Quote from: herman on Today at 01:25:04 PMI don't think staying close to Toronto is a priority for Marner, so Buffalo probably isn't a destination he'd have in mind.

A west coast or Sun Belt city with limited or no income taxation, where people don't know you're a hockey player on the street might appeal if he's laying down his godhood.
No income tax: Nashville, Seattle, Las Vegas, Florida/Tampa, Dallas
Low income tax: Colorado, Utah, St. Louis

Cross-reference with which teams are approaching a contention threshold, have a couple of good prospects on the cusp, while the team needs more assists, and has cap space: Nashville, Utah, Seattle?

A sign and trade after July 1 would set him and the recipient team up nicely: 1 775k year + 8 years doesn't change the cap hit, but will show up more palatably on their payroll ledger.

Not that it matters all that much, but I think the comment about Toronto players being gods was something he was fond of.
He didn't say they were gods. Said they were treated like gods. There's a huge difference.

Quote from: herman on May 17, 2024, 11:59:53 AMI've also seen a couple of rumours from the Calgary and Toronto sides that Marc Savard would be joining him on the bench. He was the PP coach for the Blues in 2019-2020 before a head coaching stint in Windsor and then shifting to Calgary's bench last season.
Good PP with the Blues, terrible with Calgary. Clear as mud.
Quote from: Zee on May 17, 2024, 12:18:04 PMOK you guys have convinced me, let's just re-hire Keefe.
Hahaha, good one.

Quote from: Bender on May 16, 2024, 08:45:19 PMRangers moving on. Canes are slightly better Leafs of the Metro and Brindamour is sexy Keefe.

That first goal can't go in on Andersen.
2nd goal was the killer

Quote from: Bender on May 10, 2024, 08:37:48 AMMaybe I'm losing it here but I'm surprised that hit by Jamie Benn wasn't anything. If it was Kadri he'd have the book thrown at him.
Maybe but I doubt it. It was a good clean hit by Benn

Marner for Saros is a horrible return. I think that's really undervaluing Marner. Chucky, who is a better player got Hubey, Weegar, low level prospect and a late 1st. Marner should be able to get something similar.

While the cap hit is high, the 775k or whatever it is, isn't for a year. So Nash is saving 7.25M in real money for 16, plus Saros' contract which means overall Marner will cost them around 6M in cap space only and actual dollars savings at 12.25M.
Sounds like they're getting a great deal doesn't it?

Anyway if I'm trading with Nash, I'm trying to pry Askarov away from them. They won't do it but that's who I'd want or Saros plus.

Don't forget JT was matched to against the Pasta line in the playoffs.  His main job was defending and did a good job overall.

Quote from: herman on May 14, 2024, 10:29:11 AMQ is a non-starter considering his role in enabling the perpetration of sexual assault (twice!). There's no way an organization like MLSE with so many fingers in corporate sponsorships and a huge staff would say this is the right place for someone to work on a second chance. If Kyle Beach publicly absolves Quennville of wrongdoing, perhaps there is a conversation to be had with the NHL, but he's had plenty of time to do that if he felt it was right.

This isn't a matter of Q doing his time with a little suspension for a faux-pas and letting that get swept under the rug once no one is talking about it (again).
Dont know if this is his daughter or not but if it is, it appears Kyle has given his blessing..

Quote from: Highlander on May 13, 2024, 04:37:41 PMYa, Willie may grow into the new Sundin.
Thats pretty funny.

A right handed Swedish first round centre with a history of international tournament and Maple Leafs success, and a hairline trending towards the occipital lobe?
It'll be fun watching 88 go bald like Sundin and 34 lol.

Quote from: Joe on May 14, 2024, 08:50:09 AMI don't know how you fire Keefe and then say McLellan is the better choice?

Not that I put this all on a coach, but the guy who missed the playoffs twice with McDavid?

McDavid for half a season as a rookie and another year with garbage goaltending. Not sure I'd put much of that on McLellan. Not saying he's necessary the best choice, I just don't really look at his failures in Edmonton being on his coaching. He had some pretty miserable rosters to start with and young guys who hadn't quite hit their strides yet.

Sure. That's fair. But still, I'm not sure how you look at his record and Keefe and say 'ok this is an improvement'.

And for the record, I don't put that much stock in coaching. I really don't think a new coach is going to make a dramatic difference to this roster, as constructed at the moment.
I think any of the available coaches outside of Q are sideways moves. Brind'Amour, Cooper would be upgrades in the non available category.

Quote from: Bender on May 13, 2024, 08:37:40 AMIt is a bit wild that we have no idea what the standard of officiating is. I'm all for Fassthole hockey but how do we know where the line is and whether we'll get away with it or not?

Standard of officiating? This is the NHL! There is no such thing!

The only standard they recognize is that retaliatory actions get penalized harder in supplementary discipline. So just be the first to cause shit.
Seems to be the way unfortunately.

Quote from: CarltonTheBear on May 13, 2024, 10:07:57 AMGoing after Brind'Amour is going to be tricky. His contract doesn't expire until July 1st and I have to imagine Carolina will attempt to use that entire time to get him extended. Even if Rod publicly declares he won't be returning to Carolina it's not completely crazy to think Carolina wouldn't let him interview with other clubs until his contract is officially expired.

So do the Leafs (or any other team) decide to wait on hiring a coach until then they can talk to Rod and risk losing out on their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th options if they can't sign Brind'Amour?
If Rod isn't going back the Canes won't hold him back. They may not want him back if they go out in 5 to the Rags anyway. They'll be in their own rush to sign one of the available coaches as well before they're gone.
As for missing out on your 2nd, 3rd, they're sideways moves at best anyway IMO.
Going to be interesting if the Rags win tonight.
