We can retain his rights if he is given qualifying offer
Liked SDA. Too bad it didn't workout for him.  He's got some good hands on him and I always hoped he and Robertson would play together on the Leafs one day.

Quote from: OldTimeHockey on Yesterday at 12:20:48 PMWhile the statements by Dubas during his press conference are pointed to as items that swayed the Leafs and Shanahan to move in another direction, I think what the press conference actually did was connect the dots on why Dubas was throwing water bottles, arguing with fans and overall seeming a little unhinged during the playoffs.
Heard an interview with Burke and this was mentioned. His response was basically I'd be right there with him lol.

Quote from: bustaheims on June 01, 2023, 01:30:37 PMI can also see why it could be difficult to fire Keefe after what was the team's most successful season in almost two decades.
Add to that, Keefe/Dubas have 3 of the top 4 winning percentages in Leafs history. He's a very good coach and I think he'll change the style slightly.

Good on Kyle and I wish him nothing but the best. I've said it before, he's a quality human being first and foremost and I like the direction he's taken the Leafs. It's really too bad they couldn't get over the hump.

Quote from: Bender on June 01, 2023, 10:21:23 AMNot a shock at all. I had a hunch he was angling for either a President and GM or President role, especially in Pitt as there was already a ton of reporting on that, based on the "streamline" tactic in Toronto, and this all but confirms that Kyle knew he had this in his back pocket.

Good for him, but his presser still makes me laugh.
Doesn't confirm anything. Saw a Burke interview a few days ago and someone mentioned he had a deal in place. Burke basically said no he may have known about interest but no way a deal would be in place.

Quote from: L K on May 30, 2023, 09:10:36 AMI'd do that trade...although I would wonder what kind of number Hellebyuck is looking for in his next contract.
It'll probably be less then Nylander

Quote from: azzurri63 on May 28, 2023, 10:10:46 AMFor a player with a big question mark as far as elevating his game in the playoffs why do we have to pay him more than McD or MacK?

Because that is how finances work in sports.  Look at the NFL.  There is no better QB in the game than Mahomes, but every year, the QB that is up for renewal makes more, because inflation exists.

It's not about whose better when it gets to the financial situation.  This is their job.  I could see a comment from Matthews like "Hey you have to pay me more because I have to put up with unknown people saying derogatory things about me and questioning my desire to play this game on a nightly basis".
Yup he has to raise the bar to keep the NHLPA happy as well. MacKinnon isn't worth more then McD but he's an elite forward and needed to go above him.

Quote from: Bill33 on May 26, 2023, 02:02:05 PMAny judgement call late in a close game that would result in a mandatory penalty shot will simply result in the bar raised even higher than it is now.
Yup, they wouldn't call anything.

At least he has the same glasses

Good article. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know if I came away from that feeling better about Treliving as a candidate or worse though. Lol.
Worse foe me but that goes for whoever is out there. I think they let the best guy go.

Quote from: Bullfrog on May 25, 2023, 07:50:46 PMI don't care who; just sign Marner to an 8-year contract please.
You means Matthews? Marner isn't eligible until July 1 2024.

Dallas will go to game 5.

Quote from: L K on May 25, 2023, 01:47:24 PMI still would like to see penalties matter late in a game.  If you take a delay of game or crosschecking penalty with 40 seconds left in a 1 goal game, there is potentially incentive to take a late penalty to kill momentum and not leave enough time to get the PP set up.  If there is PK time left on the clock in a 1 or 2 goal game I'd like to see the PP carry over for the full amount.
Carry over to where? You talking about extending the game until the penalty would expire?

QuoteShanahan went from wanting to bring Dubas back to firing him in a matter of days. And then offered his version of events in a press conference that left people inside the organization confused and upset.

Jason Spezza resigned before that press conference even began. The popular former Leaf who retired into a role with the front office after the 2021-22 season has declined to address the matter any further than that. That was intentional. Spezza wanted his actions to do the talking.

[...]

After a 19-year playing career in the NHL, in which he earned an estimated $90 million, according to CapFriendly, Spezza could afford to walk away. Others who felt the same, who were inclined to follow their leader out the door, couldn't given they lacked that same sense of financial security.

It's security they have because of Dubas.

Though he wasn't offered an extension himself, not until after the trade deadline, Dubas fought to extend staff members who entered last season with expiring contracts. He got them extended with one, two, and three-year deals.

At least one staff member was inclined to ride things out with Dubas for an uncertain year. Dubas insisted — take the security, protect your family.

"Don't worry about me," he told his people. "I'll be OK."
Sounds like a pretty amazing boss. There are so many stories of what an absolute amazing human being Dubas is and how he treated everyone. We don't get the behind the scenes look but I'll always remember Dubas for 2 things. Staying with Mikheyev in Jersey and him running down the stairs on the phone when Tavares got hurt. The guy cares for people. The Leafs lost a great person.

I think this is part of why losing him sucked so much.  He's a nice guy and I really like the setup of our front office over this.  Contrast that to the team that gets Bedard this year (or our organization under Ballard) and it was just nice not having to worry about our front office doing something stupid.

When Fletcher had his melt-down over the Muskoka 5 and was disrespecting Mats it really ticked me off.  Dubas standing by our players through their playoff struggles mattered to me from a GM perspective.  I hope whoever replaces him can at least keep some of those elements in place.
Couldn't agree more. I really hated how they treated Mats at the end. Guy played his heart out for the Leafs and then because he wouldn't waive his no trade they didn't treat him so nice.
