Game Notes

MTL
•Allen (11-11-4, 2.62 GAA, .909 Sv%) will likely start for the Canadiens
•Danault left Thursday's game with an injury in the first period. He was to be evaluated today but so far no update on his status for Saturday's game

TOR
•Campbell (16-2-2, 2.11 GAA, .924 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Brooks will come back in for Noesen, while Hutton will take Sandin's spot on the blue line. Keefe wanted everyone to know that Sandin coming out was primarily due to cap reasons
•This will be the final regular season game against the Habs. The Leafs have a 6-2-1 record against them so far and while it's a little less certain than it was a week or two ago it's still likely they'll face Montreal in the 1st round of the playoffs

I missed the last thread. Who is Noesen? Where did he come from. It is rare that a guy appears in the Leafs lineup I’ve never ever heard of ...

He's a former 1st round pick(all the way back in 2011) that the Leafs acquired in the Foligno deal from San Jose. He's been a fringe NHL'er/AHLer who's bounced around a bit.

A throw-in with Foligno.  Former first-rounder, never really made it.

I think they ought to start Rittich, not Campbell.  Why take chances with another injury?

This post tracks the season’s moves in somewhat simplistic fashion.

Or better yet: Capfriendly’s trade history tab

Fun: Foligno and Noesen were both former sens first round picks.

Most of the Leafs roster are former first rounders, or end of the draft, or outside the draft completely. 2nd-3rd rounders tend to be trade capital.

1st: Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Thornton, Spezza, Foligno, Noesen, Galchenyuk, Nash, Rielly, Bogosian, Sandin, Liljegren, Campbell

2-3: Simmonds, Dermott, Robertson, Holl, Andersen, Hutchinson

4-7: Hyman, Kerfoot, Engvall, Brooks, Muzzin, Brodie, Hutton

Undrafted: Mikheyev, Rittich

Montreal's missing quite a few guys, a bit hard to get a sense of how good they can be really but here's hoping we put them away.

Leafs need a singe point to secure first place in their division.

Even when they are healthy, Montreal is the kind of team build that takes the media's belief that goaltending and depth wins playoffs to the nth degree (forgetting about the scoring talent bit). Their team is goaltender (Price) + a lot of depth/average NHLers. If they can shutdown another team's star scorers for a bit and lean on their goalie to make some extra saves, they can be a handful and an annoying out but it's hard to say they're ever going to be a long drive threat with this type of roster.

In fairness to that Columbus knocked out Tampa and the Leafs with that model.  It’s still one that can give teams fits if the goaltender stands on its head.  Gallagher is really an underrated player too.  Earlier in the year he was second in even strength goals over the last two seasons in the NHL

Season’s almost over, and without their dominance of Vancouver, they’re a sub .500 team. In a normal season, they’d be nowhere near a playoff spot.

OTOH the Leafs could be pointed to as an example of a team that looks like it should go deep but doesn't because of sketchy goaltending and other issues.  It looks like Dubas has made a credible attempt to fix the latter, and even the former to the extent of getting a decent backup in Campbell.  But until they can prove they can win a round ...

These games have been really tame given we are probably playing each other in the postseason.
