As I was reviewing depth and contract term etc. this morning at Cap Friendly, I was reminded that we have Phil Kessel on the books for 1 more year at $1.2 million - which means that Phil costs more than each of these listed roster players - Wayne Simmonds, Michael Amadio, Jason Spezza, Rasmus Sandin, and Alex Biega.

One more year......

General NHL News & Views / Re: Seattle Expansion Draft

No, Seattle had a period of time where they were able to speak/negotiate with exposed free agents and if they came to an agreement with that player during that time they could sign them and they'd count as their pick from that team.

They could have spoken to Larsson, not signed him, picked someone else from Edmonton, and then went back to Larsson once free agency opened and signed him then but obviously that would have opened him up to other offers.

Really helpful. Thank you.

Larsson is the only piece from Edmonton that really made sense, so, no huge surprise there.

Dallas' offerings were slim pickings too if they weren't interested in Bishop.

I should know this, but obviously I am a bit confused. I thought that signing a pending UFA, like Adam Larsson, did not count as a pick. I thought they had to pick 30 players (1 per team) from the eligible lists and that any UFA's they sign was over and above that. Correct, or no?

Good visual here. Canada may have started too slow for some, but now leading the world.

Perhaps Freddie comes back and does a conditioning stint with the Marlies. Maybe that will help get him ready physically and mentally.

That clearly implies Freddy is done.

I’m not so sure. My guess would be that He plays a couple of games at the end of the season. That would allow Jack to be fully rested for the playoffs. If Freddie does well then he gets the chance to be the man, and if he doesn’t do well it’s easy to come right back to Jack.

I’m not a Freddie fan at all, but him coming back really strong us still the best case scenario for the Leafs.

I have a general question. If it has been discussed somewhere else then I apologize in advance.

Are teams restricted from making a trade during the off week? If the Leafs made a trade now and it involved a player who was away in the Caribbean for a week, what would his obligation be? What if the player continued with his week off and then the team he was traded to had their off week 2 weeks from now?

That is more than one question, but I suppose you get the point.

This article updates on the ratings situation between FAN590 and TSN1050. I am surprised that The FAN still lead in both the morning and afternoon ratings. The article does not touch on it, but perhaps that is due to the fact that their signal is much better and reaches a much wider area. I listen to TSN1050 via streaming on the iHeart app on my drive home because the signal for the radio is garbage north of Toronto.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Coach Mike Babcock

It looks very much like the players have tuned out the coach and might even be riding things out until he is out. Not sure. It looks dreadful.

The Showcase is on (again)!

What say you to:
Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Moore - Tavares - Kerfoot
Mikheyev - Petan - Kapanen
Timashov - Shore - Gauthier

I would trade Kapanen onto the right side of Tavares and have Kerfoot as the 3 C

Seems to me that this is a pretty simple message from Babs to Spezza: I wasn't impressed with you in camp and I'm still not.

And the simple fact that if Babcock likes their penalty kill more with Shore in it then that is what it will be. I am a bit surprised at all the sentimental stuff online. Babs has to ice the team he thinks is best and that is that. Why all the heart strings for Spezza?

I think they should hold off until the start of the game. Left the captain do the pre-game skate with the A and the. As they announce the players...

If it is JT they could announce Barrie (93) and the the last player would be JT and announce him as the captain. Big pop from the crowd and good energy to start the game. And it avoids a silly press conference.

My guess would be Tavares with the C and Matthews and Rielly with A's.
