The hard salary cap and parity are the things I kind of see as the main problems. I get the argument for cost control and so on, but I definitely think some kind of luxury tax system, or even something like the MLS system where you can pay 1 or 2 players "outside" the salary cap would have helped.

Can you imagine if there was some way in which McDavid and Matthews could end up on the same team? Surely that sells hockey better than Arizona being "competitive"?

And at the end of the day bad teams still can be bad and choose to tank. Chicago, Columbus, Anaheim, Arizona, San Jose, Montreal etc. are not competitive at all.

Totally agree. Ep 3 was incredibly well done. I had no idea the series was going to be this good.

Check out HBO's Chernobyl too if you haven't already. HBO paired the guy behind that show (Craig Mazin) with the lead developer of the TLOU games (Neil Druckmann) to create/write this series.

One of the reasons I had sky-high expectations of this show (aside from just loving the games themselves) was having both of those guys in charge.

Couldn't agree more.   They took a decent amount of creative liberty with what went on with Chornobyl but the mini-series was fantastic.

Chernobyl is amongst my absolute favourite shows. I had no idea the main character was the son of Richard Harris, Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator.

Quote from: CarltonTheBear on January 31, 2023, 02:33:52 PMHonestly I do feel like that's kind of how deals generally go down. I think the idea that GM's go back and forth with multiple teams "shopping" deals and saying stuff like "this is what Team A is offering can you beat that" doesn't really happen.

Alan Walsh literally corroborated this.

Do they even have the cap space?

This feels both like an underpayment and a bad move for the Islanders.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I don't agree and neither does Mikheyev....taken from his twitter...

I understand there is a lot of debate about my decision to play with an ACL injury. Here are the facts: when I was injured in the preseason, I went through several tests and realized I could play without causing any more damage. That's what I wanted to do.

Twice per week, we consulted with team doctors about how things were progressing. Never did I feel pressure, never did I feel worse. It was my decision. Finally it reached a point where I wanted to be ready on time for next year.

If I continued to play, I wouldn't be ready for training camp. I appreciate everyone's concern, but I have no complaints with the way this was handled.

This guess he didn't want to lose 6 months or whatever in case the team was contending. Still, seems a bit odd to me.

Quote from: L K on January 26, 2023, 01:10:17 PMAgreed on the spending.  We can certainly do it but it needs to be done smartly.  I liked the Giordano trade last year.  It was three of those top 100 draft picks but we got Gio and Blackwell and turned around and signed Gio to an extension.

If we use a 1st round pick package to get Timo Meier we probably can't afford him next year but we could at least recoup assets trading him in the offseason as an RFA.  I'd rather see use acquire Brendan Hagel type players rather than Nick Foligno rentals.

It hasn't helped that most of our deadline deals have kind of stunk.  It hasn't helped that most of these guys haven't really pushed the needle in a forward direction.
Lawson Crouse is the guy I want the Leafs to get. Signed for 4 more years at 4.3 I think he'd be a good fit for the 2nd line.

Seems expensive for Kerfoot like production, no?

I'm on a trip in Europe atm and didn't have it in me to watch the whole game, just caught the first two and woke up wondering how we did. There was a crazy highlight on Instagram of Marner crushing it in OT. Man that was magical. Not sure what the Rags were doing but who cares.

Great play by the Rags there.
