Quote from: Wendel's Fist on January 21, 2023, 12:09:42 AMI barely come here at all and all I see is Left wing views on everything when I do.

Personally I'd rank them:

1. Ovechkin
2. Bobby Hull
3. Brendan Shanahan
4. Luc Robitaille
5. Steve Shutt/Paul Kariya

I'd advise you to click on the links that I provided again to refresh yourself on things. The Left is dying. You don't want to go with it.

Do you honestly think Trudeau and Jagmeet will ever be back? Invest in eggs and freeze them. They're better than gold under the socialist regime.

Quote from: Wendel's Fist on January 20, 2023, 11:17:34 PMBut if players opposed Trump fans, that would be the same thing as what Provorov did. According to the "right," that would mean that NHL players don't support anyone in the dressing room or anyone outside of it that supports Trump and may be bullied for it.

What's the difference?

Again, it would only be "the same thing" if you entirely detached this discussion from the fact that people are specifically basing their comments on the stance Provorov is taking. Not that he's taking a stance at all. If someone said "I like this person because they're a passionate campaigner for anti-racism" they would not, in order to be ideologically consistent, have to have equally positive views of someone who is a passionate campaigner in favour of racism.

Being a fan of Trump, or any politician, is a statement about the things you believe. And, quite reasonably, people are judged on the things they believe. Here in Canada one's political beliefs does not make someone a member of a protected class against whom discrimination is illegal. Someone's sexual orientation does in the exact same way it would for matters of race or disability(as you point out someone's sexual orientation does not necessitate ideological conformity). Now, people are free to judge someone else for their sexual orientation if they want but if they make that stance public they will be subject to public scrutiny and, perhaps, criticism for those judgements.

Matters of virtue are, of course, never "facts" but are always the products of argument and synthesis and societal norms. You are, of course, free to think Provorov's stance is virtuous just as other people are free to put forth that it isn't. But, given that you're commenting on a board where the majority of posters are Canadian(and given the demographics inherent to his being an internet message board) it really shouldn't come as a surprise that most of us are informed by our cultural norms which are that A) Provorov's stance runs contrary to what we think of as "good" and B) it is not the equivalent of someone taking a strong stance against endorsing a political figure (in large part because said political figure also supports stances that would run afoul of A).

That's fantastic but I guarantee you that there's a bunch of people who normally post on this board that are afraid to now because it isn't inclusive at all.

I barely come here at all and all I see is Left wing views on everything when I do. Don't pretend cancel culture doesn't exist. I personally couldn't care less about being cancelled but others do.

Someone dares to go right wing and they're crucified off of this board.

Just because it's what is ok for now here, doesn't mean it always will be. There was a time when this board was a lot more entertaining than 5 guys pretty much giving their views on things.

Here's a right wing transsexual....I'm a big fan...........

Maybe some of you guys should open up to more than left wing media and see what's really out there.

Quote from: Wendel's Fist on January 20, 2023, 09:44:05 PMSo if there were a Trump fan appreciation night and some players chose to sit that one out, everybody here would be up in arms about that?

Or would you be a hypocrite?

I can't speak for everyone obviously but it seems as though for most people here the issue is the specific stance Provorov took and the message therein, not that they had a problem with the concept of taking stances in general. If they judged someone differently for taking a different stance that would seem to be in keeping with the stated objection.

For sure I raised the issue of there being a general expectation that people put their personal beliefs aside in the name of professionalism but I suppose I assumed people would know I meant that within reason. I used the example of a Mormon or Muslim player not objecting to alcohol ads in a stadium but I would clearly think differently, and again I think this is pretty reasonable, if the team instead had a "Everyone on the team has to chug a six pack" night.

But if players opposed Trump fans, that would be the same thing as what Provorov did. According to the "right," that would mean that NHL players don't support anyone in the dressing room or anyone outside of it that supports Trump and may be bullied for it.

What's the difference?

In fact, Provorov's reason had more virtue and I bet there's a bunch of people reading this thinking.........you're damn right I wouldn't support that POS, with anger.

I'm Christian. If Atheist or Jewish players decided not to come out to wear a cross on their jersey during warmup, I'd respect that decision. It's just a warmup jersey. Who cares?

The last thing I would think is, kick them out of the country or fine them a billion dollars.

There's also a lot of gay people that aren't happy with the current alphabet agenda..........

