No Tavares.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/kadri-stamkos-guentzel-terry-added-star-game-rosters/

I don't really have a problem with this, Stamkos is legitimately more deserving based off the seasons they're having, but I've always thought it was interesting that for as massive as the Leafs fanbase as a whole is it never really seems to get super involved in these fan vote things.

There’s a much bigger talent gap in the East than there is in the West, so the overall league standings are a bit misleading.

The gap between the 8th place team and 9th place team in the East is pretty nuts. Right now 8th is on pace for 107 points. 9th place, Detroit of all teams, is on pace for just 83 points. Every other team in the East is below .500. I know generally speaking it's believed teams in playoff positions by this point of the season make it there, but I doubt we've seen a gap that large in a very, very long time.

In the West there's 6 teams that the 8 place team in the East would either be tied or beating in points percentage. Both the Wild Card teams in the East would be leading the Pacific division in points percentage. The current pace to make the playoffs in the West right now is 96 points, and there's still 4 teams on the outside that have a realistic chance of taking that spot.

So yeah barring the league just going a basic 1-16 league wide playoff format every team in the East is going to have a super tough road to the Finals.

Game Notes

TOR
•Campbell (18-5-3, 2.02 GAA, .935 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•The Leafs got some good news as Marner and Engvall exited the COVID-19 protocol and joined the team at practice. They both took their usual spots at practice so it seems like they'll be ready to play
•The bad news was that Ritchie, Kase, and Holl entered the protocol so the dream of having a full line-up for the first time thie season once again escapes us

STL
•Binnington (11-7-3, 2.90 GAA, .910 Sv%) will likely start for the Blues
•St. Louis is 10-2-1 in their last 13 games but have been hit with a number of COVID-19 cases in the past week or so. That includes their 2nd and 3rd highest scoring forwards (Buchnevich and Tarasenko) as well as their #1 defenceman (Parayko)
•A couple of those Blues have been on the protocol list for a little over week now, including Tarasenko, so it's possible they could receive clearance to play
•With several veterans out of the line-up two of St. Louis' younger stars, Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas, wore the 'A' patch on their jerseys in their last game. Kyrou leads the team in scoring with 37 points in 33 games, while Thomas is not too far behind with 28 points in 30 games. Unless you want your day to be absolutely ruined I beg you: DO NOT check where these two players were taken in their draft years and then glance up 3-4 spots

That's got to be most of the team by now, right?

Matthews*, Bunting, and Clifford** are the only players on the roster now who haven't been placed in protocol in the last month. Possibly some of the Marlies on the Taxi Squad as well but I know they had a ton of positives down there too earlier.

*had a false positive

**had it in early November when he was with the Blues

Nazem Kadri, 4th in league scoring, 2nd in scoring per game, on pace for 131 points this season... not invited to the All-Star Game.

Also, pretty good time for Kadri to become a free agent this summer eh.

•This will be Mrazek's first game in 32 days

ARI
•Vejmelka (3-13-1, 3.30 GAA, .904 Sv%) will likely start for the Coyotes
•In case you couldn't tell from their roster... the Coyotes are bad. They have a .258 points percentage and are on pace for just 42 points this season. For some context, in the Tank-For-McDavid season Buffalo finished last with 54 points
•Checking in on some former Leafs... Kessel has 23 points in 33 games this season but only 5 goals. Boyd has a very respectable 16 points in 25 games. Gachenyuk, who started the season on the IR and then missed some time due to COVID, has 0 goals and 3 points in 15 games. Riley Nash also recently joined the team after being claimed off waivers by Tampa who claimed him off waivers from Winnipeg earlier in the season

•Lehner (15-10-0, 2.92 GAA, .906 Sv%) will likely start for the Golden Knights
•This won't impact Tuesday's game of course but it's expected that Jack Eichel will practice with the Knights for the first time this week
•Vegas was missing a few forwards at practice for undisclosed reasons so there's a chance we could see former Leafs Amadio and Brooks. Amadio has 6 points in 20 games with Vegas this season while Brooks has 2 points in just 7 games

Some higher power out there absolutely does not want Mrazek to play again.

13
Speaking of Mrazek, I'm assuming he gets a start out west this week, right?

Keefe already said he'll get a start in the B2B, probably against Arizona. But it sure sounds like they plan on playing Campbell as much as humanly possible, which regardless of how well he's been this season doesn't seem like the best idea.

14
It won't change peoples thoughts on the trade, which is understandable, but at least Kerfoot's having a solid season. 24 points in 33 games, on pace for 59 points. 20 of those points are at 5-on-5 (virtually zero PP time), which is a pretty crazy ratio. He's currently 2nd on the team in 5-on-5 points, just 1 behind Tavares. Also one of the teams top penalty killers.

He's on a bit of a bender right now with 8 points in his last 3 games so those offensive stats a bit boosted because of that. I doubt he hits 60 points and he'll certainly get passed by at least a couple players in 5-on-5 scoring by the end of the season, but he's still been a solid complimentary player for the top-6.
