SECOND favorite team? Whatever gave you that idea? 446th maybe.Better yet they aren't even in my top 6 favourite Canadian teams any more thanks to the return of the Jets.
Also signed Tim Conboy today.Give Murray a few days to figure out he signed Tim Conboy and not Tim Conolly.
Make note of what you were doing when you learned of the Conboy signing.

I love how they're going to go with "Player" on the back, so you can't pick out the one who really sucks. Maybe make them all use the same number, too.

It's still very funny the way the modern Senators pretend that they're in any way associated with an entirely different franchise of the same name from nearly a century ago.
Will you feel the same about Winnipeg doing it almost 2 decades later?

Sure. Although it's not like Winnipeg has much in the way of previous success to tie themselves to.
Aside from the two players from the Silver Seven era I don't see how they're tying themselves to any previous success in that banner.

So, aside from near a third of the banner you don't see how they're doing it? Fair enough.

That Sens logo, the "O" in the middle, could very well stand for "0" improvement! :o
Don't like it at all. The Senator with the bold look was much better. Also, the shoulder patches -- are those what look like police badges?? The Parliament buildings outline was far superior.

Yeah true, I can think of at least three off the top of my head.
No update on Regin's injury but a couple people suggesting it could be long term. Saw it up close and it certainly didn't look good.

Most mock drafts had him around 10 no? Not that huge of a leap.
11th-12th yeah, not that much of a leap no but he still flew under the radar.

I know! I'm not disputing that. I'm talking about how he flew under the radar of the media here in Ottawa.
For me, it wasn't so much the rankings as it was that during the months leading up to the draft, there was a handful of high end guys that were considered a step above the rest. Nugent-Hopkins, Landeskog, Huberdeau, Larsson, Couturier, Strome and Murphy have all had that high end, potential franchise player label slapped on them at times, and Zibanejad was always considered outside that elite group.
Obviously, players were drafted where they were for a reason, but after the year we had, I really wanted to swing for the fences. I like Zibanejad, but I still don't see the big offensive potential some of the others have, and point production up front is something we're still really hurting for in the prospect department.
There's a handful of guys that may be able to put up points in a supporting role, but there's no one we can pencil in as a cornerstone of the top line in the next few years.
Damn you, Craig Anderson.

The jig is up.
Design elements
The O logo on the front of the jersey and on the uniform pants pays homage to the O that was often emblazoned on the uniforms worn by the early Senators teams prior to leaving Ottawa in 1934.
Following championship seasons during the early days of the NHL, clubs would often adorn its sweater with a special crest to commemorate the achievement. The Senators' shoulder patch is designed with inspiration from the "World Champs 1926-1927" crest that was worn following the Senators' Stanley Cup win in 1927. The patches appear on both shoulders but the original 1927 text has been replaced with Ottawa Senators Senateurs d'Ottawa to acknowledge the team's bilingual fan base in the region.
The uniform features the club's official colours of black red and white, with the heritage jersey using an antique white that reflects uniforms of the past.
Fan involvement in design of the uniform concept
Prior to the 2007-08 season, the Senators unveiled home and road jerseys with a shoulder patch that featured the distinctive O logo used by the early Ottawa teams. Inspired by this history, Jacob Barrette, a Gatineau-based graphic designer and Sens fan, designed a jersey rooted in Senators history. Barrette posted this image of the jersey online to solicit feedback from fellow fans, with the results being overwhelmingly positive.
In 2009, Senators vice-president of marketing Jeff Kyle, aware of the fan reaction to Barrette's design, commissioned Barrette to help create the concept for the uniform. Barrette, along with the Senators and local hockey historian Paul Kitchen, conducted extensive research at Library and Archives Canada and the City of Ottawa to ensure the historical accuracy of the uniform's heritage elements. Barrette then presented design concepts to the Senators and Kitchen. After a number of revisions, they worked with Reebok to adapt the design to fit the Edge jersey, resulting in the uniform that was unveiled earlier today.

Sens' Konopka fights back
LONDON, ONT. - Senators pugilist Zenon Konopka delivered a roundhouse blow Tuesday to those predicting a sad-sack season in the nation’s capital.
The off-season, free-agent signing told the Sun that he doesn’t like people “trashing our team” and he believes the Senators will compete for a playoff spot.
“I thought we could compete when I signed the deal,” said Konopka. “After coming in here and meeting with everybody, I know we can compete. Sometimes things happen with injuries and stuff, but I know we can compete.”...MORE[/color (http://www.ottawasun.com/2011/10/04/sens-konopka-fights-back)

- Sens skated this morning and Rundblad looked to be the odd man out on Defence. Pairings included Phillips-Lee, Kuba-Karlsson and Cowen-Gonchar.
- Forward combinations were as follows, Michalek-Spezza-Filatov, Greening-Zibanejad-Alfredsson, Foligno-Smith-Neil, Condra-Konopka-Butler. Da Costa skated as the 13th forward.
- Peter Regin, Jesse Winchester and Matt Carkner were all absent at the skate this morning.

Given that alfredsson is aging those forwards look pretty bad -- as bad even as the leafs group tonight. How would you compare the teams?

So do the Sens, right now, but I'm looking forward to this season. Filatov, Da Costa, Greening, Butler, Zibanejad, Smith and Condra have all shown promise, and I'm excited about what they could develop into. I'm not booking my playoff tickets, though.

