General NHL News & Views / Re: 2022-23 NHL Thread

I have lost interest in watching regular season games because, at the all-star break, I already know who the Leafs will face in the first round of the playoffs.

Obviously there are 1st round matchups that are preferable. Going into the final week of the season under the old format, those matchups could be jostled. There was incentive to win (or lose) to secure a matchup.

What a difference it was last year with the Raptors not knowing if they'd play the Bucks, Celtics, or Philadelphia or slide into the play-in round. The games actually mattered. What a novel concept!

Quote from: Bill33 on January 23, 2023, 09:24:35 PMI'm still kind of underwhelmed by Reilly. He's just sort of.. there. Maybe he's still getting his timing back.

Rielly is probably just tired of playing these regular season games as I am of watching them. He'll be solid come playoff time.

Quote from: bustaheims on January 18, 2023, 11:15:24 AMSounds like this was a religious beliefs issues (He's Russian Orthodox) - which, while I understand the pressure there, I don't agree with. Is it really that big a deal to put on a sweater and skate around the ice for a bit? I mean, one of the core principles of Christianity is to treat others the way you'd like to be treated. Also, the whole "love thy neighbour" thing and not passing judgment on others and such. Seems to me like he's going against more of the principles of his religion than he's abiding by.

Provorov should abstain from playing in the NHL until the NHL denounces their sports betting partnerships, imo.

This has been the worst officiated game of the season.

Quote from: Zee on January 12, 2023, 10:14:26 AMI doubt Matthews will play since he sat out last night, better to rest him up and see if he's ok for a more important game against Boston.

Hopefully Kampf is ok...that head shot he took you never know, symptoms can appear hours later so let's hope he doesn't have an concussion issue.

Or a neck issue.

Who says no?

Chicago flips Kerfoot to Colorado for a 3rd.

The Leafs. And the salary cap.

Salary cap will be close with Muzzin's LTIR space but I don't know how exactly that calculates. :)

Salary cap isn't close. We'd be over by almost 2M with a 20 man roster. You would also have to put one of our D (Timmins, Benn) on waivers and no one is clearing. You'd have to do a dbl retention with at least one, or both Toews/Kane to get close Muzz's cap hit.

Ok, do a double retention on Toews.

My only point is the Leafs could find a way to make the numbers work.

Lose Engvall or Holl and free up more cap space.

Bunting - Matthews - Kane
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Marner
Knies - Toews - Nylander
ZAR - Kampf - Holmberg

Rielly - Brodie
Benn - Liljegren
Gio - Timmins

Quote from: Dappleganger on December 23, 2022, 04:24:43 PMOutfield is complete.

I can't believe that's true. Kiermaier is an often injured and, frankly, not a very good hitter. The Jays can't really be banking on him being their every day CF.

Well I thought the outfield was Springer, Varsho, Kiermaier, Gurriel, Merrifield.😅

Springer, Varsho, Kiermaier, Merrifield can all play CF so I think a rotation of some sort there. No, I don't think Keirmaier is the everyday CF. I see him more as the Springer fill-in (Springer won't play a full season). With Gurriel leaving in the trade as well, I feel the outfield is less than complete.

Definitely a win now move. Outfield is complete.

Gurriel going to Arizona as well. Can't say I love that.

Varsho ranked as the top defensive outfielder in the Majors last year by outs above replacement (18).

That didn't take long. 😅

Varsho can play a little catcher as well, 31 games last season.

I can't help but think that the Jays misjudged what they were going to do to replace Teo's bat in the lineup.

If they had a plan, I'm not sure why we wouldn't have seen it by now.
