This almost feels like a replacement move for losing Schenn. Except Schenn is a d-man.

Quote from: Deebo on June 30, 2023, 12:13:41 PMThere is virtually no way the team will stay as it currently sits.

Seriously. The offseason has really barely just started. Free agency hasn't even opened yet. Lots can - and will - still happen.

They aren't going into the season with over 10M in cap room, with Muzzin on LTIR.

I completely understand there are still gonna be changes here. My concern is based more on the approach. Are we going to shake up the core a little and try to evenly dispense the cap room between the forward group and the defence, or are we just happy to plug and play with some of the slots still available?

Management in my opinion and from what we are reading seem bent on running the same  core and it will be the same plug and play to fill out the roster which in my opinion is a mistake. If some of the numbers being bantered around are true we are just rinsing and repeat what has plagued us the last couple years. Our D needs improving and a more balanced team in my opinion. If these guys aren't willing to take a bit less then make some changes. Seeing what others are signing for it seems like we always overpay. That needs to end. If these guys could figure out what it takes to win in the playoffs and show up and produce then fine but that hasn't been the case so why do we need to give them significant bumps in salary?

I don't disagree. Let's see what Treliving does in the next little while here. I'm hoping for some new players that provide a little different approach to team play. I'm just not counting on it.

Quote from: azzurri63 on June 30, 2023, 11:31:45 AMSounds like Nylander's negotiations aren't going well. Ship his as* to Arizona and scoop Keller who wants out and you have some extra cash to spend. Change the complexion of this team it's definitely needed.

I agree about changing the complexion of this team.

If we're running back most of the same players, minus key players like O'Reilly and Bunting, we're likely regressing.

Are we all happy with the mindset... if you make it to the playoffs anything can happen? Because this team (at best) looks to repeat last years regular and post season performances as it currently sits.

At some point in order to win it all, I think you just have to make a substantial trade that probably most people won't like at first sight. They probably won't like the player you're giving up to make it happen. They'll probably bring up all the negatives instead of the positives of said player and how much he brings to the equation. But the alternative is to keep turning over the roster in small increments that don't move the needle over the line or alter the chances of improvement enough. I'm not saying Karlsson is the answer, and I don't think he'd fit under the cap anyways. But to see what both Vegas and Florida did to position themselves to get to the final is pretty inspiring, and the Leafs should take notice of what it took to get there.

Quote from: Kaberle15 on June 28, 2023, 10:45:14 AMWould anyone flip Nylander for Karlsson at 50% straight up ?

Absolutely I would. They need to take some risk on if they want to get past that final hurdle.

A little too pricey but I like the signing!

lol this is so stupid.

I'd sit at the Flames table until they made their pick, talking up how good Mitch Marner is and how much he reminds me of a younger Johnny Gaudreau.

I'm really interested in reading your tell all book on the ways that Mitch Marner has wronged you in life.

There must be 50 Ways To Trade a Marner.

Quote from: RedLeaf on June 24, 2023, 05:52:07 PMI get the implication, just posting the stats for games 5, 6, 7 but it's kind of a small sample size to base any quality assessment of who the best players are/is.

You're removing all of the 82 game seasons games plus more than half of all the playoff games.

I mean I guess it makes a point but not a particularly strong one .

The point is who shows up under pressure. I would argue we've seen a lot thus far showing Marner is generally not able to handle pressure when it's on thus far.

I'd say thats a pretty consistent theme among all four of the so called core-4 players. Take any one of them and surround them with players who thrive under pressure and they will all look better. The problem appears to be more about them as a group and not so much as individuals. That's my take anyways.

Did you see post #2 on this thread?

Ok.
I'm not a fan of giving up the best player in a trade.

Or one the best playmakers in the league.

I'd first try and see what a return would look like on Nylander before I'd even remotely consider moving Marner. For most of this season and many stretches of previous seasons, he's been our best overall player. Trade him? No thanks.

And if Nylander is the best player in the trade?

Is this question for me or Bulldog?

Personally, I'd have no problem losing Nylander even he was the best player in the trade if it was a return that balanced out the team better. I'm just not prepared to give up our best player to do it.