Ottawa has three big problems, as I see it. The Canadian dollar is going to start declining in value, the team's ticket sales are going to crater because they're clearly re-building, and Murray is, well, greasy. Listen, Quebec City is building an NHL arena and I bet its because they're getting Melnyk's franchise.
Leaf hater Konopka ready to rumble
DETROIT - Zenon Konopka and his knuckles will be ready for Saturday’s Round 1 of the Battle of Ontario.
The Senators centre tried to convince coach Paul MacLean he was ready to suit up for Friday night’s season opener in Detroit, but even being a healthy scratch didn’t dampen Konopka’s enthusiasm about facing the Leafs.
With Konopka troubled by a back issue that hampered his training camp, MacLean decided it wasn’t a good idea to put the centre into back-to-back games.
Konopka could have a sparring opponent Saturday — the Leafs will have Colton Orr in the lineup.
“We’ve talked about what I bring to the game and it’s going to be front and centre (Saturday) night,” said Konopka.
“I hated Toronto before I got to Ottawa. It helps that everybody in Ottawa hates Toronto as well....MORE (http://www.ottawasun.com/2011/10/07/leaf-hater-konopka-ready-to-rumble)

They have Matt Kassian, who fought Konopka in that game. But he's an AHL-level enforcer, so I'd say the theory still stands.
What a bizarre start for Filatov.

Konopka has message for lugheaded Leafs
http://www.torontosun.com/2011/10/12/konopka-has-message-for-lugheaded-leafs
Zenon Konopka doesn’t understand what the Toronto Maple Leafs don’t understand.
After Wednesday’s practice, Konopka was still shaking his head at comments from Leafs coach Ron Wilson and captain Dion Phaneuf, who wondered why Phaneuf would have to defend himself for his big, clean open-ice hit on diminuitive Senators centre Stephane Da Costa Saturday night.
After the bodycheck, Phaneuf was pursued by an angry Nick Foligno and later would have had to deal with Chris Neil had Luke Schenn not stepped in the way.
“(Phaneuf) doesn’t get it? He doesn’t get it? He doesn’t have to get it,” said Konopka, who has had two fights in two games as a Senator.
“He just has to know that if he makes a hit like that, he’s going to have to answer the bell. I don’t care if he gets it.”
Hey Sens fans, give this deadhead a hug next time you go to the game! :D

That guy is such a tool.
That guy is such a tool.
He's right. I don't understand why fans are so mystified and outraged when someone challenges an opponent after a hard, but clean, hit.
You know it's clean because you're watching on an HDTV from home with instant replay, slow motion and PVR. The players on the ice get to see it once, at full speed, with their attention on more than just the puck carrier, and their sight lines often obstructed by other players. They often just hear the crowd roar, and see a teammate lying prone on the ice with an opponent skating away.
And regardless, these players are there to win games and earn paycheques, not be classy and make friends. A teammate getting devastated by a hit, clean or not, is not good for your team. Momentum goes to the opposition, and you've got a player hurting. There are a couple ways to nullify that, the biggest being scoring a goal or beating the crap out of someone. Fighting is easier than scoring.
Then look at the players doing it. Nick Foligno and Chris Neil are roleplayers who aren't scoring. They need to do something to help their team, or they'll be in the doghouse.
You may not like it, but fighting after a hit happens for a reason.
What a bizarre start for Filatov.

Serious question: Do either of those Murray boys know what they are doing? I'll give Tim the benefit of the doubt but I seriously believe Brian is useless.
You don't have to like it, but it happens for a reason. I didn't see the comments made by Phaneuf/Wilson, but if they're acting confused about the whole affair, they're intentionally playing dumb. It's gamesmanship.
They can whine about it, but every team does it.

In his defence, that article is by Don Brennan. This is the guy that asked Matt Carkner if he felt responsible for Derek Boogaard's death. I doubt that statement came unprompted.
Zonopka is a bit of a meatball and yeah in terms of enforcing Carkner is still the man. Zonopka holds on for the ride.

Filatov got a hat trick last night. Don't get too comfortable, Winchester.
SP you watching?
SP you watching?
Yep. I think Spezza got boned. That was a goal.
Is that Rundblad's first point?
So yeah Craig Anderson.......Not so much.
Silver lining: Chuck still kicks ass, 9 points now, I think.
Also, I won on proline by betting against them.

He has been, but, so has just about every other player on the team not named Karlsson. Outside of one period against the Leafs, their entire team has been mostly invisible so far.

When you posted that, Anderson hadn't allowed a single goal.
Any further rumblings about Spezza wanting out?
It's pretty sad the inferiority complex they have. I doubt they constantly show the Sens score in Toronto. It's like a little jealous brother who has to say "na na" and point fingers at the older, cooler, more popular brother whenever they get a chance.

It's cute that you think of the Leafs that way. They're like the older, cooler, more popular brother who is 44 years old, dropped out of high school, lives with his parents and hangs out with kids half his age who only tolerate his presence because he always has weed.
The Sens are the loser younger brother that is too busy finishing med school to go out on the weekends.

I went to the Sens-Jets game last night. Every time the Bruins scored they flashed the score on the scoreboard to get a crowd reaction. Showed the score at least 4-5 times to get a fan "pop".
They showed kids in the stand with a "LEAFS SUCK" board. Got another fan reaction.
After the game while driving home listening to the post game on the Team 1200 they did the out of town scoreboard and yup, first up, "Bruins beat down the Leafs" (they were broadcasting live from one of the restaurants inside SBP)... they waited for the cheer. The commentator then said again, "come on guys, louder that that...the Leafs lost tonight!" and it got a louder cheer.

