Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Resigning Zach Hyman?
« on: July 24, 2021, 03:45:59 PM »
Looks like no return for Hyman and he will sign a 7-year deal once free agency comes around.  Dubas reportedly turned down a 6th round pick for his rights

What am I missing here?  Unless Dubas thinks he still has a chance of re-signing Hyman between now and Wednesday, why not basically take whatever you can get for a guy you are going to lose.

Edmonton is no longer in the Leafs' division and they'll be in the other conference, so it's not like he has to worry about Hyman coming back to bite them or something.  Who cares if they give him 8 years and/or it lowers the cap hit on him.  Not like it affects the Leafs one iota.
It affects everyone regardless of divisions. It takes money away from Edm who may be competing against the Leafs for a player in free agency. Every dollar counts.

Matthew Kniesā€¦a player who is college bound.  His scouting report highlights his puck handling ability but also says he lacks skating speed and does too much with the puck resulting in turnovers.

Bigger, slower Marner?
I'd rather have to pull the reigns back on a player then try to get him to do more. Is this the kid that Matthews knows?

So we lose Hyman and McCann falls through.

I have little faith that this team will be better than the one that was iced last season. In fact, it likely will be worse and perhaps even much worse.
They should've attempted to resign Hyman last year.

At the same time maybe they think Hyman is a product of playing with great players. I'm perfectly happy letting Edmonton sign an inflated contract.
If the Leafs wanted to pay Hyman 5 mill, they could have...they don't think he's worth that much and I agree.

Taylor Hall signed for 6 million per over four years? Damn, that's great value. Surprised he didn't test free agency; I'm sure multiple teams would dwarf that offer.
After the year he had, I don't think he was cashing in.

I don't understand.
He did it to save cap because of the threat of offer sheets but he still has to pay Garland but that can be later?? I hope someone offer sheets Hughes lol. I don't get it either.

Putting aside OEL for a second, I gotta say a top-6 forward group consisting of Pettersson, Boeser, Miller, Horvat, Garland, and Pearson is actually pretty solid.
It def is. That OEL contract tho....

Coyotes strike again.
Garland is nice but man  taking on OEL for 6 more years at 8.25 and they gave up the 9th overall too! I'd be pissed if Dubas made this deal.

Word is Oilers offered up a 6th round pick for Hyman. Leafs said no and another GM agreed with the Leafs, it's not enough. Maybe he goes by tomorrow so the Leafs can use the pick in the draft.

I don't know about any of that...it wouldn't make any sense that Edmonton would negotiate an 8 deal with Hyman without knowing what the Leafs would charge for the 8th year sign and trade.
Edmonton has 2 deals in place to cover both scenarios.

On First Up Colaiacovo was saying how much they'll miss his leadership and all that like they did when he was hurt at the end of the year. I'm like what is he talking about? They scored more and the PK went from 76% efficient to 85% when he was out. The team didn't miss a beat. Said it many times, I like Hyman but man is he ever overrated by some.

What an unfortunate name. What were his parents thinking
I don't think it's real.
