Former Leafs: Ex-Files / Re: Zach Hyman

The guy he played with last year is no slouch either...

I love me some AM34 but the gap between McDavid and the #2 player in the league, whoever that is, right now is probably bigger than the 1-2 gap in any other sport and by a fair margin.

Well. No matter how you phrase it, a ‘plan’ was made to allocate funds in the places best determined for success . So the plan may not have directly been laid out to rid the team of Hyman, there certainly was a plan that resulted in that outcome.

Sure but within that context just saying the Leafs are worse without Hyman is largely meaningless because, obviously, when cap constraints force a team to lose a good player, they'll get worse. You need to make the case that the team would be better with Hyman but without the players they would need to lose to make up the cap difference for. But even then, you also have to make the case that signing Hyman at the cap hit the Oilers gave him wasn't just a net positive but that signing him to 7 years at that price would be a wise decision.

We all liked Zach and would have loved to have kept him around but I don't think you can argue with the point that he just priced himself out of Toronto.

I watched some of the Oilers game last night and I agree that Edmonton looks a lot better. They look like they have the depth they need and secondary scoring to boot. That said, it was against Phoenix so...?

And the "plan" to rid ourselves of Hyman was just the reality of the salary cap.

In fairness to Barnes he has had three fouls called on him that have been the Wizards player jumping into him which isn’t supposed to be a defensive foul anymore.  The officiating has been pretty bad against a team that is doing more than it’s share of beating themselves by not being able to shoot

That's not really Barnes specific. Barnes would have been an interesting pick if the team didn't have OG and Pascal and Boucher and Precious and so forth.

I think I was right there with you about Suggs.   The Raptors are too much of the same.  They are only going to be dangerous if they play all aggressive basketball and that's not a winning style of basketball because it is too draining.

Yeah, it just feels like there's a serious lack of guys who are good basketball players on this team. The Suggs/Barnes thing exacerbated that but that's sort of been growing a while. Not having Kyle around is just flashing that in big neon lights. Even if OG/Siakam/Barnes become really good spot up shooters, who gets them the ball? Who draws in their defenders on penetration?

It's one game I know so I shouldn't over react but when you've been thinking something all summer and then see it play out just as you thought, it's hard not to.

The effort is bad tonight but the offense is going to struggle

Pfft. Offense. Who needs it. Give me nothing but guys who are 6'8 with long reaches and who aren't very good at shooting, dribbling or creating. What could go wrong?

Well, they're back and, uh, they might not be great. Either way, this is the place to talk about this year's Raptors and, by mid-year, post Chet Holmgren highlight videos.

The schedule is stupid.

Edmonton plays 8 back to backs this year.  The Islanders have 19!  Meanwhile the Islanders have two weeks out of the first 5 weeks of the schedule with only 1 game.

Leafs are bottom half of the league with 13 back to backs but not all back-to-backs are the same.  The Leafs first two are back-to-backs against a rested team with the Leafs having to travel.  The schedule is stupid this year.  They can say compressed schedule due to the late start/Olympics but the discrepancy in back-to-backs and large gaps in schedule are just a poorly designed schedule

Nothing is ideal but it sure can't be easy trying to figure out 1300+ games and working around other events at the arenas, travelling, then take away 2 or 3 weeks in time during the season also...must be a nightmare.

Especially when you figure that for a lot of the US based arenas the hockey team isn't exactly a huge priority.

I can only speak for myself but I would not go to any sporting event or concert right now.

I feel the same way so it seems interesting that in the context of a market where it's often said that the Leafs could sell 10 or even 20 thousand more tickets a night if they had capacity that so many people are turned off from going to events that it's leading to empty seats.

Assuming, of course, that it is the Pandemic causing it and not the sense I get that the fanbase is at a pretty low point right now.

But even that feels interesting if the pandemic is the reason that the Leafs aren't selling tickets they normally would.

So the leafs drawing at 96% capacity during an ongoing pandemic deserves an entire article but Ottawa drawing under 9k is no big deal.

In all honesty, I personally wouldn’t be attending any live events, and I’m sure there are a lot more like me. But drawing at 96%? I would assume this would be too 5 in the league.

Edit: top 10 I just looked it up:

I mean, kinda? The Leafs not selling out does feel like news while the Senators being a clown show is pretty old hat at this point.

But those are the fillers I want. Those are the strong 3rd and 4th liners on a team. They maintain posession until the top lines get back on the ice. It keeps the momentum going in the right direction. Yes they need to bang some ugly ones home once and a while to even out the scoring a little, but 80% of the scoring is ultimately going to come from the guys getting 20-24 minutes a night.

I think the better teams will have some guys who can do both and, to boot, some young guys with talent blocked in the line-up and in the bottom 6 by necessity rather than skillset.

13
Personally I disagree. I feel this is a timing and familiarity issue. We’re only 4 games into the season and we’ve seen this for years and years and years. Some games you throw everything you have at the goalie and you get stoned and then another game you have 4 goals on 20 shots. It’ll even out.

Maybe but as the cap squeeze forces the team to cut back on talent I can't help but think that when someone like Dubas has to choose among the end of roster fillers he's going to favour a guy who will have good possession numbers which lead to lots of shots while not being the kind of guy who can actually capitalize on those chances.

I appreciate the way we tend to think of these things but at some point don't you have to question whether or not this team was, at least in part, built to be a team that frequently outshoots their opponent without necessarily having the skill to have a ton to show for it?

That Rangers line-up is pretty top heavy.