Didn't they sell "LEAFS SUCK" t-shirts at SBP or was that outside the arena?
Either way, the whole mentioning a third team that has nothing to do with the game being played that night seems pretty bush league to me.
I'd rather wait until next year.
Yeah, his trade value will likely be much lower, but I'd want to trade him as a rental and have the opportunity to bring him back in the summer (whether it be as a player or staff member). He's still got a year left on his contract after this one. Though, perhaps his recent injury troubles have him leaning towards retirement.
Regardless, if I was the GM, I'd ask him near the trade deadline if he wants to stay or move. If he'd prefer to stay, that would end the conversation right there. If he'd like one last shot at the cup, get him to supply a list of teams he'd like to play for, and try to put together the best deal available from those teams.
Sure, it would artificially lower his trade value, kind of like the Heatley situation, but he's Daniel Alfredsson. He's earned it.
Though, perhaps his recent injury troubles have him leaning towards retirement.
Though, perhaps his recent injury troubles have him leaning towards retirement.
If there's any truth to that and word spreads, that pretty much nukes his trade value. He's on a 35+ contract, and no one is going to trade for 2 months of him and almost $5M in dead cap space next season.
What a comeback!
What a comeback!
Steve "Jim Carey" Mason strikes again!
Spezza...11 pts in 8 games.
Kessel, Spezza, Michalek all top 5 in scoring so far this year - what's going on?

Sens ReCall Daugavins (http://www.senschirp.ca/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=468:sens-recall-daugavins&Itemid=13)
A bit surprising - thought Filatov would have been called up first.
Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-Zibanejad-Daugavins
Condra-Smith-Neil
Konopka-Da Costa-Winchester
It is hard to argue the sens boast a deep lineup filled with well-known names, isn't it?
What do you think happens with Zibanejad?
Today was his 9th game right?
No-one really knows whats going to happen with Zibanejad...
"I'm excited to go back home".
UHHH OHHHH!!!!!
It's too bad they can't send him to the AHL.

Congratulations. Your team has temporarily achieved averageness.
Well, almost. Due to 3-point games, it's still a little less than average... But it is very nice of you to be so supportive of our fellow fans.
Some excitement in Binghamton tonight.
In the third, Sestito takes a run at Filatov, elbows him in the head. Sestito gets tossed, and Lehner loses his crap, takes off his lid and jumps him, earning himself 4 minutes in penalties. Filatov is cut, gets taken off the ice by a trainer. It's confirmed to the media that he won't be returning. Apparently Filatov disagrees, refuses to stay in the locker room and returns to the game. Bingo goes on to win 4-2.

At this point in the season, being .500 is probably in the average range. It's early, might as well be generous. It's probably going to be a long year for Ferret and Sucker.
That elbow Alfie took was awful. Hard to believe Zonopka got 5 and a game for a rub-out and Wolski only get 2 for head hunting.
5 straight!

I take and I receive but you never hear me wishing injuries on any Leaf players.True - its a game and while we are all passionate fans of our team, we get no kicks from seeing anyone getting hurt. (I also think the whole booing Alfie thing is annoying).

If it's class that you are looking for then you should really look into a different team and a different captain.
I have no problem being glad that Alfie is out tonight. I see the Leafs as being ready for a "let down" game and the lack of Alfie means we are more likely to grab 2 points.
Yeah after tonight we start playing some decent teams - hopefully he's back soon.
It's unfortunate that 3rd goal significantly mars what could have been very much a feel-good win for Ottawa.
Crazy how the Sens went from a team looking every bit that of a lottery team with no hope for this season to a respectable team in a matter of weeks. Talk about night and day -- they looked hapless/pathetic to start the season.
Sens return Daugavins (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=379326)...maybe Alfie is good to go?

I read he only went down because he's having his wisdom teeth pulled, and that he'll be back whenever that's taken care of.
This looks like its going to be a shootout

Yeah, neither of these teams look particularly good on the defensive side of things tonight.
Both teams got a good hate on going though.

Well, they are both Northeast division teams. We've all got a good hate going for each other.
It is what it is. I'm anxious to see Sens / Habs. I predict a 15% decrease in Habs jerseys coupled with a 15% increase in Sens jerseys at home games if things remain the same. Fickle bastards.

The funny thing is that most of that 15% are the same people in different jerseys.
Surprise surprise, Tim Thomas beats us again. If anyone is going to shut down Spezza and Karlsson, it's gonna be Thomas and Chara.
Good to see Foligno, Da Costa and Butler figure in on the scoring. We're gonna need 'em. Also nice for Cowen to score his first.
Chara was awesome, why Ottawa let him go, I'll never know.
Filatov with Winchester and Kenopka?
Not really putting him in a position to succeed eh. So when he goes goal less just keep that in mind.
I'll be bummedifwhen he ends up back in Russia.

Hey Ferret, Lehner's on twitter.
I knew Chara wasn't the fastest skater, but thought he could just swing from the roof rafters.Chara was awesome, why Ottawa let him go, I'll never know.
Because Redden is better and Chara is too slow for the New NHL.

Could always change, but for now, been told by people that would know that Filatov/KHL rumour is BS. Also dismissed by Filatov himself.
Nikita Filatov said he can't talk about #KHL rumors. "No reason," he said. "Just rumors."
Up 3-0 after the first.
Feels like the good old days again.
Another good example in this game of why I think goalies are given too much freedom outside the crease.
Anderson sets a pick, Hall collides with him, Hall gets a penalty.

2. Ottawa Senators
Strengths:The Senators have top-end talent at every forward position, headlined by wingers Matt Puempel and Stefan Noesen, and center Mika Zibanejad. The organization possesses one of the best one-two punches on defense in physical stalwart Jared Cowen and puck-mover David Rundlad. There are also a deep group of players who can fill a variety of roles and provide depth at the NHL level including Stephane Da Costa, Jim O'Brien, and Bobby Butler.
Weaknesses: Robin Lenher is a quality goaltending prospect but there is no one behind him. Many of their mid-tier prospects such as Butler and Colin Greening are set to graduate this season and leave a hole in the prospect pool.

