Good news is that both Kessel and Lupul look really good (the latter, especially, is skating really well and making a lot of smart plays).  The bad news is that most of the rest of the team is invisible.  Schenn, in particular, has been extremely shaky so far this season--shades of last season's Komi.

His improvement over last season at both ends of the ice is pretty remarkable, and a lot of it seems to be due, at least in part, to better conditioning.  Hopefully it's not just adreneline - I remember he tailed off a lot after a fast start a few years ago as well.  But so far he's been a really nice surprise.

That was a nice period overall.  Powerplay is still in complete disarray, but I'll be happy with that general effort anytime.  Lombardi looks really good.  Hopefully he jives with Kessel before too long.

So that was the first period eh.  Not sure it was worth the wait.

That's a pretty pitiful bunch of forwards, particularly on a team as close to the cap as we are.  Hope Reimer looks good...

I doubt he'll make it until Christmas, personally.  I don't think he has what it takes to motivate a young club.  And without Kabs on an already terrible powerplay, well...

Tim Connolly told Ron Wilson after practice that he's doubtful for Thursday.

So it begins.  I know people will say "relax" but I can't believe how injury prone this guy is.

Disappointing that he'll be out but hardly surprising.  Burke knew exactly what he was getting when he signed the guy.

I'd trade Phaneuf, Komisarek, Liles or Franson before Gunnarsson. I think he's going to be a good bang for the cap buck. I thought he played quite well in preseason - seems physically stronger to me.

Wilson pairing him with Phaneuf to start the season isn't entirely a bad thing though I have concerns that Dion could impose an Aulie preseason effect on him.

While he may prove to be a good bang for the buck, isn't it safe to say at this point that Phaneuf is a better player? I'd say Liles is too. So, while it's good to have good value on the team, in the end isn't better to simply have better players?

Unless you're suggesting the return from trading other guys will allow for better players....

Even if you want to discount the fact that Phaneuf is grossly overpaid which, in a capped league, is a big problem, there is,  I think, a good case to be made for Gunnarsson being the better player overall.  He seems more defensively sound than Phaneuf most of the time, and makes better decisions at both ends of the ice.  I'm hoping Phaneuf can build on the momentum he had at the end of last season though.

Overall, I'm not particularly optimistic about this season--probably less so than in the past few years, in fact.  I think there's a pretty decent chance they'll squeak into the playoffs, but there's still a glaring lack of top-lier talent across the line-up, along with an obvious lack of depth at forward (Grabo has flashes of brilliance but is still prone to disappearing--he's not a consistent force).  I'm not at all convinced about the defense either.  Of course, I'd like to be wrong...

Gus has been really solid.

I think so as well, considering he is playing with a very young defense in front of him. I don't know why there are so many less than encouraging comments about his game tonight. He's faced near 40 shots hasn't he?
I also thought that this young defense has done a poor job getting players out from in front of his net tonight also, he had guys in front of him on both the first goals and he had absolutely no chance on the last one.

Between the number of point-blank shots and the number of heavily screened shots he's faced, it's pretty remarkable that he's only let 3 in.

Gus has been really solid.

It's going to get pretty annoying pretty quick to hear Healy and the rest of the NHIC crew spend the entire game every Saturday night praising whoever the Leafs are playing against.  Enough.

anyone else a bit down on kadri after the commentators have spent the entire game pointing out his flaws?

This has been a pattern they've exhibited for the past few seasons.  To me it seems completely unwarranted, particularly in consideration of how Kadri's generally looked on the whole far better than many of his teammates in the preseason.  I also can't help but think that he's not being given given a fair shake by Wilson (yet again) - he has no business playing on a line with the likes of Boyce.

Haven't seen a game yet but judging from the highlights Rosehill's been working on not getting pummelled into the ground every time he fights, which is good for him.  I'd like to see him make the team as the 13th forward.  He's a lot better as an enforcer / extra energy-type guy than Orr is at this point - the latter just doesn't bring much to the table, and should probably be cut.

Side note - it's good to see that everyone stuck around after the server crash.  Tmlfans remains the best Leafs board on the net...
