All Sports But Hockey / The Cricket Thread
June 10, 2024, 02:42:40 PM
Well, I did a search and we did have a thread called "The Ashes" which had covered some cricket, but we hadn't posted on it since 2015, which was during the World Cup. But there was a reason I was looking for a cricket thread and interestingly this post from that thread caught my eye:

Quote from: pmrules on April 02, 2015, 09:37:05 AMI just wish that Canada can find 11 folks that can play well enough to one day be a contender in this.

I'm sure you're all aware that there is currently a World Cup going on in the USA and West Indies in the shortest format of the game of cricket, the T20.

And just the other day Canada managed to claim their first ever win at a World Cup finals. Which I'd usually be delighted for them for... except it came at the cost of an Ireland loss 😩

The USA have also defeated Pakistan which is in the same group. Which is about the equivalent of Australia beating Canada at hockey. India is the 5th team in the group and they're the absolute global behemoths of the sport.

Anyway, I know Canadians are proud of their sports teams so thought this may be of interest!

Well, may as well start the build towards the new season with the big news...

Ohtani believed to have met with Jays officials at Dunedin.

Not sure it really means anything, but who knows...
General NHL News & Views / NHL Expansion

As it says on the tin: general expansion rumours and rumblings

San Diego, Atlanta, Houston and Quebec discussed in this article. Also Salt Lake City gets some love.

Fun to speculate, at least.
Quote from: herman on June 01, 2023, 09:33:17 AMDubas is president!

Not going to be GM elsewhere, so...

fun how they squeezed this out juuuuust before the Leafs' new GM is gearing up to speak.

There's your Matthews destination. Couple of seasons left of Crosby, Matthews over there next season to take over the mantle.
So, keep or move on?

I'm 100% for retaining him. But as Kloke says, he probably needs to continue to evolve and be a bit more cut throat, likely starting with replacing Keefe and moving players he maybe didn't want to

Looking very much like her reign is due to end imminently.

All her children and grandchildren have been summoned to Balmoral where she has been staying.

Her Drs have released a statement suggesting they are very "concerned" about her health.

The BBC has interrupted and suspended all normal programming on BBC1 and the presenters are now sporting black ties.

I suspect the announcement is imminent.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / All or Nothing
October 01, 2021, 07:20:15 AM
So the show has appeared on Prime today. After much internal debate, I finally relented and watched the first episode on my lunch break and certainly it's an interesting insight. Some good behind the scenes practice stuff, lots and lots of swearing, a little spat between Keefe and Matthews.

Dubas is a Man City fan.

I enjoyed it and looking forward to episodes 2,3 and 4. Might skip episode 5 though  :D

Perfect aperitif before my first live game of hockey since January 2020 this evening!

Phenomenal US Open final between 18 year old Briton Emma Raducanu and Canadian 19 year old Leylah Fernandez.

Radicanu, the first qualifier to ever win a grand slam, but I think there's some seeds of a long term rivalry there....

Fernandez made Raducanu win it, barely put a foot wrong.

All Sports But Hockey / Formula 1 Incident
November 29, 2020, 02:16:51 PM
One of the most incredible crashes I have seen in years today in Bahrain. Romain Grosjean clipped a rear wheel on another car and careered across the track hitting a metal barrier straight on. His car split in two and erupted into flames instantly. He walked away from the incident and it looks like some burns to his hands and a couple of broken ribs.

The videos and photos are both incredible and terrifying. The safety standards that have allowed him to walk away from this deserve credit.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / The TML 2010s All Decade Team
November 28, 2019, 06:19:36 PM
Since were getting on towards the end of another decade, The Athletic have been doing a load of retrospectives. One of them is their Leafs team of the decade.