Didn't realize Stone leads the entire CHL in scoring.
I like that little prospect update thing, how long have they been doing that for?
Odd how the Pens have Kennedy on the first line with Crosby and Neal on the 3rd line with Staal. Seems like the complete opposite of what you'd expect. ???
Man, what did you guys do to Brian Elliott?
Man, what did you guys do to Brian Elliott?
I honestly forgot that was the same Elliot until a couple of weeks ago.
Da Costa sent down, Filatov up, and while be playing with either Spezza or Alfredsson.
Sounds like he's getting his chance, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing with Konopka before the end of the 1st.
EDIT: He'll start with Spezza and Greening.
EDIT2: And Tomas Kaberle is a healthy scratch. The next Wade Redden?
Paul MacLean said he had to yell at Zack Smith three times to get him to go out for PP in 3rd period. Smith wasn't expecting the call.
Who knew Zack Smith could score goals?
On pace for 21 goals, 44 points, while killing penalties, playing good D, and fighting occasionally. Maybe we've replaced Mike Fisher already?
From Ian Mendes;QuotePaul MacLean said he had to yell at Zack Smith three times to get him to go out for PP in 3rd period. Smith wasn't expecting the call.
EDIT: Tough break for Filatov, though. Took a skate to the face in the first, ended up with a broken nose, didn't return.
Ferret! This game blows!
Either the ice is awful, or both teams just suck.
They combined for 7 shots in the second period.
Best NHL name ever? Meet "The Klink" (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=381799).
Klinkhammer came from Chicago for a conditional 7th in the 2013 draft. The condition being he plays 5 NHL games for Ottawa.
Our current #15 is tied with our old #15 in goals.
Plus, our current #15 skates, hits, fights, plays defense and kills penalties.
Neil vs. Ovechkin.
Neil with a solid hit in the corner. Ovechkin pitchforks him in the gut skating up ice. Neil goes down and gets called for unsportsmanlike, no call on Ovechkin. Ovy says he's not that kind of player.
It looks like he was swinging his stick as part of his skating stride, but I think he knew exactly what he was doing. Just my opinion.

Huh.
You know, I've always been under the impression that "spearing" was a term used in reference to the shaft end of the stick rather than the blade end. Apparently, I've been wrong about that for quite some time, and the rules (62.1 (http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26354)) specifically reference the blade end only.

Well, that was a bizarre episode in Senators history. Wonder what kind of dirt will come out now.
Gotta be a reason why Filatov sat while Butler played on the top line.

Filatov interview with Puck Daddy:

He sure does know how to say the right things.
Why go back to the NHL? What's the point?
"What kind of a stupid question is that? The point is that the best league in the world is still there. I will be only 22 this summer. And I don't see any reasons to say that I have no chances to break through in the NHL. Everyone's career goes differently. Not always things come easy."
That's a nice response from Filatov.
Michalek with his league leading 19th...took a while but losing Heater is starting to sting less.
Michalek takes the league lead in goals, then promptly leaves the game with an upper body injury after colliding with Karlsson. Someone call Filatov.
EDIT: Also, I'd like to thank Bryan Burke for stealing Nazem Kadri from us.
How many OT winners does Kadri have again this year? :P
Michalek is fine apparently...
They still list Marc Savard? Is he not retired now?

Only in Ottawa would Kessel's ability to not run into his teammates be seen as a negative.
Does it bother you guys that TSN has the Canadian Junior squad selection, Skinner's concussion and Bolland insulting the sedins ahead of Michalek's concussion or is it just normal sens related stories don't get the lead spots?
If Kessel got a concussion, it would be the head line on TSN for sure.

This is a pretty big game for us...looks like no Chara for the Bruins. Pretty ballsy of Anderson to debut his new mask tonight - there is a chance we may never see it again after this one.

Go regulation finish!
When it's all said and done, a Boston regulation win is probably the best result for the Leafs. Better they fall further behind the Bruins than have a team behind them close the gap at all.
Plus, the Senators lose.
Well, yeah, but, I thought that was an obvious enough sentiment that it didn't need to be expressed overtly.
CUE THE COMEBACK
Also, Ottawa, you're trying way too hard to appear old-timey. You're a 90's expansion team. Embrace it.
Still don't understand the bizarre obsession you have with how other teams celebrate their history.

You know your career is taking a decided downwards trajectory when you're Russian and can't get a contract in the KHL.

Apparently it's because the Russian team wants to sign him to a multi-year deal while he just wants a contract 'til the end of this season.
If anything, it shows that he is determined to play in the NHL. Good on him and potentially good for the Sens.

Not a bad lineup. When Michalek comes back and if Turris becomes a legitimate top 6 player, that could be pretty dangerous.

And that defense looks a lot better right now than it did about a month ago.

Yeah...it's weird eh we almost look pretty solid. I have no idea where we're going to finish up, playoffs / outside playoffs, but I think it's clear we're not a bad enough to finish in the bottom 5 of the league. Are we "mini" going for it here?

Man, our wings look much less impressive with Michalek out.
Winger Milan Michalek, the club's leading scorer, could skate Tuesday after suffering a concussion a week ago.

Every hockey analyst I saw had the Sens finishing 14th or 15th in the conference this season. I'm thinking the new coach has something to do with their good play so far.

