Quote from: Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington on May 22, 2024, 05:43:44 PMI agree that I can only see Marner headed for free agency. About the only leverage the Leafs have is being able to give him an 8 year deal in either keeping him or sign and trade, but I reckon he will go the Matthews route of shorter term and sign for 3-4 years on the open market at a rate the Leafs won't match and then a big big contract aged 30-31. So that leverage won't apply.

Wonder if this could turn ugly at games this season if/when he refuses to waive. He's already a target on social media. That's bound to transfer into the arena too at some point.
Only way 16 doesn't get an 8 year deal is if he doesn't want to sign one or goes the UFA route. He has to be on the signing team's roster by the deadline to qualify for an 8 year deal.

If the Leafs ask him to waive he won't be coming back here if he goes to UFA.

I think you need to put yourself in Marner's camp for a second...this is a way to get him an 8 year deal and leave with dignity...he's from here.  He's not going to poison this well.  And the Leafs have leverage.

Good for him...I didn't find Keefe to be dislikable...just maybe slow at the wheel.

Quote from: Deebo on May 21, 2024, 08:13:19 AMIts kind of ridiculous the cap is only going up to 87.7M

The PA deficit from the Covid year is reportedly paid off and league revenues were reported as high 6.43B in 2022/23.

Even using a conservative 6.0B as the revenue number, 350M in estimated player benefits (the CBA uses 100M on 3.8B of revenue as their estimate), and no escalator, it results in a midpoint of 88.3M and a cap of 101.5M.

I kind of understand not wanting to increase it too much at once, but its only increasing 4.2M this off season. It went up more than that when the cap was under 70M

I was reading the MOU from 2020 and there is 5% limit to the yearly cap increase, which would be that cap of 87.7M

But there is a provision for when it is anticiapted that in the upcoming season the total paid to the players won't end up being 50% of that seasons league revenues, the PA and league can agree to increase the cap by up to an additional 5%. The PA and must league agree to any increase by June 15th.

If there is an agreement, the cap could go as high as 91.85M next season.

This is all interesting, Deebo...what impacts would this have on the escrow?

I think there's a better case for him playing for the Leafs next season than there is returning him to junior.  There's just nothing left for him to do there.

Either that, or sending him to the SHL?

Quote from: Zee on May 17, 2024, 04:34:30 PMAh yes, Shanahan's "exhaustive search" that interviewed 2 people and hired the guy everyone predicted for a couple of months

1. Tre hires the GM.
2. There are a lot of vacancies right now, so you move quickly.
3. Did you have in mind a better alternative?

I think he's got the experience to deal with the egos, he's got the street cred, and honestly I think our boys need a shit kicking once in a while that a guy like Berube can dole out.

There's a new sheriff in town, and I'm OK with that.  From what I read, he can do the job well.

Quote from: louisstamos on May 16, 2024, 08:32:48 AMIn hindsight - how was this guy projected to go in the 3rd round by some people!?!?

And he was playing in London...not like house league in some remote town in Northern Russia.

I like the idea of getting some cheap bluey chip prospects that are already contributing, with a solid goalie, and looking at 24-25 as a reset of sorts?

And if it all goes well, load up a little at the deadline, and if not, offload.

And another thing...I'm not sold with Rielly as your horse on the blueline.

And another thing...if Bert and Domi want to come back, are we good with that?

Quote from: CarltonTheBear on May 15, 2024, 03:11:45 PMI don't think you'd see Nashville having to give up a 1st rounder on their side. Ultimately Marner for Saros mostly straight up feels kinda right, assuming both teams see each player in their best forms. Marner is a perennial 90-point winger with Selke potential, but is coming off (yet another) disappointing playoff run. Saros is a perennial Vezina-ish goalie, but is coming off his weakest season in awhile (was still good granted). Each have 1 year left on their deals before coming UFAs. Marner's AAV is more than double what Saros' is, which made me wonder if the Leafs would need to retain a little to even things up. But on the flip side if the deal is done after July 1st Marner's remaining salary is just a paltry $775k for the season, which may make Nashville content with the difference in cap hits.

Ultimately other things could get involved if there's a desire to make it bigger but as far as the one for one aspect I think the value is already pretty darn close.

I absolutely would not want to trade Marner for a goalie. I know we need one but Marner's our best trade chip and goalies are voodoo.

I get where you're coming from, but...

1.  The Leafs have F'd around with goalies for most of Dubas' tenure...wouldn't it be nice to have one that's been really good for a while?  Woll is good when he can play, but he can't play much.  They need a starter.
2.  In that proposed deal, you're getting some decent d-men as well, which they need.
3.  Marner is not the best trade chip the Leafs have.

I'd have to imagine that any Marner deal would have to come with an extension in order for him to waive, right?

Maurice could handle the Toronto media.

I'm trying to remember how well he managed that last time 'round.

Canada was up against Austria 6-1 and uh... let it get to overtime. But good thing captain clutch was there.

Trade Value!!!

It's like we share a brain.

I know it's kind of a "don't touch it" subject, but now that Nylander has his new deal, maybe it's time to 2C him.

It wasn't going to work well in a contract year, but he's got a ton of runway here to give it a real shot.

Anybody think we should amalgamate this thread with the "armchair" thread?
