Perfectly reasonable 3rd string goalie.

And I feel as whelmed as I did when I used my first Dell.

How many 1-year contracts is this now ?

Next years off-season should be just as fun.

I'm a little surprised that this wasn't a 2-year contract since the expansion draft rules say we need to leave a goalie under contract in 21/22 exposed. Guess we can always figure that out later though.

What's his situation when it comes to waivers? Does he need to clear to be sent to the Marlies?

That?ll just have to be the 4th string goalie they haven?t signed yet.

How did I never know that San Jose's AHL affiliate was called the Worcester Sharks?  Massive missed opportunity if they didn't play in an arena sponsored by Lea & Perrins.

In a normal season, he?d need to pass through waivers. This upcoming season (if/when it happens), who knows? I have to imagine the rules will be a little different for 20/21 (or should is be 2021?).

Leafs will still need to sign a goalie to expose in the expansion draft unless of course they re-sign Freddie.

It's going to get weird if the AHL isn't up and running when the season starts...like I guess the guys that get cut are just going to hang around and practice?

I am very confident that
a) there will not be an AHL that starts at the same time as the NHL, if at all
b) there will be a taxi-squad situation where rosters are expanded to allow for extra goalies and skaters; active roster needs to be cap compliant; inactive roster has cap relief up to the usual amount (1.075M)
c) schedule will be compressed into Jan to July extremely optimistically, with an early August draft

They will expand the rosters but not the cap so players will still have to pass through waivers. If they expand the rosters I expect the Leafs to run a 21 man roster(7 D). That'll save you at least 700K towards the cap. Well I think they run 21 max anyway.

Are we certain this is a third string goalie signing or is that just the overarching opinion on the board?  Could it possibly be the plan to still trade Andersen and go with a Campbell/Dell tandem for a full season?

Nah, he's definitely coming in to be the 3rd string goalie.

With the ECHL playing it will be even stranger with no AHL.  One would think a highly amended schedule and inter division play could happen to some degree.

Like, it shouldn't even be a question at this point. There's no way the Leafs go into the season with their only 2 NHL goalies having never started more than 30 games in a season. If Andersen is moved, another goalie is coming in.

Well, I can understand there being a question since Andersen and Dell had pretty similar numbers this year. And even each of the advanced metrics (QS, QS%, RBS, GA%) barely gives an edge to Andersen. Obviously with the team wanting to win now it would be a pretty big gamble to go with a Campbell/Dell tandem and I agree that it's not going to happen but it really isn't a crazy idea. I mean, we endured a two-month stretch (Jan-Feb) of .890% goaltending from Freddie last year after a .900% October and still were able to maintain a winning record. Andersen isn't exactly Ed Belfour here.

Sure, but Andersen has a track record as a successful starting goalie, which neither Dell nor Campbell have, and, a team looking to win the Cup isn't ditching that to try their luck with a pair of career backups. They're going to give their starter an opportunity to show last season was an aberration - at least, not when he's still under contract.

So, yeah, it is a crazy idea for a team that believes itself to be a Cup contender.

Eh, I really don't see it as being any crazier than sticking with Andersen as the number one again and hoping, as he passes 30, that he suddenly doesn't suck or disappoint in every "game 7" and that his inevitable long, inconsistent stretches don't hamper their seeding. In fact, that the team still managed to win last year with mostly .890-.900% goaltending suggests to me that they really don't need anything special at that position. Just decent, consistent goaltending which, I guess, CampBell might actually be able to provide.

Anyway neither scenario is particularly appealing to me. I was really hoping for a Lehner and would have settled for a Crawford.

I think maybe Andersen has a much shorter leash this season, given Campbell > Hutch.