Maybe. They're really close to the Leafs in a lot of areas -
OTT is 30th in GA, 7th in GF, 24th in PK, 16th on PP.
Leafs are 26th GA, 8th in GF, 30th in PK, 2nd in PP.

You and me both.
I can't remember the exact number but the Leafs had something like 1 win in 14 games in Buffalo at some point last year. It doesn't make much sense. You would think even dumb luck they'd win a couple. And it's not as if the Sabres are or have been some super power or something. Buffalo and Toronto have been pretty similar for a while.
Anyways, I just don't get it.

To make it worse, Rundblad has matched Turris's offensive output.
After seeing the video, I'm okay with the decision. I would have just given Gaustad a boarding penalty, looked more like an accident to me, I don't think there was any intent on Gaustad's part. Gaustad got a little aggressive battling for the puck and it had unfortunate consequences.
I think 9/10 when that kind of thing happens there is no significant injury. Also, if the situations reversed and Winchester dumped Gaustad into the boards, and was suspended, I'd be upset about it.
The 39-year-old Alfredsson told the Ottawa Sun he’s talked with former Toronto superstar Mats Sundin and Detroit defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom to help decide when to hang up his skates.
Some surprising news out of practice this morning as apparently Peter Regin as re-injured his shoulder and is considering surgery. No timeline for his return but this is obviously a major setback for the forward.
Going with 7 D tonight, not enough bodies up front. Should have stuck around, Filatov.
Despite the zebras' best efforts, Sens win 4-3 in OT.
Turris has played two games, and has assisted on two game winning goals.

Looking back, Prince probably should have seen the writing on the wall after the Americans’ first pre-tournament exhibition game Tuesday against Russia, a 6-3 loss during which his line was on the ice for only seven shifts and had just one opportunity in eight U.S. power plays.
In the team’s second game on Wednesday against Switzerland, Prince was a healthy scratch.

“When we first arrived, we were all told we would be given fair opportunity,” Prince said. “Then I get six, maybe seven shifts. . . . And then when I didn’t play the next game, I felt maybe I had an idea of what was happening.
“If that’s fair opportunity, would somebody mind letting me know that? I really thought I could be a go-to guy on this team and I was never given that chance.”
Oh man, Shane Prince ripped team USA after getting cut.

I get the frustration, but ripping your national team is never a good idea. He'll be ineligible for the juniors next year, but those guys have long memories. It may come back to bite him if he's looking for the World Championships or Olympics some day.
Jesus, Ferret, what did we do to piss off the refs?
Foligno got tossed for "charging".
EDIT: And the Panthers tie it up on the 5:00 PP. Those refs better hope that doesn't affect the outcome.
EDIT2: Reviewing FLA goal for a kicking motion. $20 says it doesn't go our way.
EDIT3: Surprise, surprise. It counts.

Nah, both skates were on the ice at the point of impact. Ellerby went low, Foligno went in the air as a result of the collision.

Regin likely done for season (http://www.ottawasun.com/2011/12/22/regin-likely-done-for-season)
Peter Regin’s season is likely over.
The Senators centre wasn’t on the ice Thursday morning at Scotiabank Place after his surgically repaired left shoulder stiffened up and he’s going to have to decide whether he’s going to have another procedure to get it repaired.
Regin won’t be in the lineup against the Florida Panthers and he’s out indefinitely.
Winger Bobby Butler returns and defenceman Brian Lee will be in the lineup with the club carrying seven blueliners.
“It happened during the game (Tuesday) and it stiffened up on him,” said coach Paul MacLean Thursday.
“I think it’s very frustrating for Peter. For us, he’s an important player we think a lot of, but it’s devastating for him.
“He has to make the decision what’s best for him. I know (surgery) is one of the options.”
Regin originally suffered the shoulder injury last February.
He had surgery, took it easy in training camp and re-injured the shoulder in October. He missed 22 games and only returned Dec. 10 against the Vancouver Canucks.
The Senators were hopeful with the arrival of centre Kyle Turris from the Phoenix Coyotes, the club would have plenty of depth down the middle.
“We did enjoy the depth that Peter gave us on the third line for one game,” said MacLean.
Winger Milan Michalek (concussion) was on the ice with the team for the second straight day, but didn’t have any contact and won’t play until after Christmas.
He is expected to suit up Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens.

That entire province is going to implode if they don't start winning soon. Soo much off ice drama its ridiculous.
Yes a B.O.O. would be fun to see again. But it would be more fun for us on this side of the rivalry to see the Sens finish 9th. ;)
I know I can see that province from my window - the foothills of the Gatineaus are in a state of emergency right now. Flames as high as the sky.
There's a pub here in Ottawa for displaced Leaf fans called "The 9th Place". I'm pretty sure the Leafs own the territorial rights of 9th place in the Eastern Conference - we wouldn't want any legal problems with a team worth gazillions!
Cheese! ;D

He's an RFA this summer, what do you do? 21 points in 65 games over the past two seasons, with two season ending injuries.
He seems like a good kid, and shows flashes of potential every once in the while, but he hasn't done much to earn another contract.

In all honesty, there's a good chance the standings aren't what will hold the Sens back on trading Alfredsson - they could very well be a fair ways out of 8th by the deadline (though, I'll admit, it doesn't look like they will be, as they'll probably still be there with the bubble teams). It's the fact that he still has one more year on his contract, and it's a 35+ deal that will stop them, as it means they may not get the value they'd like for him.
ADD - The way the yield from last summer's draft is going there's less pressure to move any more bodies out for picks.

