Quote from: CarltonTheBear on May 23, 2023, 08:52:31 AMI could somewhat understand the concern levels if Dubas like took his entire family on a 2-week vacation to Costa Rica to ponder his future or something, but the dude was back in the office working on Wednesday. That comment was way overblown.

It's just another example of how the fanbase creates problems for itself. Fans pay way too much attention to clean out the locker room day so if something is said that upsets them it's attached significance because they care so much about clean out the locker room day. Why would anyone care what gets said on that day if it doesn't then conform to anything that actually happens?

If I could be a relatively informed fan without knowing the GM's name it would make no difference to me. I'm a fan of the hockey team, not the corporate structure.

I'm not even a fan of the team.  I just love this forum, so I watch them so I can contribute.

I hear you.  Not many hockey sites got people quoting John Maynard Keynes — and it's relevant, too, not just name-dropping to demonstrate you went to college.
Who is John Maynard Keynes?

Quote from: CarltonTheBear on May 22, 2023, 09:45:01 AMThere's no two ways about it, the odds of Matthews (and Nylander) extending their contracts this summer decreased with the Dubas firing.

I don't know how you can be so sure until we see who the replacement is.

I don't think its about the new hire, he/she will not receive autonomy either. The problem has and always be the corporate culture that has enveloped the Leafs since Conn croaked.  Dubas should have been given a two year deal with autonomy to see if he was the wonder kin he seemed to be. What a concept, I have completely reversed my opinion of Shanahan.  What a carnival sideshow.

Quote from: Bender on May 19, 2023, 04:55:17 PMSpezza resigned... that stings.
No it speaks volumes to how Spezza feels Dubas has been treated here. That's what it says to me. Word on the street is he gave them the dbl fingers on the way out. This is a horrible look for Shanny and the Leafs.

Yeah I can't help but agree. There's a path here for Shanahan to be another villan in Leafs land. He better know wtf he's doing here, but it sure doesn't look like it.
And if this pisses off the players, which I'm betting it will because they all loved Vintage, this team is going to take a huge step back if said players aren't willing to sign extensions.

Then trade them.

I don't want to sound callous, and I get why people are angry, but if players don't want to stay because Kyle Dubas isn't here then you have to trade them. Mats, even under all the shit he went through, all the GMs, all the coaches, presidents, management chose to not waive his NTC in the last year of his deal. Where are guys like that now?
What players have publicly commented on this?  None as I have heard. Players are human and even if they loved Dubas they are also mercenary in the way they move from team to team with no loyalty over a large paycheck. I don't think that many will publicly comment until they move onto their new teams after the sell off.
I guess Keefe is next, wonder why the axe has not cut of his expanding neck line as yet.
I have lost a ton of respect for Shananhan and a certain extent to Dubas as well.

Shanahan slept on for one night, perhaps he should have slept on it over the holiday weekend and taken some other counselling on the move. Its done and dusted as an old friend of mine used to say.

Non-Hockey Chatter / Re: Heat pump
May 19, 2023, 06:02:52 PM
Quote from: LittleHockeyFan on May 18, 2023, 01:40:05 PMour house is electrically heated. For many years, we used a woodstove to do most of the heating. After getting new windows put in by Centennial, our hydro bill went down substantially. We had a heat pump installed with our central air two summers ago and our hydro bill went down even more.
Our neighbours, who have the same model house as we do, had gas installed, furnace & ductwork.....cost them 15K to have that done, and they now have a gas bill monthly AND still pay almost the same amount we do for hydro per month too. Heat pump paid for itself first year we had it.

Heat pumps are the way to go even though the cut out at -10C for the heating. My backup heating system is like a mini toaster oven that eats electric. Still lucky as BC power is so much less than Ontario.
I now live on Indian land lease and my other utilities; water (unlimited), snowplow, garbage collection for $900 per year. Wow.

Toronto Blue Jays / Re: 2023 Blue Jays thread
May 19, 2023, 05:58:10 PM
Jansen has become Mr. Clutch lately, now we need the other guys to start swing the bat like him.  Overall I would say the Jays have been OK but not anywhere near their potential as yet.  We need an extended winning streak. And to beat the Yanks and Rays would be very helpful but to be swept by Boston was a big disappointment. Up and down too much.

Quote from: CarltonTheBear on May 19, 2023, 05:32:18 PMSo what are the odds of Dubas and Spezza taking their talents up the 401?
Montreal just got a new GM.

He means Ottawa
I knew that Herman, just pulling legs again. After reading about the players/staff/fans(yes 74% of Athletic readers wanted Dubas to continue), it seems like this is a massive Frig up, some it on Dubas yes, but more on Shanahan had some bad feelings in his gut on Thursday and spewed those out on Friday. For Spezza to leave like he did makes me a fan of his for life.  If the fans got together and turned in their season tickets then Dubas may be retained, but that won't happen.  I think he became a bit unwound at the end, his encounter with fans in the stands in Florida and his tossing water bottles.  I think he cared to much perhaps but I am not happy with this at all. I have been a Leaf fan for all my 67 years and seen it all; Ballard, JFJ, Burke, Nonis and the rest. The fact that names like Mark (I couldn't draft a flying pig)  Hunter is like a lot more of the same.

Hope Dubas will resurface and be given the reigns to really build a team. I will cheer him on.

Quote from: OldTimeHockey on May 19, 2023, 07:59:13 AMWhat are you trying to convince everyone of here? That sometimes the best team wins and sometimes they lose?

The argument being put forth is basically this:

The Maple Leafs have made the playoffs every year for the last 7 years. In some of those years they lost close series' to teams that were better than them or they were roughly as good as. In maybe two of those years they lost close series to teams they were better than. This cannot possibly be explained by the randomness of the playoffs along with some bad luck but rather by either a significant character deficiency on the part of a few select players on the team(which does not allow them to be like the players on more successful teams who never, ever have bad games in key moments) or some sort of curse brought on the team by an angry deity who feels the CN Tower reaches too far into the heavens and is a challenge to his omnipotence.

The answer, as prescribed, is to trade our good players for less good players. Step 2 is ??? and Step 3 is Stanley Cup Champions.

Step 2 could be "add more truculence"
And a good dose of Testosterone.