It's been a tough enough decade to be a fan with a few false dawns but it's kind of fun to look back at some names that have played here. Here's the athletics team if anyone wants to have a go at making one of their own or tweaking this one

JVR – Matthews – Kessel
MacArthur – Tavares – Marner
Lupul – Kadri – Nylander
Hyman – Bozak – Kulemin

Extra: Grabovski

Gardiner – Rielly
Muzzin – Phaneuf
Kaberle – Hainsey

Extras: Gunnarsson, Franson

For the record, the "nightmare" team

McLaren – Smithson – Orr
J. Blake – Jokinen – Clarkson
Sill – Wallin – Crabb
Rosehill – Dupuis – Hanson

Exelby – Finger
Lebda – Komisarek
Aulie – Holzer

So this is kind of following on from Rick's post over on the main forum about Leafs/hockey podcasts.

Are there any podcasts of any genre that you've listened to and would recommend? Share them here!

There's a couple that I really enjoy.

1 - BBC Radio Five Live Kermode and Mayo's Film Review - this is a weekly show on BBC Radio reviewing movies, it cocvers the UK top 10, that week's new releases, DVD releases etc. Obviously it is UK based so the release dates may not match up, but it's a fantastic listen with 2 really good broadcasters who have created a show that you could probably listen to even if you weren't a movie watcher. The quality of guest and the quality of the interviews with those guests is a different level also.

2 - The Teacher's Pet - this is one of those "true crime" things that seem to be very popular at the minute. Focuses on an Australian rugby league star/school teacher, his disappeared wife and his school girl that he taught mistress from the early 1980s.

3 - Nike Trained - I found this one lately as the episode that caught my attention was with 3 time Crossfit Games champion Mat Fraser. However as a bit of a fitness geek I found the other interviews to range from interesting to making me quite... incredulous. Obviously it's a bit product placement-y but all the interviews are well done and range from topics on things like nutrition to sleep to trying to break records (an episode by the scientist who ran the attempt to run a sub 2 hour marathon) and even mindfulness.

3 years at $5m in St Louis being reported.

I liked him, basically a "free" signing. Never really let anyone down and put in the heart and effort.

But right not to pay him that.

All Sports But Hockey / World Cup Russia 2018
June 13, 2018, 05:27:18 AM
Starts tomorrow so where's your money?

Spain sack their coach the day before the tournament so that either destroys their chances or maybe galvanises the side.

Germany always likely to be there or thereabouts.

Brazil needing to bounce back after their embarrassment at their home world cup last time round.

England to be hyped by the English press irritating the rest of the UK into hating them even more and supporting Panama/Tunisia/Begium

Also: Keep an eye out for the Croatia v Nigeria game for the clash of the greatest football kits of the tournament

Just since I can't think of anywhere else to put this, a thread for people who maybe follow Euro hockey, including our overseas members like myself.

Anyway in the top UK Elite League this incident happened on Sunday. Apparently worth a one game ban. Feel free to discuss.

(Leafs link, Belfast coach is Sheldon Keefe's brother, Adam)

In other news the player on the end of the attack was banned 3 games for kicking

Haven't actually sat and watched one of these in a while and I don't recall there being a time limit before, but that timer is making some quite entertaining matchups.

Judge v Bour was a great contest. And some of these guys hit the ball really, really hard.

Happy New Year to all at TML Fans.

Hopefully the year brings only good to everyone!
(Sorry for kind of plagiarising the Thread title from the Phaneuf thread)

Just read this piece by Mirtle in the Globe and Mail

Obviously we've known that Reimer contract is up this year while Bernier still has term left.

There were some interesting stats also came up on. The general gist is that Reimer outperforms Bernier in the analytics.

In the "red zone" (basically the slot right out in front of the crease to between the hash marks where around 50% of goals in the NHL are scored from) Reimer ranks 2nd in the NHL for save percentage on shots from here (83.5%) while Bernier is significantly below league average with 66.3%. League average is 75.5%.

So, do you trade Reimer as his contract is ending, and value probably particularly high. Or do you try and work out a way to trade Bernier?

Or do you just keep both? Who, if anyone, is likely available in free agency that would be a better bet?
