Non-Hockey Chatter / Re: Idiocracy 2024
It's the right move...that should have happened a year ago.  The Democrats shooting themselves in the foot and gut over and over again.  They better have a phenomenal game plan moving forward that isn't Kamala Harris who has done very little in her time as VP

Not to mention the unfortunate reality that a woman and non-white Presidential candidate probably isn't the best idea today given the nonsense they are running against.   Obama winning back to back elections pushed the racist crowd into this frenzy.  I have a hard time seeing her pull off a victory over Trump right now.

Moving to streaming isn't a terrible idea.  Breaking your product into 50 pieces to make it as hard as possible to access games however.  To watch the Leafs you need to either pay separately for a TSN, Sportsnet, and Prime subscription or have cable with TSN + Sportsnet and a prime subscription.

The NHL has had the same executive branch running the league since 1993.  Over that time the NHL has fallen drastically behind the other major sports.  That isn't entirely surprising as hockey is always going to have some regional limitations because of the expense of the sport but did manage to throw in three lockouts to help that process.

The flip side to that is the Leafs were 1-1; 2-0-1; 1-1-1; 4-0-1; 2-1-1 on the road in the playoffs.

That had the Leafs playing in Columbus, Montreal, Tampa, Florida and Boston.

10-3-4 on the road vs 6-12-2 at home.

I don't know that the ice is the issue when the Leafs have been playing in other heavy use rinks and don't have the same problem winning games on the road.

Toronto Blue Jays / Re: 2024 Blue Jays

Kiermaier is still being credited with a +0.5 WAR on the season entirely due to defense.  He's not a 10 million dollar player.  The smartest thing for teams would be to not claim him.  Make the Jays buy him out and then sign him for league minimum to be your 4th outfielder.

Also, once again, the NHL is stupid when the David Kampf of the Leafs is making 10.5M and we are bitching about Marner making 11M.  Screw the salary cap.

A bigger problem for me is that the vast majority of the goals in the playoffs aren't simply "dirty goals", they are goals scored quickly when teams enter the zone with speed and get scoring chances before a defense gets a chance to get set up.  The Leafs have gotten progressively worse at this over the last few years as our defense has been offensive non-contributors.  I like the additions of OEL and Tanev for that reason.  Tanev isn't going to light the world on fire offensively but he's able to get the puck moving up the ice and OEL is absolutely a guy who can contribute on the offensive end.

OEL's 9 goals would have made him first on the team in defenseman goal scoring and his 32 points would be 2nd behind Rielly's 58 (McCabe was 2nd with 28).  Tanev's biggest offensive value is likely to be giving Rielly more room to take chances offensively

Friendly reminder that Pittsburgh clearly tampered with Dubas while he was still the Leafs GM.  Why there was no issues with that still confuses me

Capfriendly is still up as of 9:30 today.  Figured it would be offline by now.

The puckpedia site is probably a few edits away from being worth playing around with.  I find their entire site is really bland.  I like the content on their roster pages but everything being white background it gets hard to look at after a while just being black text on a white background.  Things blend in.  I do like that just hovering over salaries will show NTC/NMC details (eg. Domi having a 13-team NTC) though.

Frig you Maduro, your boys took one hell of a beating.

Canada should have scored about 6.

Finish continues to be a big issue for Canada so far under Marsch but they certainly have had chances to score in most games.  This game was easily their best offensive game as they had several chances that were either put wide or stopped by the keeper.

4-0 loss to the Netherlands; 0-0 draw against France; 2-0 loss to Argentina; 1-0 win against Peru; 0-0 draw against Chile; 1-1 draw against Venezuela

This is also probably the best run of teams Canada has faced. WR 1, 2, 7, 31, 40, and 54.  So a 2-2-2 record over that stretch is pretty phenomenal (keeping in mind the draw against France was immediately before Euros/Copa so France wasn't going to risk injury to star players).

Canada defeats Venezuela 1:1 (4:3) in penalties to advance to the semi-finals and face Argentina again

I think the biggest thing for me is that Stolarz plays more than Woll than Samsonov.  I think the Leafs just play better with a goalie who makes good positional decision making.  When Sammy was playing at his best, he could stop anything but mostly stayed between the posts.  The second something went wrong though he would be scrambly and it's hard to defend when your goalie can't stay in the crease.  It's easier to defend when you know your goaltender is able to make the save as long as you give him a sight line.

Good to hear.  Murray and Hildeby in the AHL and the Russian tandem in Cincy presumably

I still wish the NHL went with more of an NBA style salary structure.  Let teams go over the cap to retain their own players but limit how much you can spend in free agency if you are over those cap thresholds.  And institute a luxury tax on cap overage so that teams can go over but make it punitive so that it benefits the teams that maybe can't afford to spend that way..but tie any of those money transfers to payroll.

Quote from: CarltonTheBear on July 02, 2024, 10:03:30 AMPretty good job of the Leafs to keep this to two years. One of the reasons I wasn't too keen on Stolarz or Brossoit at first (aside from the latter's other stuff) was I thought for sure both of them would be getting 3-year contracts. That would have conflicted with when Hildeby loses his waiver exemption (26/27 season). A 2-year deal now means that lines up with Stolarz's contract expiring, pretty clearing paving the way for Hildeby to potentially earn a full time NHL spot that season. If he proves capable of it in the next 2 years of course.
What is Brossoit's other stuff?

He's an Alex Jones follower.  Follows a bunch of conspiracy theory nonsense to veers into school shooting denial topics.

Between Hildeby, Peska and Ahktyamov...one of them has to hit eventually.  Agreed entirely that 2 years was a fantastic move.
