Quote from: bustaheims on August 06, 2023, 06:42:00 PMI'm not sure anyone really walks away from this deal as a winner.

I still think it's a win for Pittsburgh.  They weren't adding a player of Karlsson's talent via free agency in the next year or two and with Buffalo, Detroit and Ottawa getting older/better they are in the tier of teams fighting to make the playoffs.   Getting into the playoffs and giving Crosby another chance to win games is all they are looking for now and they did it by offloading overpaid depth

Pittsburgh comes out the best, but it's hard to say it's a win. They get a $10m per year wildcard. Was last season a resurgence or just a year where everything went right? They're definitely banking on the former, but if it's the latter, it's not going to make them better. Even if it's the former, Crosby and Malkin are starting to push 40. How much do they have left in the tank? The supporting cast in Pittsburgh isn't enough to make up any real drop off there.

Crosby turned 36 today.

Yes. I'd considering that the beginning of pushing 40 for a professional athlete.

Yes, absolutely.

I don't think the issue with Murray is a strictly physical one.

Quote from: Nik on July 09, 2023, 09:33:32 AMIn the three years prior to their deals being signed Tkachuk edged Nylander in PPG by a hair (1.01 to .98) while Nylander had a better GPG (.43 to .39) and playoff record (25 points in 25 games to 12 in 18 for Tkachuk)

Combine that with cap inflation, the Florida tax situation and the fact that I think Tkachuk still had a RFA year left and I'm not sure Nylander asking for more than Tkachuk did is all that out there.

But more to the point I really think we're missing the point of what free agent asks are about if we're looking at it in the context of "Is he better than this one particular player" and not "What would he likely be offered as a free agent".

I really think sometimes we tend to lose a little bit of common sense when we talk about pro sports negotiations. If you went to your boss with a request for a raise, which of these two things would be more influential in what you asked for; arguments your boss made about how good you are at your job? Or having an actual offer from another company for the salary you want?

That's the crux of the issue.

The proposal is, Nylander isn't worth over $10m a year, let's find a sucker who thinks he is, fleece them in a trade, profit!

If Nylander makes it to FA status, you just know that some team out there is going to give him $11m+ a year.  Yes it sucks for the Leafs for another year until #91 contract expires.  You just don't find players like Nylander for zero acquisition costs.

PAY THE MAN!  Let the chips fall where they may and deal with the cap as you go.

Reunited
Liked him and Dubas traded him at the right time. Too bad Joey didn't work out.

That guy had the underpinnings of a great hockey player.  He could never seem to put it all together.
