Just dropped by to say that this series was about as Leafy as it gets. I genuinely didn't think it was possible for them to lose this series but I should have known better. You know things aren't going well when Marner seems to be spending the better part of each game fighting back tears in the middle of the play.

Have a good summer, everyone.

Tkachuk with the bro-iest tantrum ever. Reminded me of one of my teammates in bantam in the early aughts. Nobody liked that guy.

3
Just tuning in for the first time this year and I do not understand Thornton playing on the Matthews line. Maybe with 30 seconds left and the goalie empty, but this? Weird.

4
Freddy is what he is at this point. A below average goalie.

The more I watch the playoffs I see the Leafs need a dirty player. In the playoffs that stuff doesn't get called and even if it does get called you know there will be an even up call that will give you a PP.

A two-time 30-goal scoring 2nd line centre with a solid defensive game would be nice.

Man I miss those mitts.

Now we're left with Kerfoot and about 5 other identical stone-handed small forwards.

Pretty solid debrief - https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2020/08/10/game-5-review-columbus-blue-jackets-3-vs-toronto-maple-leafs-0/

I mostly agree.

There also seems to be a lack of maturity in the dressing room. It's easy to overstate things like "veteran presence", and so forth. But when you need old man Spezza to come out and punch heads before the guys respond and get fired up - even in an elimination game - something is wrong. They have lacked urgency all season. The previous comments from guys like Muzzin and Matthews attests to that.

Tough. Andersen gets outplayed in an elimination game for the fourth playoffs in a row (I guess this doesn't even count as playoffs?), after a pretty rotten year.

Marner and Tavares not earning their pay cheques.

Keefe with some really, really strange decisions tonight. They never looked in sync, even though they have all the star power.

The beat goes on.
I think Keefe noticed shit wasn't going so he really mixed it up. I don't agree with your JT assessment. Next to Matthews he was our best forward. Again huge disappointment with Marner and Nylander, who I think will be gone. Freddie did enough for then to win. They got shutout twice. No depth scoring killed them. Robertson was the only player not in the top 6 to score a goal. That's not good enough.

JT was fine tonight but most of the series (and season) looked relatively ordinary, which isn't good enough given how much he's paid and the amount of skill around him. He was never fast but he seemed to lose a step this year and wasn't as strong on the puck as he has been. I'm hoping it's more of an off-year thing than a past-his-prime thing.

Nylander is a little hot and cold but had a pretty great year overall. He just needs to be used correctly. Playing him on the second line with two offensive black holes in Hyman and Kapanen is maybe not the best use of his skillset.

And wow, I figured the layoff was an opportunity for Barrie to reset but he could not have been worse. Thankfully that's it for him.

Well, no matter what Matthews and Tavares have delivered the goods this series.

And Andersen.

Really?

He's been leaky. And I'm not just talking about that terrible goal.

Think they gotta drop Tavares back to the 2nd line and basically just play the top 6 as much as humanly possible.

Which is how they should have started the game. Instead we have this mish-mash, where the fourth line is getting more ice time than the third, Kapanen has more ice time than Nylander, and all kinds of crazy stuff.

I usually like Keefe's bench management but this has been bizarre.

Would help if Tavares had put one or two of those point blank chances in the net.

What the hell is Keefe doing?

We play our best game ofthe season a couple games ago, and his response is to go to a one-good-line model (and then roll all four lines)? What exactly about Kapanen's game this season suggested that he deserves a promotion to the second line in the most important game of the season? That line has been pretty disastrous. I don't really understand what's going on.

That was one of the most butchered calls of an overtime winning goal that I have ever heard. And I lived through a lot of Bob Cole years.

Nylander does basically everything better than Marner. It's interesting.

Matthews has decided to add a physical element to his game out of nowhere. He is an absolute monster now.

The Leafs had some pretty rough puck luck and the refs went back to ignoring Columbus hooks and holds. Andersen was also a little leaky - Dubois had exactly one place to shoot with his backhand on that last play and Andersen gave him way too much net. Ditto for the other two on one.

Overall, the Leafs deserved better. Our defence is a whole lot worse without Muzzin.

One of the best all-around games they've played in a long time.

Huge bummer about Muzzin. I thought he was the Leafs' best d tonight. It's never fun to watch a guy struggling to move and testing his extremities
