Marlies & Prospect Talk / Re: Marlies' Playoff Games

The height difference between Engvall and Moore/Brooks in that is hilarious.
He has quite the wingspan, nice thing is he seems to know exactly where to go and you can see he snipes exactly were he is looking

The most hilarious thing is how Syracuse left a 6'4" giant in the middle of the ice literally uncontested.

Engvall has started getting into more dangerous ice this season; he was pretty tentative last year, so it's a great sign, as he can certainly make his opportunities count.
I haven't seen him play but is he another that could potentially play for the big club next year?

By all accounts this is their best chance to get to the finals and they're crapping the bed again. Guess it's time to blow it up?  They aren't done yet but they show no signs of this going past 4 games after this effort in a must win tonight.

Actually, I'm a bit miffed the Stars didn't pick Eakins.
It seems the ship has sailed on Eakins after the Edmonton gig, not that the team got better when he was fired.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Lou Will Not Return

I don't think that there's anything wrong with saying that he didn't do enough to improve our defence.
He didn't do enough on the backend for sure. Maybe Shanny saw this as his downfall that lead to moving Lou out to pasture? I think the JVR, Bozak scenario handcuffed the Leafs because I'm sure every GM asked for Marner or Nylander in any deal for a D man.

Zaitsev coming over was basically a done deal before Lou, and finding a 4D on the right side for free is great. Signing said 4D to 7 years is a sketchy bet, and that's on Lou (even though I'm in the camp that Z has yet to play to his potential and that his issues are coachable -- or the result of coaching).

Ah, I actually forgot about how his deal was long in the making before Lou. So Lou's additions to the defence over 3 years were: Corrado, Carrick, Marchenko, Borgman, Rosen, Hainsey

edit: Actually I remember now how Lamoriello visited Zaitsev directly in Russia so I'm willing to add his name to the list too... not sure if that's a good or bad thing though.

Again, picking up better defenders is not exactly easy.  All of us want the Leafs to improve their D.

Here is the list of good/decent (ie top 4) d-men who have changed hands (traded or UFA) in the NHL over the last three seasons, not including the blockbusters (Subban-Weber, Drouin-Sergachev, Johansen-Jones):

McDonaugh
Vatanen
Demers
Shattenkirk
Hamonic
Scandella
Yandle
Larsson
Pysyk
Hamilton

Lets take out the guys who had no chance of landing in Toronto because their old teams wouldn't trade them to the Leafs (Pysyk- Buffalo, Hamilton- Bruins).  Lets take out the guys who were way overpaid to acquire (Shattenkirk-trade, Larsson).  Shattenkirk wanted to sign with the NYR so we didn't really have a shot.

McDonaugh we were in on but NYR seemed to prefer Tampa's package.
Anaheim wanted a C for Vatanen and they wouldn't have taken Bozak, so that means Kadri- yeah, not doing that.
Hamonic we were in on, but the Islanders smartly chose picks over JvR.
Yandle is a LD and has had some big prices attached to him.
Scandella is a LD.

The only miss I see there is Demers, although did they ever have a real shot at him?  As a UFA ('16-17), the Leafs had just finished in the basement of the league the year before.  When traded last summer, Florida may not have wanted to trade him to a team they'd be fighting for a playoff spot with.

That's a great post. I would add Niklas Hjalmarsson to the list tho. I think the Leafs could have grabbed him and even at 30, he would have definitely helped the Leafs.

http://www.mynhldraft.com/2018-draft/2018-nhl-draft-rankings

A collection of draft rankings by draft rankers.

Isac Lundestrom (left shot C/RW) seems to be in everyone's top 30 but sometimes 10, sometimes low 20s.

Jonatan Berggren might be a sleeper pick in the 1st round.
I read nothing but good things about Berggren. Some even say he's just as good as Lundestrom. It will be interesting to see where he goes.

Need a different angle. I don't see anything conclusive there regarding the head as initial/main contact point.
OV scored a beauty to get the win for Washington.

I share your assessment, Frank.

On another matter: as much as I (and many others) have made fun of the whole no-facial-hair policy, I think it is a legitimate thing to criticize. To me, it really shows a person who's out of touch with a younger generation.
I don't think he's out of touch. I think he wants his players and other employees to look professional just like some businesses require their employees to wear suits. I don't really care about it because it really isn't a big deal. I guess that Lou's gone now opens the door for Thornton to come!

Nothing ground-breaking here but Brian Burke talked to MacLean about the Lou situation last night:

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/brian-burke-weighs-maple-leafs-lamoriello-replacement/

I enjoy Burke much more on the camera than behind a GM's desk. Wonder if his plan is to make this more of a full-time gig (Cherry replacement maybe one day?)
He said he wants to get into broadcasting. He won't be replacing Cherry. I'd like to see O'Neil replace Cherry when he retires.

General Rumours & Speculation / Re: Armchair GM 2018-2019
« on: May 01, 2018, 11:43:44 AM »
Wondering if OEL might be a reasonable option for the Leafs to pursue this summer.  Seems to tick a lot of boxes, can likely fill 1'st pairing, eats minutes, relatively young (27 in July), and acquisition cost might not be the over-the-moon variety.  I would think a deal would revolve around a non-16/29/34 piece sprinkled liberally with draft picks and non-Liljegren Marlies.

He's a LHD so unless Babcock has a big change of heart about these things his being a 1st pairing guy would depend on him being better than Rielly and Gardiner which might be true but doesn't seem like a sure thing.

Also, I think if he could be had for that sort of return I don't think he'd still be in Arizona. Just about everything I'd read when sporadic rumours of his availability came up was that the Coyotes wanted a pretty heavy price for him.

I hope GM Dubas starts every Babcock meeting with an hour long presentation from the stat nerd department that demonstrates Rielly or Dermott on his 'wrong' side better than any of Zaitsev, Hainsey, Polak, or whatever other plug the coach has fall in love with next year.
Dubas can do this by simply not signing the plug in the first place.

Of course I am arguing
Lmao...and you will keep responding as long as someone disagrees with you. Dubas wasn't ready or he would have had the job 3 years ago. Shanny might not think he's ready now. I guess we'll find out in the coming days/weeks.

Fair point re: Hainsey but the way I recall it was that he was fairly used to playing his offside. I'm sure you could acquire any LHD and ask them to do that but I'm not sure all of them would be equally proficient there.

Also, I think you'd agree, that whoever eventually is the GM making those decisions here it would be a pretty bold move to force that sort of thing on Babcock as one of their opening gambits.
Definitely agree it would be bold but ultimately it has to be his choice. Would make for some interesting board meetings tho! I do get what Miller was saying tho. I think it's easier now that some of Babs' favs are UFAs. If Dubas doesn't like Leo, he simply doesn't bring him back. I think the best thing is Dubas knows the Marlies inside and out and probably the ECHL guys to, as he's been watching them all year.

So do you want a licensed experienced electrician wiring your house or some fresh kid just out of school?

I don't think that analogy really works here. Lots of young GM hires are good, lots of experienced ones are bad.
Obviously Shanny didn't think he was ready when he hired Lou so it's a mute point. He brought in one of the most respected GM's to show Dubas the way. Dubas is getting the job. It's been the plan all along.
