Maybe the end of the goat?

Maybe they have to move him, with Kapenen to move all his salary plus free up cap. They could get back a cheaper defenceman plus a 2nd rounder if they move both of them.

I,m wondering if the Leafs have to part with some major pieces.I can,t see this working out to a serious cup contender as it appears right now.

For example if Marner gets a big offer from another club.Maybe they have to get their 4 first rounders and move on.Use that room to get some defence and a cheaper wingers.  Without him they would still have their 3 main centers to build the team around.

How about if one of the teams doing the offer-sheeting happens to be this one:

https://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/hockey-inside-out/hickey-on-hockey-5

That would be something if it was Montreal. There could be a sleeper team or two that might give a big offer.  The deal with Marner needs to be done sooner than later  to bring some clarity in this off season.

He has so much skill but bobbled the puck a couple of times on the playoffs so bye.

Trade ideas I have in mind:
Roman Polak: RHD, our coach trusts him, hits and stuff, is a man
Erik Gudbranson: RHD, coaches love him, hits and stuff, is a man

You did start a thread on him.  Good stuff.

Can you guys start a new thread for your Nylander trade ideas?
I,m sorry I hurt your feelings on Nylander.   If you want to start a new thread on him ,go ahead.
One lost game and we're attacking each other. Seems normal.
That,s a bit strong"attacking each other"  I respect every ones post.May not agree but still respect. Other wise what's the point in having a discussion.

Really need to think about trading Nylander in the offseason.  He isn't an xfactor.   Unless people think he will rebound next season.
Selling low is not a good idea.

This is a good point.   I guess you could look at the acquired cap space as the win in the trade.

Just. Stop.

I've tried to be as tolerant as possible, but this is just absolute garbage.

Because he's not worth anywhere near what they signed him for?
Sorry Mikey 29, you are just plain wrong.  Nylander is going to prove a steal over and over.  And he is not going anywhere so get used to him, Dubas promised him no trade and Dubas has to be a man of his word.
The thing is all these forwards are what 21, 22?  Once we have a very nice D in 3 years and these guys are a seasoned 25-26...just imagine, a not a decent D but a dynamic D.  Its coming.
I thought Muzzin had a terrible game, responsible for the first 2 goals.
Nylander will be traded in the summer for a RHD and cap space. Book it.
Do you think that Dubas can unload Nylander who is playing at half of what his cap hit is worth. This was a stupid signing and I wanted them to trade him rather than sign him and I mentioned that a couple of times on the board. He single handed  cooled the whole team when he came back. He will not be an easy dump after the season unless he gets serious about playing in these playoffs.

I blame the NHL for the this game last night. They let hitting to take place over and beyond what I thought was eliminated from the game.

For example when a player has the puck and then passes it off. The opposing player has a right to check or hit the player. However once the puck is in transition to another player, hitting the player that has already passed the puck amounts to interference and a penalty should be called.
This is what the Bruins resorted to,is just hit players whenever they could whether the puck was elsewhere or not.  In my opinion that,s what causes retaliation and a violent game follows.
I may have incorrectly understood that this was taken out of the game. I,m surprised that the referee s allowed that last night.
Is the NHL going back to the goon like hitting ? I see no talent being displayed when players are running at others causing interference.

If so, Dubas might have to get a couple of goons on the squad.

Good signing, especially if the top guys are taking most of the cap for next year. Protection signing.
And who knows how good these guys can get. Seems like most of the call ups end up producing.

  Good deal
8 years is a long time for both parties.

I like this slide ,More money to save on the cap for next year.  Probably shaved off at least 2 mil.

Crazy idea:

Step 1.
Rent Taylor Hall at the deadline for some pretty good NHL-ready youngsters (Johnsson, Brown, 1st round pick) to help the Devils shepherd Hischier/Bratt/Butcher (I'd also LMAO if all it cost was Zaitsev one-for-one). Honestly not sure what it'd cost, but we've got cost controlled assets at the right age range for their budget team. We can handle the cap hit with all the space we've banked with Nylander out.

Step 2.
Hall - Matthews - Nylander

Step 3.
Stanley Cup

Step 4.
Trade Hall at the draft to recoup the spend to hire him as a mercenary in his prime. Maybe he wants to go home to Calgary to ride out his UFA platform season.

  More offence ?

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Contracts for the Big-3

It's difficult for me to conclude that Dubas has botched the negotiation when the negotiation hasn't concluded.  Let's see what happens by 5 p.m. tomorrow.  About all I can conclude at this stage is that not having Nylander as yet hasn't destroyed the Leafs season.  They are in a very nice spot in the standings and are poised to continue it, hopefully with Nylander in the lineup.  Whether it has indeed been screwed up by Dubas will take some time to reveal itself.

I can't see Dubas messing this up. He is working within the cap system that,s before him.The fact that they signed Taveras for 11 mil pretty well tells me that Nylander was not in their long term plan. He is being offered around the league and I think will be traded.

I,m giving my .02 cents on what's happening. The contract value has been worked out,but Dubas is trying to trade him for a cap friendly top 4 defenceman and some change.

They need a top 4 for the playoffs more than another scorer. With Gardiner becoming a too expensive free agent in the off season, this would solve their defenceman shortage as well for next year at a cheaper dollar than Gardner.
