Quote from: Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate on Today at 12:58:32 AMMotM: Nylander.  He misses on that breakaway and the game could have gone the other way.
HM: Liljegren.

I reserve the right to switch to M&M if I have a change of heart.

+1

Matthews, Marner could easily replace Nylander

I didn't expect them to go 5-0 without Rielly
Brodie rediscovering his game while partnered with Liljegren, to me, explains how they filled in the back end over those games.
Liljegren is all grown up now. Last night, led the D in ice time, hits, blocked shots, played the PP, SH .. - seemed like he was on a mission
Only one shot missed the net during those 5 games, +5, 7pts
The PP didn't skip a beat with him quarterbacking it - might have even been better - I never would have expected that.

Rielly ________
Brodie Liljegren
Benoit McCabe
Fill in that blank with a decent RHD and that D looks pretty good to me right now.

Quote from: Guilt Trip on Yesterday at 10:42:07 PMGreat play by Liljegren saving Willy.

He made a nice cross ice pass to Matthews later on in the PP.

Last number of games, his play has gone up.

He caught up to Cooley who is not slow

And thwarted him.

All of sudden Liljegren is beginning to look like the D we all hoped for.

McCabe has seemingly solidified into a dependable top 4 guy.

Benoit appeared like a miracle from heaven.

Brodie suddenly looks not-washed-up after switching sides.

Even Lagesson and Lajoie have turned in decent performances.  And now this Rifai fellow.

Who'd I leave out, Gio?  Rielly?  :)

Add that rush ...

Keefe sticks with Tavares and Nylander on separate lines. I don't think either line performed particularly well against St. Louis but nice to see the experiment getting a few games.

I like this. Stress test Domi (see if Nylander can adjust and carry the line), give Tavares a rest but also boost McMann/Robertson's offensive opportunities in a relatively low-stakes situation. Most lines will have something a little different to play for in an otherwise throwaway game.

Only slightly worried by the number of brain cells on line 2. Because it's probably only 2.

On the upside re the Domi line, they're all a little crazy so maybe they'll be tough to defend against. You'd probably want the best defensive pairing out there with them as much as possible - avoid the bottom pairing.

The three best forwards for parking their body in front of the net in my opinion - particularly for the PP would be Tavares, Knies and McMann (Bertuzzi would be my 4th). To have all three of those guys on the 2nd PP is probably something that won't last.

I thought McMann's finish would compliment Domi's puck distribution. And McMann would help cover Domi defensively.

Interesting line up to watch tonight.

It would be wonderful if Matthews can get his 50th with his family watching.

Quote from: CarltonTheBear on Yesterday at 11:53:42 AMWouldn't be shocked if this was just about giving him a chance to continue practicing with players since he's not on the current Leafs road trip. Obviously it'd be great if he was able to get into a game too though.

Maybe. He's basically there for up to 5 games (3 as the standard, plus the team's option of requesting 2 more), since it's an LTIR loan. Typically, this type of assignment would be partly to assess if a player is ready to return to action, so, I guess we'll see.

I think Keefe said that they were not going to have any practices on this road trip
That probably factored into it

Quote from: cw on February 20, 2024, 06:25:51 PMI agree. Chiseling a game off was a long shot.
The leak of the decision might have been a little more compelling grievance than anything to do with the incident itself (and that was not that big of an issue).
The team going 4-0 took a bunch of whatever sting there was away for me.
Hopefully, they keep playing well so they don't mortgage too much of the future at the deadline.

It forced the team to tighten up defensively as to not overwork an undermanned defence corps. If they can keep that up, with some minor tweaks to the bottom end of the roster, we could have something here.

I feel similarly. I kind of didn't want to say it because it hasn't been long enough and they might go back to their old ways. That game they held their opponent to 15 shots was a really, really good defensive performance. Can't help but ask yourself "why can't they play that way every night?"

Dman Callups
Benoit
Lagesson
Lajoie
Rifai

It used to be when the Leafs called someone up, I'd often be on the edge of my seat - anxious for a screw up. Naturally, Benoit (& only Rifai for a game) but that group has done a pretty good job when called upon.

Marlies seemed to have 2-3 AHL vet dmen. Now, they're carrying a bunch of guys who have an outside shot or better of making it. When you listen to the interviews or read the development stories, they're working on all kinds of things with these players year round.

In short, I think the franchise has improved in their development of young players. I think they're doing a better job of identifying undrafted talent. And they seem to have a broader view of how they can help, diagnosing it and more patience nurturing good character guys willing to put in the work. I can't point to any particular thing.

With the prospect cupboard kind of bare, it is very timely. If they can add a decent quality undrafted player or two to the roster, that can really help in a number of ways.

I have no stats or facts to solidly back that up. It is just a feeling that has been developing as I track these young players trying to make it.

Quote from: bustaheims on February 20, 2024, 04:07:32 PMThe most Bettman was ever going to do was knock one game off the suspension, so, him upholding the whole thing really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. He very rarely makes any changes to supplemental discipline decisions.

I figured top 5. I would never have guessed top 2

I think Hull won the Hart that year.
Matthews barely seems to be in that conversation - more on the outside.
Can you imagine where the Leafs would be in the standings without his 49 goals (a little over 25% of the Leafs goals) ?

Yup... and tips to Lilyhammer. Another great game for him.

+1

They only gave McMann 0:34 of PP time that he made good on so I better get a vote in for him while I can ...

Liljegren did well considering he seemed to get banged up to the extent I wondered if he could come back. And they were a dman short with Lagesson's injury early on.

I thought McCabe had a really good game too

Quote from: Guilt Trip on February 17, 2024, 08:46:11 PMI hope McMann gets a shot in the top 6. This guy just scores goals...thats all he does..

He's been wasted on the 4th line with Kampf getting 9 mins/game with no PP ice time.

He should be on the 2nd PP regularly. He would be leading the 2nd PP in PP goals handily if they had played him there.  He did it in the AHL: 45 goals in 91 games. Last season he had 10 PPG in 30 games!! This is not a great revelation or rocket science. Tonight, was his first decent crack on a Leafs PP.