Well, just because there appears to be some prospect depth, doesn't mean you shouldn't add to and try to improve it, especially with the type of return Alfredsson could conceivably bring in. I expect they'll listen to offers for him over the next 18 months, but, I doubt they hear anything they really like until at least the summer - though, like you said, a deal is unlikely, considering his stance and Melnyk being Melnyk.

The Sens have won the last 3 games all while leading for a total of ZERO seconds in regulation.
How long can they keep up these comebacks? Down 3-0 to Calgary and win, and 2-0 to NJ in the 3rd period and win. They've been doing this all year.

In the back half of the season, when teams start to tighten up a lot more defensively, especially late in games, they won't be able to get away with it as much. They've been fortunate so far, but, I wouldn't expect it to last much longer. They'll have to start taking leads in regulation if they want to stay in the playoff hunt.

He's been that way most of the season. Looking more and more like another Flyers' goaltending mistake.
Karlsson was +5 tonight which puts him in the black for the first time in his career. I know projections are only that but this kid is on pace for a 74 point season...crazy.
Turris looks better every game too, 6 pts in 9 games since becoming a Sen, plus a decision over the mighty Danny Briere.

No, I do like him, but its tough to deny that he hasn't lived up to expectations. It says a lot about Ottawa's goaltending history that not letting in numerous deflating goals is a compliment.
I'm not too worried yet, I'll give him more than half a season before judging him, but his play is nowhere near what we saw at the end pf last season, and on a better team.
His GAA has dropped from 2.05 to 3.13, and his sv% has dropped from 0.939 to 0.902. Obviously, I didn't expect him to keep that up, but what we're getting now is unacceptable. In 18 games last year, he stole half a dozen games for us, don't think he's done that at all this season.
He's getting his wins, but I think its something of a Raycroftian illusion. We need to score 4 or 5 goals to get him the win, and its all because we have the best offensive defenseman since Paul Coffey.
I'm still on his team, he's gotten better since the beginning of the season, but Andy at the all star game is almost as ridiculous as Jim Reimer.

There's no way our d would be taking the chances they do and getting away with it if Anderson wasn't there to bail them out. Couple of other things to consider - we're dead last in SA <1370> 25th in TSH, he's 3rd in wins for goalies, Auld has been brutal - Anderson has played 38 out of the 43 games so far <36 starts 2 in relief>...for the first time in a while we're getting consistent / reliable goaltending.
But if you're not happy with it that's cool - but I will try and wear you down on it.
How many full games have you been able to watch this year?

Andy's facing a lot of shots, but he saw more in his short stint with us last season, and put up considerably better numbers behind a worse team. .902 is not good enough.
What area in the Sens' game has the most room for improvement, in your opinion? Consistently getting better goaltending I think is the biggest hurdle.
We're getting good coaching, producing offensively, and our power play is working. But we can't kill penalties or defend, and that's not all on our defensemen.
How is Ottawa's situation any more of a rebuild? They're still relying on a strong core of older players, not selling them off.

This isn't Gospel or anything but this is my take on why said players remained. Most of this is from what was being wriiten at the time of Murray going into rebuild mode and what Murray & some of the players were saying to the media:
Alfredsson has a NMC and didn't want to waive it so he could retire here. Also wanted to be a part of the rebuild.
Phillips he did have a NTC at the time but said the same thing - he wanted to be a part of the rebuild and retire a Sen.
Michalek was identified as being young enough to be a part of the rebuild
Spezza was identified as being young enough to be a part of the rebuild and by all accounts Spezza will be given the C when Alfredsson decides to retire.
Foligno was identified as being young enough to be a part of the rebuild.
Kuba & Gonchar were both untradeable at the time, if things go sour for us between now and the deadline you can bet both will be gone. Kuba is UFA after this season anyways and won't be retained.

Nothing of what you said there explains why Ottawa is rebuilding and Toronto hasn't been for the last 3+ years.
While I got you here TML Fan why don't you take a shot at explaining why you don't agree with me.

Because you haven't adequately explained your position. What exactly have the Leafs done differently that wouldn't constitute rebuilding?
Re-haul is the perfect word for what the Leafs did / are doing and rebuilding is what Ottawa is doing. So you can't really compare the two organizations in terms of where they are on any kind of ladder - both clubs are ultimately trying to achieve the same thing but both are going about it in different ways. Is this fair?

Maybe we need to go one more step back and see if we have the same definition of the term "rebuilding" when using it in the context of hockey.

I really hope Elliott gets a big cheer in Ottawa.
There seems to be quite a few Sens fans that boo former players for no reason. Who are these people who boo Hossa/Chara?

I've given this a bit more thought - if one of our guys is Captain <Alfie> I want him to pick Kessel first. What better Jedi mind trick is there?
It seems Craig Anderson didn't like the mean things I was saying about him. Is that 1 goal against in the 2 games since I labelled him a disappointment?
Also, Karlsson returns with 2 points and a +1 rating to go along with some manhandling of a forward who has 8 inches and 65 pounds on him.
The Jets are giving us their backup tonight, while Mr. 1st-Star-of-the-Week is starting for the good guys.
I'd assume that means Auld will be getting the Leafs.
Honest question.. how many times have the Sens beaten teams who started their backup goalie?
Noticed the last while that it seems its the backup the Sens draw on a lot of occasions, ie: last night.

Ferret is in denial that the Leafs are getting their #1 center back for the game. Also, Kessel and Lupul have been pointless in the last 3 games, that's like not giving meat to lions for a few days and then throwing them into a ring full of gazelles. Expect bloodshed tonight. Lupul/Kessel with 3 points each.

I just seen a clip, but it seemed a bit excessive, no?

