This is just glorified +/- and WoWYs so take it with a grain of whatever seasoning you prefer.

  • Marner basically never plays without $$$ at 5v5 (waste of his skillset to set up the likes of Kerfoot/Kampf/Engvall)
  • Matthews-Nylander, Tavares-Marner gives the best overall offensive balance: the only trade off is no shutdown top-6 line, though a very good defensive LW with 34-88 could do the trick.
  • Nylander boosts eventfulness
  • Unless properly mitigated (i.e. Marner involvement), Tavares causes a lot of DZ action
  • Any Big 3 combos are negligible noise and also high-leverage situations (post PK or OZ icing plays)
  • Matthews is a beast

I don't know about this one guys...
I am not super thrilled either. I don't understand trying to win championships in Toronto (Jays and Leafs) with rookie coaches?

Yeah need more Babcocks I guess.

Meh, they'll just fire him if they need to. Wonder of Matthews had a say in it too.

Quote from: Bender on August 24, 2023, 09:13:10 AMThat's really the only saving grace here, is that if Matthews proves to be injury prone in his later years the Leafs can easily get out of it.

You're also not contractually tied into paying him top of the league money for his 31-34 seasons.

And you get him cheaper now too. An 8-year deal would be 15 mill a year.

Quote from: Highlander on August 23, 2023, 04:33:27 PMWhen does Tavares come of the books?

His and Marner's contracts end 2025, the final year overlapping with the first year of Matthews' extension.

Yeah next year is the tough year, if they sign Nylander. Then they're great for cap space.

Just saw this in my news feed. Terrible. :(

Just sign Matthews so I can enjoy the damn summer.

He was probably not 100% in the playoffs and just wanted to play.  Now he wants access to a year's worth of Leafs medical stuff, and the full 8mil, so he's willing to call it quits on this year. Then he can use the year and the Leafs medical services to prep for a comeback next year.

How long is the buyout window now.

Friedman is saying 3.55.

Starting to think the NHL didn't pay the arbitrators to work on weekends. Philipp Kurashev had a hearing with Chicago the day before Sammy's and he hasn't had an award announced yet either.

Well I guess I'll give that refresh button a rest then.

The hearing is probably over, they have 48 hours to come to a decision.

Well I guess hitting refresh every five minutes for the last 8 hours was a waste of time. Sheesh.
