Wade Belak played both too. A clear comparable to Rielly.

Quote from: OldTimeHockey on June 11, 2024, 10:55:38 AMSo I'll be honest, I haven't been paying very close attention to this because I think it's about 75% noise being caused by the media's desire for blood. This has fueled the fans to call for Marner's head on a spike. He wasn't incredible in the playoffs by any means but how he's the only one being thrown under the bus(other than Keefe) is beyond me.

I'm not saying "do not trade Marner in any circumstance" but I personally think that if the team is dealing from a spot of "but what if he walks away from the team for nothing standpoint" than they're not a team that is really interested in winning a championship.

Yup, it's all the media's fault.

Also I disagree. Poor asset management has put the Leafs where they are. Walking guys to free agency has put the Leafs where they are. You need assets in order to take big swings, and the Leafs have been bleeding assets for years.

Maybe I'm missing something but who did the leafs walk to free agency that led them to 'where they are now'?

I'm guessing this is referring back to JVR and Bozak etc

Canada currently facing off (see what I did there?) against Pakistan.

I believe Willow Cricket channel is showing the game in north America so you can try and find that tp tune in if you wish.

Decent enough start from Canada, but will be a tough game.

Added interest for me - a former team mate of mine is playing in this game for Pakistan (Imad Wasim)

From The Athletic:

QuoteBlue Jays GM Ross Atkins doesn't think it makes sense to trade shortstop Bo Bichette and/or first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. because he'd much rather sign both to long-term extensions. However, if the Blue Jays can't do that by the trade deadline, they'd be foolish not to shop both. One rival executive believes a deadline trade involving either one will only happen if Atkins is replaced.

I dunno what the answer is. Maybe that last line.

They don't seem to be putting game highlights of the actual World Cup on YouTube, but here's a video of highlights from a game a few months ago that gives a hit of the essence of the game if you want to watch to compare to baseball

Quote from: Rob on June 10, 2024, 03:10:58 PMIs that that really whack version of baseball?

A much superior sport 😀 Nah, they're similar, but different. I love them both. I'd say the t20 version of cricket (basically the version where a game lasts about 2.5 hours rather than a day or 5) is actually more full of action than a baseball game. But the big similarity they have is having that kind of rhythm to them.

One of the events the Canadian cricket team actually did before the tournament was a day with the Blue Jays.

Quote from: Bill_Berg on June 10, 2024, 03:14:41 PMGood that they got one win! I don't know a lot about cricket, but I'm pretty sure India and Pakistan are both pretty good at it!

India are probably a favourite to win the tournament. Pakistan are good, but they have a tendency to be enigmatic (losing to Canada in this tournament, letting Ireland win their first ever world cup game in 2007, among others).

Canada have been a decent side at that level just below the top tier off and on for a good while and have qualified for several world cups over the years but this was their first win.

All Sports But Hockey / The Cricket Thread

Well, I did a search and we did have a thread called "The Ashes" which had covered some cricket, but we hadn't posted on it since 2015, which was during the World Cup. But there was a reason I was looking for a cricket thread and interestingly this post from that thread caught my eye:

Quote from: pmrules on April 02, 2015, 09:37:05 AMI just wish that Canada can find 11 folks that can play well enough to one day be a contender in this.

I'm sure you're all aware that there is currently a World Cup going on in the USA and West Indies in the shortest format of the game of cricket, the T20.

And just the other day Canada managed to claim their first ever win at a World Cup finals. Which I'd usually be delighted for them for... except it came at the cost of an Ireland loss 😩

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/icc-men-s-t20-world-cup-2024-1411166/canada-vs-ireland-13th-match-group-a-1415713/match-report

The USA have also defeated Pakistan which is in the same group. Which is about the equivalent of Australia beating Canada at hockey. India is the 5th team in the group and they're the absolute global behemoths of the sport.

Anyway, I know Canadians are proud of their sports teams so thought this may be of interest!

Quote from: bustaheims on June 05, 2024, 09:12:01 AMSchneider, Atkins, and Shapiro all need to go. They're responsible for the main facets of this mess - the flawed roster and the poor in-game decisions - and I don't trust them to be part of the solution.

The fact that Schneider is still here is baffling.

I think Schneider is a puppet.  I don't think this is on him...this is on Shapiro and Atkins.

I do wonder if a more "loose" manager could do more with the roster. I feel like they're too mechanical. This roster needs someone who can get them playing with a swagger and confidence.

But I think you're right that that comes down from higher than the manager.

Yeah, I'm a Jays fan. But also a baseball fan. And lately I've found myself, if given a choice of a Jays game or some other games, leaning toward leaving the other game on to see someone like Soto or Ohtani or whoever play.

Can they both lose?

10 shots in game 6 to claim the series with a 2-1 win.

I was searching for a Babcock thread to put up this latest reminder that Babcock was an utter prick, and this one actually seemed appropriate considering the content

But anyway

Quote from: Joe on May 30, 2024, 05:16:52 PMWhy is there such an urgency to get rid of Jarnkrok? 2.1 mil for what he brings seems perfectly reasonable to me. What am I missing?

For me to clear a bit of cap space fit others in plus for the reasons you state I think he has value at his price point so others would trade for him.

I'd actually prefer to keep him and trade Kampf, but I think his cap hit is too high and he's harder to move.  And Jarnkrok brings back higher picks.

I played with Cap Friendly too and this is kind of what I come up with. I've tried to pick "Treliving types" where I can. It's not perfect, but...

Knies-Matthews-Domi
Cowan-Nylander-Marner
Minten-Tavares-McMann
Holmberg-Kampf-Robertson
Dewar

Rielly-Tanev
Skjei-McCabe
Benoit-Chatfield
Webber

Woll-Brossoit

I've also replenished our draft picks trading out Reaves, the rights to Liljegren and Jarnkrok. I'd say you could get player return for Liljegren's rights but it was easier to do it this way 😃

Were left with around $500,000 in cap space based on my guesses at some of the UFA signings deals (I've gone with Domi 4 years at $3m, Skjei 5 years at $7m, Brossoit 2 years at $2m)

Quote from: herman on May 30, 2024, 12:51:32 PMI want 3 attack lines, and maybe that means one kid per line, and I'm counting Knies as a kid.

Knies-Matthews-Jarnkrok
Cowan-Nylander-Marner
Minten-Tavares-McMann
Dewar-Kampf-Holmberg
Robertson

Each top 9 centre has wingers that cover their weakness: Matthews' body on the forecheck, Nylander's absentminded defense, Tavares' speed. Each of the kids is also understudying with a veteran who matches their playstyle. Berube would also be happy with the level of forechecking ability across the board, save for the Nylander line which will be a rush-attack group.

Robertson rotates in with any of the non-Knies kids, and takes over if one goes back to junior.

I am uncertain of Minten's eligibilities (WHL vs AHL) as he is turning 20 at the beginning of July. I think he is eligible for AHL, or the WHL as one of 3 overagers?

If we shuttle off Marner, then I'd expect at least one mid-class or better forward coming back (or UFA'd) to fill that slot. If it's a centre, then obviously Nylander goes back to winging it.

Any way of bringing Domi back to slot him alongside Knies and Matthews on your top line?

Jarnkrok could be a valuable trade piece too.
