that possible:

1) One of Kerfoot/Dermott gets selected in the expansion draft, the other gets dealt for some kind of futures return to clear cap/roster space

2) Foligno comes back on a 1-year, $2.5mil contract. This might seem a bit low but we're also talking about a guy who's scored at a 37-point pace over his last 4 seasons and isn't getting any younger. I think he could get $3-3.5mil from someone else but he does us a solid for being a jerk and getting injured after we gave up a 1st for him.

3) Galchenyuk, Bunting, and Hutton all sign 1-year deals at $950k to fill out the roster.

At this point in time we have $8.2mil in cap space with 12 forwards signed, 7 defencemen, and 1 goalie.

So that would give the Leafs room to either a) sign Hall to a $6mil AAV deal + have $2mil to sign/acquire a goalie or b) trade Holl to clear out $2mil and go after Hamilton on a $8mil AAV + have $2mil to sign/acquire a goalie.

I like this line of thinking on Hamilton.  Can we also trade Rielly to recoup assets and then use Rielly's contract to sign Alec Martinez?

I like the idea of signing Bunting but if the move of the offseason is let Hyman walk and replace him with Bunting we aren't going to be a great team next year.

Yeah I'm at least somewhat kidding around here. I mean I definitely want the Leafs to sign him but expectations wouldn't exactly be through the roof. The good news is he of course wouldn't exactly eat into the cap space the Leafs would have been likely earmarking Hyman for (I'd guess $4.5mil-ish). With him and Kerfoot both potentially gone the Leafs actually have a decent amount of cap space to play around with.

Me too.  I really do like the idea of guys like Bunting.  It seems like he would be a guy who at worst case can play in the bottom six and be a middling player but potentially has that complementary game to play PP or top 6 as long as he's the 3rd wheel to Matthews+winger or Tavares+winger.

With rumbling that Coleman might want to go play in Dallas to be around family next year (damn I wanted him as the "Hyman replacement") I think we need to get more guys who we don't feel as bad about moving up and down the lineup.  Mikheyev playing in the top 6 is bad because he isn't a guy who can pass and he can't shoot.

Brind'Amour signs a 3-year extension in Carolina.

I know it's only one game but I don't get it, how does a team so average in the regular season play so well in the playoffs, if they keep playing the way they did last night, you never know. It would suck large, but you never know.

Hockey is the only professional sport that calls the rules completely differently in the postseason than the regular season.   Montreal benefits from being allowed to play interference style hockey in a way that they don't get to do in the regular season.

That and Carey Price is good.  He was not good in the regular season.  Montreal would have had a better record in the regular season if Price was playing with a .930 SV% in the regular season.

I'm pretty sure Spezza just signed in June before his wife changed her mind and tried to not let him play again:

I guess the North division wasn’t completely trash after all.  Montreal is primed to win Game 2 up 3-1 with under 5 left