Fine! You win! Okay?! I take it back!
His save percentage has climbed up to .910, he's slowly getting back to respectable numbers. Although, with the shots and chances the Sens give up, I don't see his GAA impressing anyone any time soon.
Murray saying Regin's done for the year. You're still re-signing him, Ferret?
I think I heard somewhere that Auld was going to start against the Sharks. You know anything about that?
He's gonna have to start playing sometime, Anderson's the busiest goalie in the league.
We just keep chugging....4th!
We just keep chugging....4th!
How many weak goals did the opposing goaltenders let in that game? McLean has really figured out how to make opposing goalies whiff on long wrist shots this season, that's something that you can only point to coaching. I doubt Anderson had to be very good as well.
TROLL
Did you see Daug after the Spezza goal against the Leafs? Every time he scores (or thinks he scores), he skates by the Sens bench while barking like a dog. I love that guy.
Da Costa called up because of the injuries, but it sounds like Daugavins and Smith are fine, and will play tomorrow. Anderson to start again. Auld still hasn't played this month, I guess we're just gonna ride Anderson's hot streak.
Bob Murray decided to badger the ferret and call up Mark Bell for Saturday's game.
It will be interesting to see what bearing the Goligoski deal will have on Karlsson's contract talks / numbers. I really hope we go for one of those 18 year / 120 M deals with Karlsson- it's the way to go in these new days of the NHL.
How's the canal looking?

I don't get it either, but there's gotta be something there. Some kind of loophole or precedent.
You don't get as rich as Melnyk by wasting money pursuing frivolous lawsuits.
In other Melnyk news, he admitted on the radio today that he spoke with Murray about having Lehner play a few games this season.
You just sign the cheques, Uncle Moneybags. Leave the hockey decisions to the people you pay to know hockey.

I don't know, sometimes you do. I imagine this is more to prove a point and challenge the system than anything with any sort of precedent or anything. I don't imagine this well turn out in Melnyk's favour.

You can chirp us when you beat us / pass us in the standings. Until then Turris is going top shelf on Reimer all year.

No Peel or O'Rourke tonight, Ferret. I'm guaranteeing a win.
EDIT: Wait, can I take that back? Jim O'Brien's been recalled, seems Spezza may not be ready to go after all.
We're getting owned by the Islanders. This is the team everyone was expecting to see all season. Do something, Paulrus.
Not good. Playoffs are gonna be a distant memory within a few weeks if they don't get their crap together.
Did you manage to watch the whole game without falling asleep, Ferret?

Well - aside from the start of the year this is the first real adversity we've faced...let's see what we're made of.
No offense, but losing 4 or 5 was the "first real adversity they faced."
Going into the Leafs game they were facing adversity... the Leafs just compounded it. HNIC, at home, facing your rivals, having lost 5 in a row... thats some adversity. And they layed an egg.
Like you said earlier though, they have a lot going wrong right now, so some of that will change. They'll turn it around but they have St. Louis and Nashville next so it won't be easy.
Auld is starting. Let's try to lose by two goals or less.
- 3 out of 4 possible points in the past 2 is a little more like it
- 3 out of 4 possible points in the past 2 is a little more like it
But we also have 1 win in our last 9, and have earned 4 of a possible 18 points through that span. They need to make a big change, and soon, or we'll be pulling a Toronto and wasting an entire year by finishing 9th.

And miraculously we're still in 7th and ahead of said Leafs. I agree with you - we've been sputtering bad but if we finish 9th so be it - we can't have it both ways. What kind of big move are you thinking?

I don't mean a trade or anything. I just meant they have to turn up the good and turn down the suck. They've had the suck knob cranked all the way up to 10 for a while.
The only thing I want to do at the trade deadline is dump Chris Neil for a pick. He's terrible at hockey.
Over the last 20 or so games, Chris Neil has really begun to irritate the crap out of me.
All he ever does when he's on the ice is give up the puck. He fumbles it, he misses passes, he passes to the other team. I can't figure out why he plays every game (and gets power play time ffs) while Zenon Konopka is a healthy scratch. At least Konopka wins faceoffs, I can't think of a single thing Neil does better than him.
Neil was outchanced 8-1. When he wasn't on, Sens outchanced Blues 18-5.
Granted, but I think that would be a lot closer if Konopka got the ice time with the linemates and the regular PP time that Neil gets.
EDIT: I can't find the tweet now, but someone wrote after the Blues game (I think) that we outchanced the Blues when Neil was on the bench, but when he hit the ice, we got heavily outchanced. Just confirmed my suspicions that Neil takes everything good and turns it to crap.
EDIT2:Quote from: @sens_adnanNeil was outchanced 8-1. When he wasn't on, Sens outchanced Blues 18-5.
Oh, Konopka's pretty much useless too, but he does at least win faceoffs, doesn't make as many brutal giveaways, and does it at one third the price.
Gonchar hasn't been very good, but on defense I think Cowen has been struggling the most. When Kuba and Gonchar were out, he was playing 26+ minutes a night with Karlsson on the top pairing and playing like he belonged there. Since they came back though, he's gradually gotten worse. Now he's playing half that time from the third pairing.
We know how good he can be, he's just gotta get his head straight. He's been consistently making some awful decisions in his own zone over the course of this slump.
Robin Lehner got screeched in last night. Here's a pic of him kissing a cod. You can thank St. John's IceCap Carl Klingberg for the masterful camerawork.

Thanks for ruining my Hockey Pools ticket Ottawa! >:(
As retaliation I am going to burn my Norm McIver rookie card...
With 7 points in 2 games, Jason Spezza is now alone at 2nd in league scoring.
4 points and a +4 this afternoon for the best blueliner in hockey. No big deal.

