Guilt Trip

I like SDA and don't totally agree with the assessment. I think he's got good speed and while he's not NHL ready he has only played 1 pro season. He'll just be turning 22 in Sept. It will be interesting to see how he does this coming season for the Marlies.

I think that's all true and it's a real caveat, but if his play style is top-6, there either needs to be overwhelming offense, or some grit and grind that'll help them weather top defenses so they can contribute complementarily. Otherwise you are in the Adam Brooks, Seth Griffith range. I don't see a legitimate fit for him in the bottom of the roster where opportunities are actually open.

Happy to be surprised and wrong though

I think Robertson is another "top 6 or bust" kind of player.

I largely agree with that. If he improves his skating posture and gooses his speed, his work rate could give him a Trevor Moore-like role. Coupled with his shooting ability, he's an easier player to shelter and leverage than Der-Arguchintsev who needs lots of puck involvement to be useful.

I have Der-Arguchintsev in the same boat as Abramov, Abbruzzese, Miettinen, and Ovchinnikov; and to a lesser extent Joe Miller, Ty Voit, and Nick Moldenhauer due to their longer runways. All of them are shootier than SDA.

TLN: 2. Nick Robertson
He's still good! The door is open for him to grab a spot opposite Nylander and a rejuvenated Tavares. Let's see if he can channel his intensity into more calculated moments. And please don't break.

PPP: 20. Mikhail Abramov
Let's see if he can adjust to the AHL and find ways to dominate the game the way he did in the Q

Absolutely the kid is still good. I laugh at people who think he's in a make or break season. I found this interesting....
His brother never became a full time NHLer until he was 21and he played 51 games that season.
Jason played 60 AHL games had 25 Goals, 47pts. He also played a full 4 years in the OHL. Nick has played 49 AHL games has 21 Goals, 44pts. He only had 3 years in the OHL. Nick was shut down by COVID and played in the A as an underage when he should have been sent back to the OHL. He's also had a couple of significant injuries.
Nick turns just 21 in September and for some people to expect him to make it this year or be a bust after all the setbacks is def shortsighted.
Liljegren never made it to the NHL until 22 and I realize D men take longer but we can't look past Nick's setbacks..
I think Nick will be on the Leafs at some point this season..

While I don't think this is a make or break season for Robertson, I do think he has to have an injury free, successful season in the AHL in the least to shed that premature "bust" moniker that seems to be following him around.

Injury free would be really good for him. Hope the best for him

nobody works harder than Nick, unlike Bracco who was a slouch, so much so that Clune had to call him out.

For sure, he really needs that full season for his development. Has to be more slippery given that he's a smaller player.

I'm thinking that the 3A in 5 games wasn't the tournament that Knies was hoping to have.

Nor was it the tournament the Americans wanted to have.

TLN: 1. Matthew Knies

Even if his offensive creativity doesn't develop, you can easily pencil him into the bottom 6 as a forechecking menace. His floor is an NHL player. Obviously we'd like for him to become more than just an energy winger and hopefully he doesn't settle into tunnel vision.

I try not to put too much stock in this tournament anymore.  Jerry D'Amigo ruined it for me.
