Leafs Rumours & Speculation / Re: Phoenix Trade up to #1?

Pheonix will not be gutting their team for Matthews and unless there's a McDavid coming back, I don't see the Leafs trading him away.

High-end from what I've heard is a more defensively capable version of Mike Modano.

Low-end is probably Chris Drury.
Madano? Lets hope not. Yes he was a very good player but I never thought of him as elite.  I like this comparison better...

Marc Crawford, Matthews’ coach with the Lions, couldn’t have given the young star more praise, lauding his hockey sense and comparing him to two current NHL superstars as well as the Hall of Fame centre who he won the 1996 Stanley Cup with in Colorado.

“He will be a No. 1 centre in the NHL and his game will be one where I think he can dominate with his shot and his abiltiy to make short area plays - dekes and shots and quick passes that spring people,” Crawford told Yahoo Canada Sports.  “He’s a little like Anze Kopitar and a little like Jamie Benn.  His speed and the way he drives the net is like Anze.  He shoots like Benn and stays on puck for second chances like him.

“The player he reminds me most of is Joe Sakic. Joe didn’t need to play with outstandingly great players, he made people better by converting passes that seemingly weren’t very good, he was good at putting pucks in really good areas.  His release and shot is like Sakic’s, Joe was deceptive with shooting angles, Auston has those same abilities.  He is a great scoring centre.”

I think Colby Armstrong thought this was a criticism of Kessel that he was making?

That's some heavy back-pedalling there, Colby.
Here's more of the quote...the last line is the important one and that's what the Leafs had to ship him can bet when he says a little, he's downplaying it for the media...

“I just felt with Phil, he was looked on to be kind of the Sidney Crosby of our team — a leader,” former Leafs and Pens winger Colby Armstrong said on Sportsnet FAN 590 on Wednesday. “We all see what (Kessel) does. He skates fast to the puck, he shoots the puck, he can make things happen. But when the game’s on the line, if he can get a goal for you, that’s about all he’s gonna do.”. “As far as winning battles and the extra mile, it did become, for me as a teammate, a little bit frustrating at times.”

Sign him Leafs..we want to finsh in the bottom again....

I don't think there is any way any of the Eastern Conference Semi Finalists could knock off Anaheim or Chicago for the Cup

I'm still sticking with my Tampa pick, although I didn't expect Chicago and Anaheim to look quite this dominant. Anaheim must have had one of the easiest paths to the Conference Finals too.
I don't think it was that easy. A lot of people picked Winnipeg to beat them. They came back in the third period 3 times against Winnipeg.  The fact they made it look relatively easy is a testament to how good they are. Should be a heck of a series with Chicago.

The Leafs have shown recently that they're going to be extra-cautious with their AHL eligible prospects (basically refusing to call Brown/Nylander up this past season). Obviously Strome isn't AHL eligible, so that might change how they approach him, but I would imagine that they'll still prefer to be cautious. With Dubas and Hunter here too we have a management team that likely thinks pretty highly of OHL hockey.

Strome is not McDavid or Eichel.  Hence there should be no question of what they do with Strome if they get him.  Otherwise Shanahan's talk of "finally doing things the right way" will be exposed as just another chapter in MLSE bait-and-switch.

Let's say we get Strome and he tears up camp.  Then he scores  something like 14 or 15 or 16 points in the first 9 games.  The happiest day of my life would be if they sent him back to junior after that.  For it would finally show that management is not going to swayed by short-run success.

If Strome tears it up as in your scenario, he won't be sent back to Jr.

Take the most talented and best player available regardless of size and position. The Oilers can draft position first which is why many speculate they'll take Hanifan. Marner appears to be way ahead of Crouse in the talent department.

Oh and pass on the Domi front.

There's no way PK's goal should have went in...He hit the middle of the net, meaning Hamburglar got out of the way...pathetic goaltending. Stand there and it hits you..

I haven't noticed a jersey throwing problem with any of the playoff bound teams.

I haven't either. I wonder if those clubs would punish those if they did so;)
To my knowledge, correct me if I'm wrong, they're being punished because they're throwing jerseys on the ice during play...not stoppages. It's very dangerous.
Really Cabber ?? So the daily pictures of Dion in dresses or as a doll ( choking hazard ) or tweets about teammates having his wife are just part of the hockey life in Toronto ?? The money won't change the impact this crap has on the person. I applaud them for fighting back.

They are way to easy to pick on when they mail-it-in the way they have been.
Isn't that what we want them to do in order to get the best pick possible? Keep up the good work boys is the way I look at it....just wished it was this bad at the beginning of the year.
And for the record, Kessel is right...he didn't build this team. Nonis needs to be gone as he built this team and still hasn't gotten us a true #1 centre yet. And the media is brutal here.

Down Goes Brown ‏@DownGoesBrown 1h
Dion Phaneuf bursts into Carlyle's empty office. "Coach, great news, we all *finally* figured out how to play your system! Uh... coach?"
DGB = sad attempt at humour....
We all saw it coming so no big surprise...who they bring in next should be interesting...

Thanks C...getting a little tight there for Legwand plus another few.

Yup, it's a little closer than I thought. If you the team ends up trading Franson and replacing him with a Marlie making less than $1mil that frees up some room. You could waive Orr too and replace him with somebody making closer to the league minimum to free up $200-300k. Maybe Nonis uses his patented "oops we used all our cap space" technique to get Gardiner and Reimer to sign deals for less than what I put down.
I don't see Gardiner making 3.5...Under 3 for him and maybe 2 for James....but what do i know?

And I like this signing....not a fan of Legwand at this stage of his career.

Wow the Carrick, Holland, Ashton line looks really good.  What a shot by Ashton!  Holland made his goal look so easy.
Would like to see a 3rd/4th line made of guys like this instead of players who cant play, ala Orr...