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: RIP Borje Salming
November 24, 2022, 05:42:15 PM
I recorded the two games with the Borje ceremonies just because of him and the emotion then was too much. Seeing Sittler would be much harder now.

I remember being around 15 or something and going by a Toronto Sun Box. They had a huge picture on the front page of the time Salming's face was cut by a skate and he needed over 250 stitches. The guy was tough as nails.

Man, seeing these these guys go from my youth is depressing. It all goes too fast.

RIP

Quote from: LittleHockeyFan on October 07, 2022, 05:20:00 PMwell this is good news for me:

https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/longtime-toronto-maple-leafs-anthem-singer-says-it-s-time-to-step-away-1.6100973

I never cared for her version of the anthem. I know a lot of you liked her version, but I hated the way she did the last few bars.

Couldn't stand it myself. This isn't American Idol, you're just singing to a hockey crowd. No need to do a key change at the end of a national anthem just to show us how well you can sing. We get it.

On the same note, are the Leafs ever going to change that annoying Hall and Oates song every time a goal is scored?

Who decided on that and why has it been going on for like 4 years now? Hell, I've heard Start Me Up from the Stones too many times in my life but I'd prefer that every time the Leafs scored to Make My Dreams Come True. In fact, Mick Jagger immediately saying, "if you start me up, if you start me up, I'll never stop," would be a lot more effective for the whole team and fans than, "you make my dreams come true....ooo ooo ooo ooo"

try getting that out of your head.

Somehow that's not in my head but girl you know it's true is now

This actually made me laugh out loud. Way back when, I was seeing a girl that loved Milli Vanilli before they were found out and I used to tell her all the time that Blame It On The Rain and Girl You Know It's True were pretty much the same chorus line. She'd argue to the death that they were completely different.

Im surprised at how sad this has made me.

I feel the same. I guess it has to do with someone being around since the day your were born and suddenly being gone, leaving a void, whether you knew them personally or not.

You also have to respect someone who took on that much responsibility at such a young age and did it for 70 years. I wouldn't want it.

Plus, for Canadians, she's been on our money all of our lives. How weird would it be to suddenly have Charles' face on all of our coins?

Sad day.

Don't worry. It's all about how much respect you get in the handshake line anyway.

Are the Leafs the only team that has made the playoffs for five consecutive years, played the maximum number of games in the series, only to lose?  The 6 consecutive years without making it past the first round may also be a record.  I went through the playoff history of some teams, just to see what was out there. I looked at Pittsburgh, Detroit, Washington, San Jose, and they don't have that sort of record.

https://twitter.com/StatsBySTATS/status/1525662828828450821

Well it was quite the record setting year, wasn't it?

I'm not going to lie, of all the records set this year, this one may be the toughest to beat. Let's see what happens next year though.

Leafs can keep adding it to it, like Gretzky breaking his own records in the 80s

After today's press conference and the goalie situation being as clear as ever, you just know that next year is going to be something special. Definitely one for the record books.

Sad news.

My favourite number since I was a kid was and still is 22 because of him. I used to call out, "I'M BOSSY!!!" when playing street hockey and everybody would pretend to be some player.

Man, I still remember watching the Islanders win their first cup and it was an afternoon game which seems weird now.

I don't think his streak of 9 straight seasons of over 50 or 60 goals will ever be broken. Gretzky didn't even do that all in a row.

Too bad some of you here didn't get to watch him play. He really was something.

For anyone who might be interested and hasn't read it yet, he did one of those "Letter to My Younger Self" things back in 2017......

I barely come by here at all anymore and didn't even see this until now. I didn't know Kevin like others here but you couldn't help but be moved by his post in the anxiety and depression thread.

It's heartbreaking to see someone try so hard and still come up short. Life is hard period, never mind when you feel alone and it gets worse with each passing year, as people leave your life for one reason or another. Mix that in with better days long gone and it can really take a toll.

2021 has been a horrible year.

I hope Kevin's in a much better place, where anxiety and depression don't exist.

Rest In Peace

He was a Habs fan but RIP to Norm MacDonald, legit one of the comedians who made me laugh the most in this world. If you haven't seen it this clip from him on Conan back in the 90's is probably my favourite talk show guest appearance ever:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKmadR4Ye54

I've come back to this clip many times over the years and it never ceases to amaze me how quickly he came up with the best part of it. One of the few guys that consistently made me laugh.

Sad to see some of the best that ever were, going away. It's happened far too much lately.
