I loathe everything about the Coyotes franchise.  What a joke.

The more I think about the whole thing, the more I believe Rielly will definitely get a bit of a break, but the book won't be thrown at him.  3 or 4 games.

Quote from: Chris on February 11, 2024, 03:10:48 PMI find myself wondering if Rielly hadn't gone after Grieg, would any other Leaf who was on the ice have done anything, or would they all have just skated meekly back to the bench. That is a bigger concern to me than how many games Rielly gets.

This is why I had no issues with Rielly's response.  The crosscheck to the head was reckless, but it's nice that someone showed a pulse out there.

Once I saw Greig wind up I was awaiting for someone to take issue with it.

Greig should have at least braced himself for some sort of contact to be initiated after a play like that.  You don't hammer a puck in the net with 5 seconds left and expect to get back to the bench without some altercation.

Rielly's crossheck to the head was reckless, but going after Greig had to happen (like I said above, a lower crosscheck or hit into the boards).

Imagine the team let something like that go with no response.  They'd continue to live up to their reputation of being a bunch of wimps.

Quote from: Peter D. on February 10, 2024, 09:43:32 PMI think a lot of the "codes" in sport are stupid.  But showing up your opponent is something I would never condone.  Slide that in and celebrate your goal and win.

I'm perfectly fine with that heat-of-the-moment decision by Rielly. He deserves a suspension for that and will get one, but it's about damn time someone had some bite and just doesn't roll over.

I was gonna say in the heat of the moment he probably wasn't thinking about code. He was thinking Frig that guy for disrespecting me and my team.

He had a lapse of judgement.  Crosscheck him in the kidneys or drill him with a check into the boards.

The intent was fine.  The execution was poor.

NHL Transactions / Re: 2023-24 General Trades & Signings

This trade is a reminder that the Leafs recently gave up a 1st rounder for a 33-year old Nick Foligno who was a pending UFA and had scored a whopping 16 points in 42 games. *puke*

An overpayment for Winnipeg, sure, but that's the price to pay when you are looking to load up for a Cup run in a seller's market.  At least Monahan's age and numbers this season are much more favourable.

No brainer deal for the Canucks.  Will look even better if this rejuvenates Lindholm.

Pretty crazy to think in a matter of a couple years the Flames have seen removed from their roster each of the three players that made up their top line, which was considered one of, if not the best in the league.

What a coincidence these indefinite personal leave of absences from the last couple of days are.  Not.

Bless his heart, as he has done more than an adequate job being thrust as the starter while being the third stringer, but the Jones Cinderella story has struck midnight.

Here's hoping the team can keep afloat from now until the All-Star Break, and hopefully still in a playoff position, at which time Woll will *hopefully* be close to returning.

Leafs on their heels again holding a lead.  At least the last couple shifts they pushed back a bit.  Hope they finish strong here.

Did that hand pass challenge just save Keefe's job? LOL

Quote from: Bender on January 18, 2024, 10:44:52 PMSo you can kick the puck and have it deflect off another player??

In this case, the puck wouldn't have gone in had Liljgren not touched it.  I think that was the right call as he played it.

Don't see any reason why the Leafs can't win this game in convincing fashion.  5-2 Leafs.

I actually didn't mind the signings of the first three.  As much as Domi and Bertuzzi are the two players I hate most in the league, I thought not being tied to them on more than a 1-year, "show me" deal was fair value.  I thought they would bring an element that was missing.  They've shown some glimpses, but way too inconsistent.  Even still, I'm not lamenting the loss of Bunting or Kerfoot as a result of it.

Treliving got caught with his pants down on the Reaves signing.  We know why he went after him, the whole toughness factor, especially after the way the team flaked out in the playoffs last spring.  Thing is, with the way the game is these days, guys like Reaves are a waste of space.  Intimidation means nothing, he's not skilled enough, and he doesn't possess the abilities like a Perry or Maroon do that can hybrid a bit of both.  The quicker his contract gets buried, the better.

Beyond that, the holdovers from years past I find are a bigger reason for the team's spotty/poor play.  People thought Samsonov was going to trend to being a top 10 goalie again; while I was skeptical he'd be good enough, no one expected him completely flaming out Jack Campbell style.  Giordano is a fossil (in hockey terms) and is showing his age.  Brodie, like Muzzin before him, is having the mileage catch up.  And we cannot underestimate how our young guys of the future -- Knies and Robertson -- aren't contributing much.  Both were seen as top 6 guys, and while showing glimpses of it here and there (mostly Knies), they aren't reliable enough in their roles.  In hindsight, the team has done a piss poor job at drafting and developing in recent years.  Heck, we don't even have a guy in-house who can play a 4th line role instead of having to find a bunch of retreads year over year on the free agent scrap heap.
