This was the beginning of the end. Less than a year later the team is moving to Utah. The Tempe site and proposal was great in my opinion and was going to be funded entirely with private money. Citizens voted no.

Leaving aside that this "private money" included the city spending 200 million on infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the building and 700 million in tax relief there was still the reality that this group, whose financing was always dubious, wanted the city on the hook for a pretty significant portion of the debt they'd be taking on in order to build the "entertainment district". If the project fell apart, the city would be on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars. These projects always, after independent analysis, are found to exaggerate the economic benefits.

I mean, think of it this way, if this project was this entirely privately funded enterprise which made a ton of economic sense without risk or cost to the city...why involve the city at all? Why not just build the thing?

If you watch the video below, 16:50 to 23:45, it addresses the infrastructure and some parameters of the proposed deal:

Playoff Rielly is on another level, I would keep him on PP1

Playoff Rielly is a thing. I have Lily on the PP as he was doing well there before he got hurt and keep Morgan's minutes down a bit and save him for the high leverage stuff.

Quote from: cabber24 on April 17, 2024, 10:07:15 AMThis six D Carlton has in the starting lineup might just be the Game 1 six. Brodie just doesn't play ugly enough plus losing a step the last few years, I think he's on the outside.

I think that 6 will physically hurt to play against. The Leafs look tougher on paper, grind them to a pulp.

Benoit has to play game 1 against Boston, he's been too good. I have both Brodie and Lyubushkin below Giordano on the depth chart.

Also, Liljegren has to go back to PP1 and replace Rielly.

Quote from: cabber24 on April 16, 2024, 09:32:21 PMGlad to be in playoffs bring on Boston. No path is easy. I hope the Leafs show grit and not stupidity. It's too easy to cross check rats in the face. Hit often and hit to hurt. Definitely a better built playoff roster this time around.

Really worried about our goaltending and Morgan Rielly playing too much. We need to give all of D meaningful minutes and they need to be deployed purposely. Roll balanced lines and spread the skill and grit and grind them down.
Not concerned with Rielly. Bush is his major concern. There will be a short leash on Sammy for sure. Woll has looked good the last 3 of 4 games, more like himself prior to injury. Wonder who they start tomorrow. Maybe Jones gets the call.

I wouldn't play Lyubushkin (at least to start) in the playoffs. The Leafs have better options.

Quote from: Dappleganger on April 16, 2024, 10:18:32 AMMy favourite part is the Leafs play either Florida/Boston in the first round and either Tampa/Florida/Boston in the second depending on how things shake out. I LOVE the NHL playoff format (sarcasm). Leafs are only allowed to play 3 teams in the playoffs it seems.

Well... you have to win to get out of your division... or at least win the division to face a wild card team. The Leafs are finishing 5th and will be playing the 4th place in the east.

I think that's my point. If it was seeded 1-8, finishing 5th, the Leafs would play either the Rangers or Carolina in round two if they both win their series. Just more options, more variety. It's boring seeing the same team every year.

That being said, I'm actually excited to face Boston, as the Leafs haven't played them for a few years now.

I don't think we know what Sammy we're going to get until game 1 of the playoffs.

A Matthews hat trick would really just be lovely.

The Leafs have gotten away with quite a few penalties tonight.

Quote from: CarltonTheBear on April 02, 2024, 08:34:44 AMFlorida going 3-6-1 in their last 10 games has put home ice in round 1 back on the table. If the Leafs win their game in hand on the Panthers they will be just 2 points behind (Florida has the tie breaker locked up though). Leafs play Florida once more in game 81 of the season, so it could really just come down to that.

I'm not overly confident about it, but definitely a possibility.

Gives the Leafs something to play for.
