Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Leafs trade Colborne
September 28, 2013, 11:19:15 PM
The Leafs have traded Joe Colborne to the Calgary Flames for a 4th-round draft pick.

Colborne, 23, was originally acquired by Toronto on February 18, 2011 in a trade that sent Tomas Kaberle to Boston.

In 16 career games with the Maple Leafs, Colborne had one goal and five assists.

The "Mile High Club" is back.

..ah, what I mean is that I am in the mile high club.

..ah, wait! I mean my Yahoo team "Mile High Club", which I named for my Denver Broncos allegiance, will participate for another year.

Yeah, that's it.  ;D

After discussions with RickC and MrT's family, we have selected the MLSE foundation as the preferred charity to donate in MrT's memory. Among their activities is the funding of hockey facilities
http://mlseteamupfoundation.org/how-we-give/legacy-grants/
Canada's sport and recreation infrastructure is in a state of physical decline. Sixty-seven per cent of current facilities need to be repaired or replaced. (Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card, 2012)

Since launching in December 2009, the MLSE Foundation has revitalized 24 athletic facilities in the Greater Toronto Area, shaping the lives of kids by enabling participation in the sports we all love.

By putting in top-quality facilities, we are showing these communities that they are important to us and that their kids deserve to play on the very best.

Athletic facilities are the heart of a community. Every kid should have an athletic facility within walking distance because when kids play sports, it leads to social change.
We transform dilapidated facilities to provide kids with opportunity and to show these communities that they are important and that their kids deserve to play on the very best. A new court gives kids the shot to dream big. Kids need a place to build friendships and be active. We revitalize courts, pitches, and rinks. The kids in the communities build dreams.

They were quite taken with MrT's story and have offered to set up a memorial page that will help collect donations in MrT's memory. If you can hang on a little bit longer for that, I'll update you with a link as soon as it's ready.

Great work guys.  Thanks for looking into this!

To remember Sakura, we took donations and purchased a tree that was planted in High Park.
It was suggested that we do the same or take donations for Multiple Sclerosis. ..

Any thoughts?

I'd be happy to make a contribution.  I'm sure his family would appreciate the gesture.

Although I never had the pleasure of communicating with him personally, I always appreciated his valuable contributions to our forums.

Rest in peace, Mr T. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Although the statistical data on tough guys playing at a high level well into their 30s seems to be against him, I actually find Clarkson more of the player like Gary Roberts than Wendel Clark. Roberts kept himself in great shape, and managed to play at a high level until about age 37. After the full year lock-out and he left the Leafs, then he started to tail off badly. I hoping Clarkson fits more into the Roberts model for longevity sake.

Me too!

Great write up Rob!

Thanks!  :)

I'm not entirely sure what's to review in double-minor high sticking penalties. Maybe I'm just missing the obvious here, but it seems simple enough. If there's blood, it's an extra two. What's a replay going to determine? Whether or not it was actually the offending players stick that caught the guy in the face? I guess that makes sense. But then what? If it wasn't the offending players stick, does it get taken down to 2-minutes or is it gone completely??

Correct. For example, they want to eliminate the situations where a penalty is incorrectly assessed, when actually it was the stick of a fouled player's own teammate that did the damage.

Here's a brief write-up that I did when I covered the NHL GM meetings in March.

Get your transfer where you pay your fare. It's good for the duration of your trip, regardless of how many vehicles you take.

Rielly was named WHL Eastern Conference defenseman of the year.

Rielly has played 6 games for the Marlies so far; the first one at home was yesterday.

I was fortunate enough to cover 4 games of the seven-game tournament including yesterday's final. A lot of people shrug off the women's game but in my opinion, it is intense, passionate hockey that fans would enjoy if they gave it a chance.

Oh ya ... good post Rob. hope you don't turn into another Stracken on us. ;D

Well thanks nutman, and thanks WIGWAL.

Hey I'm not like Strachan, I do smile once in a while.  :)

I'm in favour of mandatory visors, have been ever since the Berard incident. Helmets used to be optional too, until the league mandated that player safety takes precedence over personal choice - in that regard.

General NHL News & Views / NHL GM meetings

I had the opportunity to cover the NHL general managers' meetings Wednesday an put together the following summary:

http://www.tmlfans.ca/blogs/7919-nhl-general-managers-review-tweaks

What changes would you like to see made to the game? Mandatory visors? Reduction of goalie pad size? Hybrid icing? Coach's challenge?