I hope he handles Karlsson's contract negotiations.
Hmmm....looks like a possible double snub from OV - prolly better to rest up for Manson's stretch drive anyways... :p
Has Ottawa decided where they are going to put the Karlsson statue yet?
He'll look good on Boston.

How's Lehner been doing in the A? I'd imagine he'd get the reigns if Anderson went down for an extended period of time.

Aw c'mon, you can't expect a Leaf fan to watch a WHOLE Sens clip now can you? ;)
Besides, we have more important things to do, like watch clips of our team lose the 8th playoff spot.
I'm a lifelong Leaf fan, but it would be bad if this is a serious injury and derails Ottawa's playoff run. It's always cool to see a team do well when everybody had them rated at the bottom of the league. Let's hope Lehner plays well (because I have no faith in Auld).
Kelly Chase tweeted earlier today that Ottawa had been making calls looking for a goalie. I assume it may be Bishop with Chase's Blues connections???
Are you suggesting the attention span of a Leaf fan is 41 seconds? :D
I think I'd rather Murray go with Lehner over finding some short-term scrub. I'm anxious to see where Lehner is at with his game..

Yeah, I don't want short term anything, regardless of the consequences.
Some rough timing for Murray. He gets two games to decide whether or not he needs to make a move to preserve our playoff chances before the deadline.
I'd guess Auld gets Boston, Lehner gets the Isles, and depending on how those games go we may see a new goalie in an Ottawa sweater come the deadline. I just hope it's a guy who may have a future with us past this spring. I want nothing to do with Nabokov.
No, just speculating.
I'd rather give the kid a bottom feeder in the Isles than throw him to the wolves against the defending champs.
Who cares if Auld's confidence takes a hit by getting lit up.
Murray said Andy cut a tendon in his right hand, could be on ice next week, will be "much less" than 8 weeks, but no timetable for return.

To the question if he would return to Sweden next season if he got sent to the AHL he answered, "No, my goal is to play in the NHL, if Ottawa thinks I need time in the AHL to reach that goal, thats what I'll do."
Here's something to cheer you up.

I'm listening on the radio, did Neil really just beat Chara in a fight? The guys on the Team are in ecstasy.
Auld needs to be better than that - two of the first three goals were saveable.
Again Neil gets the rally going though we just came up short. I have a feeling the Sens & Bs are on a crash course to playing each other in the playoffs...I hope I'm wrong.
Alfie with 22 now..(!)
Well that wasn't nearly as one sided as I expected ("NEIL'S GOT HIS HELMET OFF! OH MY!!!"), but credit to Neil for hanging in there with that beast.

League sources say Senators closing in on deal for Ben Bishop from STL Blues. Could be done today. #Sens #SNTrade

Yeah - with Lehner up if we're pooched if one of Auld or Lehner get hurt. I predict it's Wiercioch going back...

I think you forget who your GM is. It's clearly a 1st round pick going the other way.

Karlsson.
While former Senators goalie-turned-RDS broadcaster Patrick Lalime was ready, willing and able to sign with GM Bryan Murray
Lol, what?
Oh Jesus, we're gonna be missing Spezza for a long time.
EDIT: Geez, he's back on the bench. Would not have guessed that, judging by his reaction.
EDIT: And he scores seconds into his first shift back. Unreal.
He took a slapshot off his lower leg, then rushed off the ice without putting any weight on it. The way he left the ice made it seem like he was panicking with pain, usually when you see that, it's a bad injury.
SP remember when you were foo-fooing Neil a few weeks ago?
Watching some of this game, would kill for a goalie performance like the Lehner one.
Have liked him since watching him in the Sault.

It isn't often that the goalie who got a shutout is the second best goalie on the ice, but Tim Thomas is just unbelievable. Should have had 4 or 5 goals tonight.
EDIT: Figures Sportsnet has him as the third star.
Going to Sens / Hawks this Friday - Wisers Box!

I hope so... From what I know about it it seems as much a friendly Canada/hockey place as much as it isy a Senators place so we'll see how it goes. Besides, no Sens game tomorrow night, right? Maybe a couple folks will feel sorry for me. :)

Thanks man. You know, it's sad. I work for a friggin' airline and haven't been on a plane since 2009. This is looooong overdue. Anyway, I'm sure you and SP will enter my thoughts tomorrow among all that red & black. I'll raise a glass to ya both!
Aside from losing that was a great game to watch. Emery & Lehner both stood on their heads.

I was at the game, great pace.
Question though, do they always do the "Leafs suck" kind of cheer during the few songs in stoppages? I'd get it if they were playing the Leafs, but I don't know, it was kinda weird given, well, they weren't.
A financial dilemma for the Senators...?
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/story/2012/03/01/sp-nhl-senators-liberals-tax-break.html
The cash-strapped government wants to put an end to a policy that allows businesses to write off up to 50 per cent of all tickets and luxury suites for sporting events and is asking the federal Conservatives to help.
The tax writeoff also applies to other live performances like theatre and concerts and costs the province about $15 million a year.
But the Senators, which operate in a smaller market than the Maple Leafs, can't survive without the tax deduction, said team president Cyril Leeder.
"We have a sizable portion of our operation that's run based on corporate support for suites and for tickets,"
"So if we had a 10 per cent to 20 per cent loss of that business, we would be out of business."
Corporations lease 120 of the 150 luxury suites at Ottawa's Scotiabank Place, he said. About half of their season ticket holders — who take up 11,000 of the arena's 19,000 seats — are businesses.
And there's no waiting
